In his last few seasons, Phil routinely spoke about it being a primary concern of his to limit Kobe's minutes so that he was ready for the playoffs... He may not always have been successful at that, but he tried.
I'm sure there were times Kobe told him to stuff it, but I imagine it wasn't as often as Kobe might like you to believe.

If Kobe had to step in and tell MDA what to do (ex. post up Pau, play Nash off-ball, etc) just to play +.500 ball, and MDA doesn't even have the balls to sit Kobe, than what use does he have? I understand games that are close and winnable to play Kobe loads of minutes, but games against the Clippers where we were down double digits? Just rest up and prepare for the next game. We still ended up losing and Kobe still logged in 46+ minutes. Phil would of never allowed Kobe to play this many minutes, bank on that.
