Jack Morris & Dirk Hayhurst Call Out Clay Buchholz

Post#1 » by chargerxthirty » Thu May 2, 2013 11:06 pm

Hey just an interesting tidbit...

Apparently while Clay Buchholz was dominating the Jays, Hayhurst believes he was doctoring the ball. Said he had a ton of stuff on his forearm and that there's no doubt he was doing it. Also eludes to the fact that he and some "video crew" friends have solid video of blatant proof.

Here's the link of Hayhurst and Blair discussing it.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/red-sox-starter-buchholz-could-be-doctoring-ball/

Kind of interesting I guess considering how well Clay has pitched this year. Thoughts?

On one side of the coin, Buchholz would have to be an absolute moron to have a foreign substance on his forearm...if you're going to do that, you generally want it somewhere that allows you to pick it up with a natural motion.

On the other, he's been getting some absolutely filthy movement this season, more than I've seen previous. That's a possible reason for suspicion, I guess, though the precision with which he's spotting all of his pitches would seem to argue against it.

Not too sure myself. I have sort have found Dirk Hayhurst trying to find his niche as a broadcaster by being the guy that's not afraid to call guys out on stuff... so there's that, but at the same time his conviction and the manner in which he delivered it was kind of convincing.

tough to say though

Not just Hayhurst - Morris, too

http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/_/i ... y-buchholz
Morris said he went to Farrell and told him of his suspicions. He said he saw Buchholz repeatedly going to his left forearm, which he said was clearly smeared with a substance that Buchholz was rubbing onto the ball.

"It was all over his forearm, all over the lower part of his T-shirt, it's all in his hair," Morris said. "I can't prove anything. I can't prove anything.

"Funny thing, the way the game is played today. In our generation, every player, every coach would have seen it, the umpire would have gone out and made him change, made him stop and that changes everything. Or else they throw him out of the game. So what kind of bugs all of us is nothing is done here."

That last comment could be construed as criticism of Toronto manager John Gibbons and the rest of the Blue Jays, none of whom raised any issues with plate umpire Bruce Dreckman.

I don't really care whether he cheated or not, but I absolutely love that our broadcasters are calling out the Red Sox for this stuff.

One things for sure, Bucholz will be watched more closely in his next start.

Good. Anything to create drama in a negative way for Boston.

Okay I just realized why this story didn't sound right at first. In my mind these guys work for the Jays, so this is the team calling a player on another team a cheater.

But we're supposed to believe these guys are just local media? Hayhurst and Morris? Shi Davidi? Sportsnet..ca?

Didn't think it was a big deal when I first heard the news, but after I saw the pics and video of it then it sure did look like he was up to something.

If Buchholz keeps dominating then it won't be negative drama for Boston. It'll be "those silly Canadians, go back to your hockey".

Chances of Buchholz continuing to dominate are unlikely, but it's a no-win essentially unless he gets Peralta'd.

Well... I am not leaning one way or the other but the video they showed of his arm.... holy crap... it was absolutely loaded with "something" that had to be more than "rosin"

Regardless... I'm not ready to say he did anything wrong yet... all I can tell you is that I wasn't expecting Clay Buchholz to be 6-0 in April with a 1.00 ERA.

The Jays had to deal with sign stealing, the Man in White, constant PED speculation with Bautista, etc.

I am not going to shed a tear for Boston going through stuff like that.

Seems to be getting some steam. Watching the Cubs and Reds game and the broadcasters are talking about.

They think it might be rason.

It's a shame that Buttholz is getting the benefit of the doubt while if it was the other way around a Jays player would have all the heat on him.

It means other media and teams will watch him during starts and potentially make it more difficult to do whatever he was doing before (if he was in fact doing anything at all). I'll enjoy the saga.

Most interesting thing, for me, is Buchholz's mention of going to his hair, just because it's something I hadn't considered before. Pour water over your head, as he does -- and several other pitchers do -- and you could have half a tub of vaseline in there and it wouldn't be apparent.
