Predict Joe Dumar's Summer

Post#1 » by Sort » Thu May 2, 2013 4:16 pm

While we have numerous threads of wishlists, none of us are Joe Dumars (assuming he's not a lurker). So, the one person calling the shots has a plan, he's following it, and I'd say in a week or two the first big call will be made.

Let's here the predictions for what Dumars will actually do:

1) Which coach will he hire?

2) Predict the order of players Joe Dumars will consider drafting (we don't know order, but we do know he'll have a master list of which player and then tell everyone his actual draft pick was his number one choice).

3) Predict how Dumars will spend his twenty million dollars in free agency or how he could use the cap space in a trade.

1. I predict he will hire Obradovic.

2. Oladipo/Muhammad/KCP

Oladipo will likely be the guy if he's on the board. High character, defense first guy. He's a lot like Joe D to be honest. Worse shooter, but more athletic.

3. I'll answer this later.

Disclaimer - This is not what I WANT to happen, this is what I expect Dumars to do.

1) Coach = McMillan

2) Draft = Oladipo (would be fine with this)

3) Free Agency = Calderon, Maxiell, and Bynum re-signed and we throw big money (near MAX) at Iggy.

3b - I don't expect Stuckey and CV back. Whether that means we amnesty CV and buyout Stuckey - or trade them away this offseason....I don't expect them back

Calderon / Bynum / Knight
Knight / Oladipo / English
Iggy / Middleton / Singler
Monroe / Maxiell / Jerebko

I could see Joe hoping to throw something like this together.

he's going to have to take whatever halfway decent coach that will take his sorry a** because hes used up any cache he has in that area. so if Mcmillan will come here he's probably the next coach.

Calderon/Stuckey/2nd rd pick
Mayo/BK/English
Shabazz/Singler/Middleton
Moose/Max/CV
Dre/Dalembert/VK

Mayo- 3/33
Caleron- 3/21
Max- 2/6
Daly- 2/8

1) Hire Obradovic

2) Win the lotto - draft McLemore

3) Sign CP3 & Josh Smith

CP3/Knight
McLemore/(Knight)
Smith/Singler/Middleton
Monroe/(Smith)
Drummond/(Monroe)

Done, that's all you have to do Joe.

$11 mil per year for OJ Mayo? I would be more comfortable at $8 Mil. Can we find a better back-up at PF than Max? I hope Stuck and CV will both be gone. OMG! It's going to be hell to really turn this roster into a contender.

im just saying what I think Joe's going to do. im not too high on giving Mayo that kind of money myself, but Dumars is a desperate guy these days and thats a dangerous thing.

I dont think Gores is willing to pay the money to amnesty CV or buy out Stuckey, but maybe im wrong.

Nate McMillian, Shabazz Muhammad, Andre Igudala (a 3-4 year Nic Batum ish deal), assorted bench dept. Preserve a good chunk of our cap space.

Pass by Phil Jackson on the way to the offices after having a couple days off. Notice Brian Shaw watching videos in the film room. Walk towards his office only to be stopped by Gores assistant saying that Tom wants to see him....

With the hiring of Phil Jackson as Gore's consultant, I cannot imagine how Joe D. is entirely comfortable.

Until and unless Jackson is ultimately hired to run another franchise, my prediction is Joe will be wondering if his days are numbered. Jackson isn't ready to take over any team pre-draft. He's not scouted anyone, and is on the outside looking in on any organzations scouting reports. He doesn't even intimately know the personnel on any team he'd take over, or how their cap room works, or which teams have been discussing what players.

If Jackson were to take over the Pistons it would be post-draft and post-free agency. If that's Gore's plan, then he'd have Jackson in his ear to veto or approve trades and acquisitions - maybe even draft picks, but that would be in the background.

Jackson taking over for Joe D is not something I am or am not predicting. I really don't know. I'm a big Joe fan, and if it were anyone else, I'd be wishing that he'd be the GM forever. But if Phil Jackson were available, given how big his name is in this sport - and how attractive that might make our franchise to top players, I can see the logic in going that direction.

BTW, the Pistons are a perfect situation for Jackson given his history. We have a young franchise center - possibly going to be a top 5 player in this league, paired with Monroe who is a perfect player for the triangle (as he develops his outside game). Jackson would get to be the hero and add to his legend, with those incredible pieces already in place. We're going to be a top team again based on who is already here, plus our cap space and some additional very nice young talent. Phil would get the credit for the "incredible turnaround" of this franchise that's going to take place anyways over the next few seasons. Nice gig if you can get it.

I think the best thing JD could do would be the following...

Jack (30)/Bynum (18)
Afflalo (28)/Allen (20)
Iggy (36) /Singler (12)
Moose (36)/ Bennett (12)
Dre (36) /Wallace (12)

This team would be made in the mold of 2004. Moose, CV, and Bynum are defensive liabilities but the rest of this team would shut down their opponents.

Trade
Stuck and trade Knight!!! I want to win now!!!

3) FA Signings: OJ Mayo (10 million/year for 4 years), Jose Calderon (7 million/year for 3 years), Jason Maxiell (3 million/year for 2 years)
(FA Signings that I want: Andre Igoudala - 8.5 million/year for 5 years, Jose Calderon 5 million/year for 3 years, Samuel Dalembert 2 million/year for 2 years)

1) Which coach will he hire?

Nate McMillan, though I'd prefer it if we took a chance on Obradovic, or at the very least Brian Shaw. I would hate to see another slow-paced overrated-defense-oriented coach leading the Pistons. We are a young, decently athletic team, we should play up-tempo basketball, IMO.

2) Predict the order of players Joe Dumars will consider drafting (we don't know order, but we do know he'll have a master list of which player and then tell everyone his actual draft pick was his number one choice).

I really don't follow college ball - but hopefully Joe is targeting an athletic SF. His draft pick really depends on the coach pick, and what the vision is for the Pistons going forward.

3) Predict how Dumars will spend his twenty million dollars in free agency or how he could use the cap space in a trade.

OJ Mayo (as much $$ as it takes, i'm thinking $13m / yr. for 4 years), Will Bynum ($3m / yr. for 3 years), Jason Maxiell ($4m / yr. for 3 years)

100% agree with this

Phil doesn't need to scout anyone - we have scouts. He'd simply look take all the info our scouts have come up with and pick the player he wanted

Phil also doesn't need to know every little detail about our current players - we have people on staff who know those details and could fill him in

Phil also doesn;t need to be a salary cap guru since every organisation has people who are and they can give him all the details

Phil also doesn't need to know which teams have been discussing which players because regardless of what other teams do you build a successful program by concentrating on the things you can control.

We don't know who might be available in trades. We don't know who might be available at #7. We don't even know exactly how much cap space we have after renouncing our own free agents!

We do know which free agents are available, who is restricted and obviously which coaches are available

One long look at the free agents available tells you we can build a quality team around Drummond and Monroe next season, regardless of trades, regardless of the who gets picked at #7.

And that's how we should approach this off-season:

Control the things you can control (coaching hire, free agent signings to build around Monroe and Drummond)

Anything that falls into your lap is just gravy (trades and whomever we get at #7)
