Re: OT- advice on backyard basketball court
You guys saying he should go play at a school are nuts, lol. If I had the moola hell ya. I'm not sure I would go for the full 7 grand way as I'm cheap. But having a hope with a decent playing surface would be great. I could finally work on my lousy shot often. Heck even in the winter, there could be some nice days where you could shoot for 20 minutes. One of the most disappointing things about Toronto I found is lack of good hoops. I got on my bike and rode all over east york and the pickins are slim. I found more in BC where I grew up and when I moved to Vancouver too. Plus some school hoops are under 10 feet which kinda bites. Not to mention the kids. 'm looking forward to see the results.

Definitely option #1, having that extra width at the corner 3s is much more valuable than the actual length of the court, you'll be playing half court anyway.

Build the court if you want, I would if I could, but you're not getting that money back- no way, no how. Ask a realtor.

As others have said, don't expect a return on investment here. But it was my dream as a kid to have a basketball court in my backyard so if you can afford it I'd say go for it! This setup looks better then paving your backyard would, and less painstaking work. Do they place the flooring over the grass? If so it could be easier to dissasemble when you want to sell your house, and could actually help retain its value versus paving over your backyard would.
And screw those that say you cant ball in the winter. I used to shoot around outside all the time, the ball would deflate faster and it would suck when it fell into a snowbank because your hands would freeze when you picked it up, but other then that I had no problems balling all year

Actually after watching that video last week, got me more motivated to get his done this summer and something like his court would be more than enough for us.

They put a gravel base, if not a concrete foundation, from what everyone has been recommending, you need a concrete base about 1 ft. If they won't do it, I'll get a contractor to level the ground and pour the concrete slab first. I just have no idea how much it would cost for all that.
This video shows how VersaCourts do their courts but mind you this is in the US and probably in a warmer state, so this method probably won't work in Ontario.

In my part of the world, multipurpose play areas for kids are all the rage with developers, so I wouldn't be so sure that potential buyers wouldn't want that flex court.
Sounds like a fun project; good luck with it!

This place is insufferable.

Yeah, this city is lacking in public outdoor hoops. I know a few that are always available, but I live in the annex and outside of making the 20 minute walk to bathurst and st clair (hillcrest community school) there's nowhere around for me to just go and shoot around.
Any schools there take their rims off on weekends and in the summer.

Yeah, I used to go to a school behind my apartment building and shoot around in the rain and in the dark. I was like Ray Allen knocking shots down in the dark!

Re: OT- advice on backyard basketball court
Small update: FlexCourt gave us a quote of $8020 for a 35 ftx30 ft court "assuming we already have a leveled surface with a complete foundation" and their $8020 quote did not include their travel, shipping and hoop foundation charges
So as of now, they are off my list, I have asked for a quote from 3-4 other places but no replies as of yet. Looks like our best bet is to get a contractor and level the ground first and lay a concrete foundation. Then we can just paint the lines our selves and buy a nice hoop. We could always lay the soft surface later on.
I'll update this thread if anything happen, thanks for all the help everyone.
