Drummond for Lillard??

Post#1 » by dVs33 » Sat May 4, 2013 5:31 am

Just out of curiosity would you trade Drummond for Lillard?

Personally i can see an argument for both, but i'd like to see what opinions are out there.

What do you think?

A Blazer fan suggested Lillard & Leonard for Drummond & Knight on the T&T board recently, and I held my tongue. Consensus was that both teams would stick with who they've got, but even holding my own homer-istic opinion out of things, NBA teams as a rule generally don't trade big for small. If the Pistons (or any team, for that matter) actually put a legit big man with Drummond's upside on the trading block, they'd get much more in return than Lillard. And that's not knocking on Lillard, he's a hell of a young player and reigning ROY, but that's just the way business is done in the NBA — size DOES matter.

Look around the league and count how many "sure thing" PGs there are... there is a lot of them!

Now look around the league and count how many players there are like Drummond... it won't take long :-)

In 5 years who is more dominant: the PG or the Big?

Since I don't have a crystal ball I'll gamble on the big man - you have to IMO

I don't see why we would do it TBH.
It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.

Heck no!

Big >> Small and Drummond IS going to be the most dominant C in the league. Defensive anchors like that are complete game changers and he has the athletic tools to be productive offensively in the same capacity as Dwight. Even if he never develops any sort of low-post game the dude is gonna score.

No way! Look at how many 'first-tier' PGs there are in the NBA - CP3, Tony Parker, Rose, Westbrook, D-Will, Rondo, Curry etc.

There is only one truly dominant C in the NBA in Dwight (Bynum is never healthy).

Is Lillard really a "sure thing" star? IMO Lillard is Damon Stoudamire 2.0, those of you who are old enough know what I mean.

There is no chance, Id pull the trigger. Neither does Portland though.

no way in hell. Bigs have a much bigger influence on a basketball game than guards do

This isn't about big for small for me. It's about how crazy it would be to trade THE one guy in the league who has a chance to be an elite franchise center. He has a chance to be Dwight Howard, but IMO he has a chance to be better than Dwight "I'm too labile and interested in being the class clown to ever take my game seriously enough to maximize my ability and help my team" Howard.

As every observer says about him, (most recently Shaq and Barkley the other night) Howard has never really learned to play offense in the low post. He wasted his extraordinary talents.

Everything I've seen and read about Drummond suggests to me that he's a guy with superior character and work ethic and coachability compared to Howard. We'd be idiots to trade him for anyone in the league (given the Heat and OKC aren't offering us LeBron or Durant for him).

I like Lillard, but like you guys have been saying, he's a very good point guard in a league full of very good, great and elite PG's. And I don't like him on D. If the draft were reheld, Portland would have chosen him before Lillard. They'll never admit that, but everyone with 20-20 hindsight can see that Dre is the real deal.

No. Drummond has loads and loads of potential. 8/8/2 his year on 60% shooting despite basically have little to now offensive game.

Right now he's just playing off of athletic ability and physical tools. In the words of Charles Barkley, "Let me tell ya something Ernie...when he learn howta play, its gon be scary"

Beyond that, a dominant bigman has more impact on the game than a dominant PG.

I'll go with the consensus here.

Its not just about how good Drummond is, its about how rare his skill set is. If we trade him we could spend the next 10 years trying to find a defensive anchor.

If they draft were done over I'd have to believe Drummond would go 2nd. Davis and Drummond are the only guys from the 2012 draft with franchise player ceiling.

No chance from Detroit. AD is too rare in terms of size, athleticism and natural ability to be traded for a potential all-star point guard. Star point guards are a dime a dozen.
