JS provides the season re-cap; looks ahead

I don't think you could look back and say it didn't work.

"You can never have enough bigs," Hammond said. "It would be nice to have a big body that could hold the post defensively.

"If we choose to bring back our own players, I think we're going to have very fair discussions to be able to do that," Hammond said.

"If that doesn't happen, then the (salary) room presents itself and we can go out and make some other decisions.

"It gives us an opportunity to play ball."

Player grades, where Monta Ellis have it all except an A. No grade for Tobias.

http://www.jsonline.com/sports/bucks/206132841.html?ipad=y

MONTA ELLIS

The only Bucks player to appear in (and start) all 82 games, Ellis took off after the trade deadline. He seemed to relish the additional ball-handling duties he received after the Bucks acquired shooting guard J.J. Redick at the deadline. Ellis was a low-percentage shooter, hitting just 41.6% overall and 28.7% from three-point range. But he could go on hot streaks - witness his 25-point outburst in the fourth quarter of a victory over Orlando on March 17. Ellis ranked 11th in the NBA in scoring (19.2 points), 21st in assists (6.0 average) and fourth in steals (2.1). His quick hands accounted for plenty of deflections leading to fast-break chances. He could get into the lane with a lightning first step and knew how to finish at the rim. He played through various hurts, never complaining about injuries, and showed plenty of toughness. The 27-year-old Ellis has an $11 million player option for next season (with a June 20 deadline) and it will be interesting to see if he decides to come back.

Grade: B

BRANDON JENNINGS

Jennings called it the craziest year of his pro career, and he wasn't kidding. After making a strong bid for an all-star berth in the first half of the season, he tailed off at the end and did not react well to the addition of J.J. Redick at the trade deadline. Jennings' first reaction to the trade was to worry about his minutes, and sure enough they were affected when Jim Boylan had other options. Jennings was angry and vocal in his displeasure after being benched early in the third quarter in Philadelphia on March 27. After playing a strong first game in the playoff series against Miami, Jennings hit just 9 of 37 shots in the final three games (24.3%). Jennings' impending free-agent status was on his mind during the year and he switched agents, leaving Bill Duffy for Jeff Schwartz. After Game 4 of the playoffs he said, "I didn't switch agents for no reason." When pressed he would not say that he wanted to return to Milwaukee for a fifth NBA season. He set a personal single-game high for assists with 19 against Toronto on March 2 and averaged 17.5 points and 6.5 assists while playing in 80 of 82 games. But he shot 39.9% from the field.

Grade: D+

And team grades. No author listed that I can see, but tons of depth and insight

At least the related poll seems to be trending the right way. But now that RealGM is done voting we shall see.

What does the Bucks' roster need?

A complete overhaul (86%)

Just some tweaking (14%)

That's a reasonable analysis. Obviously I think it could be more scathing - Gooden 'Incomplete'? How about 'Why is he taking a roster spot on this team???'

I feel Moute and Daniels should feel fortunate to get C- Grades.

Generally good analysis, as you said. Interesting that JS was not as ecstatic with a Playoff appearance as the FO may have hoped with their grades.

Giving Jennings a D+ is absurd. Also, derp:

Yeah, you're right. I guess that's the indication he's not here next year. Clearly he was more impactful than Moute, Daniels et al, despite everything that went down.

Had a dream last night we made a deal with Portland for Wes Mathews. Sent out Udoh.

I think those type of moves are forthcoming.

Before stopping by here, I said this at BrewHoop.

J-S has lots on Bucks: recap, Hammond interview
I’m not far apart from Gardner on the player grades he gives. But I’d say his team grades average about one letter grade too high.

http://www.jsonline.com/sports/bucks/pl ... 32841.html

If I worked at the Cousins Center, I’d think I’d like John Hammond. But the traits that make him survive under Kohl (and get a 3-year extension) make him look like an ineffectual nice guy. Too mild to matter. He is not a master of the language, not a savvy communicator. He said a few things.

“You can never have enough bigs,” Hammond said.
You think I made that one up, right? Nope. He said it. It was in reference to hoping to add a strong, tough big – which is a need. But those words about our team have the same grasp on reality as Monty Python.

“We want to hire the best coach and the best person for the job.”
Brilliant! Bet no one’s ever thought of it that way before.

And I think John Henson most every time he stepped on the floor, he produced and played very well.
If that’s even close to being true, why did Hammond let the coaches ignore Henson? Maybe playing very well isn’t what we’re looking for.

“You say, ‘Did it work?’ I think those guys had success together at different points. They were rolling pretty strong together at points of the season.

“I don’t think you could look back and say it didn’t work.”
Re the pairing of Jennings and Ellis. Clearly, for John the exception proves the rule. They do that a lot. Claim that a failure isn’t really a failure because there was a possibility that it could have gone better. As if losing the rent money to the slot machines wasn’t a bad choice because there was that little winning streak before things went sour.

I wish I could DVR the off-season. And use Fast Forward X4 to get it over with sooner. If they have great success, we’d get to the new season sooner. I’d be delighted and relaxed. And if Kohl/Hammond stumbles and falls, as I consider most likely, I could start to implement my Plan B. Reducing my following of the Milwaukee Bucks to 20% of current levels until they change their ways. In major fashion.
AFAIK, IDKM

We all know Kohl's the larger issue but Hammond is still very much an issue.

I'm really getting the feeling that this off-season may drive me to full on apathy mode.

there's just no point in getting upset about this team anymore. they clearly either don't know what they're doing or they don't care.

This is one of the reasons I can't stand Hammond. He is so terrible at communicating in these interviews. And if you can't sound in command of your facts and the situation at hand with Charles Gardner or Sparky, it tells me you are equally poor in communicating with Kohl, cronies and other GM's.

I think the guy has closed only two sales in his life. His wife and getting his extension with Kohl.

It's a much different situation from the one he encountered when he arrived in 2008 and the Bucks were still working with several big contracts, including the max deal awarded to Michael Redd in the summer of 2005.

But digging out of the Bucks' current predicament will not be easy. The team is stuck in the middle of the league ranks with some decent players but no all-stars and seemingly no upward mobility.

This one caught me. I always LOL and join in when PP so often jokes about the fools that thought Hammond was still digging out of Harris' mess as of last season or something.

I'm surprised there isn't more vitriol for John Salmons here. Not for a person/player, as he seems like a nice enough guy. If not for him creating FTD (I realize there were a few other bright spots on that team), that line probably reads "digging out of the current predicament will be like every other offseason for Hammond, because he has made almost zero good moves in his tenure and the team has gotten the 8 seed once." I think Chancey still would have survived it all and would still be here, but it would be even more pathetic.

Plus, that silly Salmons contract was the seed that grew the most pathetic tree of Hammond moves. S-Jax, Monta, etc. It even indirectly had Tobias attached as we took him with the traded-down pick.

The only thing better than this would be a GIF with Paschke's head rolling down from the top after the "you say, did it work?" question. Then Paschke's response reads "why yes, yes it did, John!"

Last scene is Paschke's glasses popping up over his head and a gigantic open mouthed smile, "STUNNING!"

I don't have the time or resources to make that right now, but it would be great.

I blame Larry Sanders for the season. If he wouldn't have broken out, the Bucks would have easily missed the playoffs.

Just think, Gooden would have been playing the center spot again because Dalembert was such a massive waste of a trade.

The other trade that was just laughable was the Redick trade. Yes, trading a 20 yr old prospect for an unrestricted free agent is dumb in and of itself, but it is also dumb because of the other guys they could have traded for who were just as productive.

Wilson Chandler wanted out of Denver. You could have probably got him for cheap. Jordan Crawford went to the Celtics for Collins and a injured guy. All of this would have cost less and produced similar or better results than trading Redick for Harris.

This goes back to what has been said earlier about Kohl and Hammond. If Kohl's mandate is to "win now" then you need a GM that can make the type of trades to pull that off. Hammond can't do that. And the fact that he "hints" that he would like to rebuild means that he feels he is better at drafting than trading.

I'm not sure how any of us can be anymore mad at this point. It's just a constant stream of depression and loss for words or me.
God is good.
