Wow.. defending having Blanco here because he wasn't expected to hit. Thole can catch Dickey just fine and he doesn't look like a dumbass at the plate every one game out of 5. We should also defend calling up Bush, Ortiz, Gonzalez, and other scrubs because they weren't expected to do anything other than sucking.

He doesn't even play one whole game in five because Dickey doesn't last beyond five or six innings, and then JPA pinch hits for Blanco because he's such an awful hitter.

When we had runners on the corners with 1 out and Gibbons let Blanco go to bat last night, I wanted to yank him through my TV screen. Can't be pissed with Blanco, it's not like he's trying to suck. But as a manager in a close game, why would you let an automatic out go to bat in that situation? Makes no sense. If Dickey was on fire and going for a complete game shutout I could understand, but if Dickey is pitching no better than an average #3 starter, he certainly doesn't need his own catcher. Blanco is letting pass balls go every other hitter. Can't see JPA being much worse.

You do realize that was in the 4th inning of the game, right?

And you can't just sub in catchers on a whim. I thought we were in trouble when JPA took the HBP in the 9th.

I agree that's early, but the fact we're even debating it underscores Blanco's lack of contribution. If Dickey goes on the DL for any reason, Blanco is basically finished here. He has no trade or other residual value, no reason to keep him around even now. He's kind of like a pilot fish nibbling off a shark.
