Will Casey change his offensive playbook for next season?

Post#1 » by Reignman » Fri May 10, 2013 2:30 pm

At the end-of-season presser Casey basically said that his offensive playbook was jacked from Dallas' Nowitzki-centric offensive packages. Basically, Casey walked into this season believing Bargs was his #1 guy and that he would be able to execute those plays.

Well, we all know what happened with that. Bargs failed and we get off to a rocky start on the road. We go 4-19 and Bargs eventually goes down with injury. Interestingly enough, we played some very good team-oriented ball right after that with this team sharing the ball and racking up assists.

Then the trade happens and we essentially switch two starters (Jose/Ed) for Gay and our entire starting lineup is revamped. KL gets back in as starter, Gay comes in as the #1, Amir gets promoted finally and JV comes back from injury. We saw an initial uptick with Gay's arrival but then our ISO ball catches up to us when Gay's efficiency plummets. Luckily, Gay starts putting up career norm numbers (better in fact), JV catches up to the speed of the game and we run plays for him and KL takes on more of a distributor role. We end the season with a nice little stretch where it seemed like Casey had made adjustments to the offense and allowed the team to start running more.

So with all the changes last season it's really hard to grasp what Casey has in store for his offense for next season. Clearly he'll drop the Bargs-centric plays and cater more to the new configuration of the starting lineup but the question is what will/should he do? I liked the fact that we were running more. I liked the fact that we were running more PnR's for Amir/JV. Two things I expect will be the bread/butter of this team next season.

Thoughts? Do you guys think the style of ball we played in the last 2 weeks is a sign for next season or should we expect something different completely?

First thing first. Will he still be Raptor's head coach next year?

As far as I see, yes, as will BC.

Now lets get back to the discussion. This BC/Casey firing situation is just more wishful thinking on the part of this board. MLSE doesn't give a rats ass about what we think.

Fire Casey, put his playbook in the shredder, engulf it with gasoline and then throw a match to it so that no other franchise may suffer from it again.

Ok, since people would rather dream about Casey/BC getting fired than talk about the team, let me rephrase the question.

What kind've offensive structure should we employ for this team next season to maximize the skillsets of the starting lineup? (whoever the coach may be)

I hope TRoss and Fields can improve enough over the summer to make AA go away or become our 12th man.

The same one that is being employed currently by the Golden State Warriors. In other words, get Mike Malone over here, pronto!

The issue is Casey. He has doesn't have the offensive mind and tried mimic a roster that was far superior to ours.

Either can him or get him an offensive assistant (Gentry) but Gentry looks like he's headed to LA with D'Antoni imo.

Anderson needs to go he makes me sick to my stomach watching him play. BUT Casey always has the option to glue his ass on the bench he just refuses too. If Casey keeps his job, Alan Chuckerson should be cut because Casey is the only coach dumb enough to play him.

This reminds me of Seinfeld when Kramer tells Jerry that he'll have a whole new career on his hands to which Jerry replies, "you mean A career"

Caseys offense: Pass the ball to rudy or demar, let them take contested jumpshots.

Playbook???

It was a single sheet of crumpled paper, that has a stick man labelled "AA" shooting the basketball.

 it's just to difficult to ignore the front office/coaching uncertainty right now to really be able to start thinking about the team etc. It does sound like Bargs will be gone (at all cost?!? hard to say even that right now)... too much is up in the air right now.

I do agree however that hopefully T-Ross comes on next season and relegates AA back to the deep bench

We looked pretty good near the end of the season when Casey loosened the reigns and let these guys run a bit more. I also saw alot more action out of the PnR with us actually using guys like Amir/JV.

It's not all doom and gloom, Casey made some adjustments that seemed to work. Hopefully with a summer to revisit what this team needs he can add some more wrinkles to his playbook.

I mean, an NBA offense isn't rocket science. You can do a finite amount of different things that practically every coach understands. The question is can they pick the right ones to fit the make up of their team and do they have the ability to teach/execute those plays.

I would take the latter part of the season with a grain of salt. How many times did Casey say that if we were in the hunt for the play-offs that he would essentially be returning to the way he ran the team prior to our mathematical elimination?

Edit: How many times were useless losses blamed on Jonas missing one or two defensive rotations but AA/Lucas chucking was a non-factor?

No, Casey wants to play a certain way and we dont have the players that want/should play the way Casey wants to play. You are going to see the same old stuff next year if Casey is back. This team is mismanaged and you can tell their is conflicts of interest in different spots. Basically this team is like a Cat and a Dog in a cage and a Monkey Trainer looking after them.

Seriously though, Dwane Casey does not have an offence. His idea of an offence is to have Rudy Gay and DeMar DeRozan consume 50% of the team's shot attempts per game, usually via isos. Kyle, Amir, and Jonas have to pretty much be open or opportunistic to get the remainder of the shots.

I think Jonas has to have plays ran for him. Point blank. He's our most efficient offensive player. Design some plays for him.
