My wish for the offseason.

Plan A: CP3/Dwight (i'd give it 10% chance of happening.)

Plan B: Ellis/Bynum (Or Pekovic through S&T)

I'd say Bynum's worth the risk. Same with Tyreke Evans..

I don't get it ....
There are reports that the Hawks are going after SVG in order to lure in Dwight?
I thought there was a lot of awkwardness in Orlando between Dwight and SVG. Why would hiring SVG make Dwight more likely to sign with the Hawks?

For me, it's like this...

Plan A: It's fairly obvious, right.

Chris Paul
Dwight Howard

Plan B: I think there are a plethora of targets we can see here, but it focuses on guys in their prime that have 3-4 years left at a high-level, as minimum. They need to fill our three big holes - big man who can rebound/play defnese and preferable isn't incompetent on offense, a #2 option and a guy and someone who can create offense.

Tyreke Evans
Nikola Pekovic
Andre Iguodala
Monta Ellis
Tiago Splitter

Ideally, we can get 2 of the above group. Then you have role players, who'd we target to fill the rest of the roster

Chauncey Billups
Jose Calderon
Tony Allen
Willie Green
Zaza Pachulia

Plan C: Trade for Veterans

Kevin Garnett
Paul Pierce
Danny Granger
Pau Gasol

Are there more on this list? probably.

Plan A: CP3 and No Bynum Please
Plan B: No Ellis Please
Plan C: I like KG and Granger on Mavs uniform.

The 3 exirings on that Plan C list are all better options than any multi-year deals to any name on the role player list. And they are also better than any 8 figure salaries for the names on the Plan B list. Don't hate me for not wanting to completely waste any hope of getting a difference maker in here before settling for the mediocrity on plan B and C. Good talent there, but not anything that would get us out of the 1st round.

I am so glad I did not see Jennings name on any of those lists.

It's going to be really difficult because we can't get both Paul and Howard unless they take a massive paycut, even if we dealt Marion for capspace and everyone else, we would have like 39m$ of space, and this guys maxes are higher than that.

I understand your frustration, but lets count the number of statements needing clarification here....

1) Paul and Howard are not going to take an even bigger paycut than they already are by leaving the team with Bird rights. If they both sighed with Atlanta, they would be giving up $25-30 mil. If they sign witha stripped down Dallas team that only has Dirk, they would be giving up another $15 mil over 4 years. I think it is safe to say they are not giving up $35-40 mil to sign with Dallas.

2) If the cap was set to $60 mil (raise by $2 mil from last year) and we traded Marion and waive Bernard James and Josh Akognon, our available cap would be $27.5 million (Dirk, Carter, Cunningham, Crowder, #13 and 6 min salary holds ate up the other $32.5).

3) That $39 mil number you mentioned is almost dead on to what they could get (not "much higher").
D12 - 20,513,178
CP3 – 18,960,809

4) The only way we get both is if there is a HUGE increase in the cap figure or we get one of them via sign and trade where our outgoing salaries include Marion, Carter, Cunningham, Bernard James (unguaranteed) and Akognon (unguaranteed).

We can trade everyone for capspace, trade the pick for a future 1st, and do the same with everybody else, trying to snatch 2nd round picks or staff like that, you only keep Nowitzki and Crowder.

$60,000,000
-$22,721,381 (Dirk)
- $788,872 (Crowder)
-$4,901,800 (10 roster holds) @ $490,180 each

I don't see that happening at all. We would have to have someone possess their bodies long enough to sign a contract in order to get them to give up that much money.

(per db.com)
Chris Paul
5yr, $107,343,500 LAC
4yr, $79,714,196 non-LAC

Dwight Howard
5yr, $118,000,000 LAL
4yr, $87,600,000 non-LAL

Using the $14,206,026 example above, they would be 4yr $62,144,607

Even if they both desperately wanted to leave LA, I just can't see Paul dropping $17.5 million and Howard dropping $25 million over 4 years because they think Dirk and Crowder especially since Horford's and Harden's team can pay them then 4 yer max..

That is a ton of money for a player to give up. I can not see anyone passing up that kind of money to relocate.

Realistically, i cant see Dwight and Paul coming here. When the dust settles, Dallas will most likely have Pekovic signed to Chandler/Haywood money to start at C.

He's probably going to war with VC-Marion-Dirk-Pekovic and whoever he can sign for one year deals. That should have him enough money for another shot at another free agent in the summer of 2014. And that will be the case for as long as it takes until a big free agent decides to sign with dallas.

But like Dirk said, "If none of those top free agents come, we gotta make some moves with sign and trades or something. We want to get back to the playoffs and be a factor. We owe it to these fans who come out every single night to support us."

So hopefully something happens.

I disagree. I don't think we will sign ANY restricted free agents. In order to have any hope at getting them, we have to out bid their current team (and most f the RFA are marginal t best...like Pek and Jennings). And we have to wait too long while everyone else gets signed.

We shouldn't overlook that it's all but certain that both players will get more contracts when this one expires. That means they will still get the 5th year in year 5, when they do the next deal. A more legit comparison is to look at 4 years against 4 years. When we do those numbers, is the difference still compelling?

Over 4 years
Paul ...Difference of 3.36M total over 4 yrs or $840,000 per season ...(LAL 83.07 DAL 79.71)
Howard ... Difference of 3.69M total over 4 yrs or $922,500 per season ...(LAL 91.28 DAL 87.59)

Once the difference in state income tax is included (CA tops out at an extra 13.3% added to federal rates), the net annual salary is probably slightly in favor of Dallas.

Well the 5th year is guaranteed with there current team whether or not they decline steeply or become limited due to injuries. Alot can happen to a player in 320+ games/4 years. The next contract is far from guaranteed to either player.
I really think the players and agents look at the total dollar amount of the contract rather than rolling the dice on health and hoping that they dont decline.
Chris Paul is 28, Howard is 27, This will be the most important contract of their career.

Dallas needs to make a plan A offer to Howard/Paul, but it is far more important to be making plans B, C, D , etc.

I really think Howard's problem is stratling the fence between wanting a team to be his and being a major piece on a superteam.
Dallas might be a problem because this has been Dirk's team just like the Lakers have been Kobe's. Yet Howard wasn't happy in Orlando because they couldn't get pieces to help him.

I really think Cuban will need to sell him on the fact this team will be his which imo will be a hard sell considering Dirk's great history as a Mav and the bond he has with fans.

I honestly think the best fit for Howard is a team where he is clearly the #1 guy but has 2 extremely strong B level players with a solid supporting class...someone like Denver or Indy.

I think it wouldn't be that difficult, Dallas has a top3-5 coach that knows how to use him properly, we have a huge great fit in Dirk taht could re-sign for cheap in 2014, 2014 is full of great FAs...

Dwight can stay, but the Lakers are a first round exit at best next year too with Kobe coming back, Gasol and Nash being terrible fits and D'antoni there...

Dallas maybe couldn't win it all next year, but check it out for 2014/15 with Nowitzki-Howard plus tons of capspace.

I think Memphis example is a good one for Dwight too.

I think Howard's ego is such that he will do more for a team than a coach will do for him.
I agree with your point once he signs but the problem is getting him to sign and I don't see where good coaching will be a deciding factor for him.

Dirk structured his contract 2010 so that he'd make less money in 2011 than he did in 2010...
That year we won a championship... I hope one of the two big fish free agents takes Dirk's gesture as a sign of goodwill.
I mean Chris Paul not Dwight....
