Finally had a chance to reproduce B-R's estimates using the method they outlined (linked on page 2). Here's the excel spreadsheet with calculations:

I put ElGee's (Complex Method), basketball-reference.com's, and Dean Oliver's estimates in a Google Docs spreadsheet:

Notes:

• the xxx Diff column is the difference from the mean
• the xxx_Z column is the z-score
• the xxx Diff' column is the difference from the mean, excluding the given sample value from the mean
• the xxx_Z' column is the z-score, excluding the given sample value from the mean and standard deviation

I think ElGee's is the best of the three (thanks again for your hard work), but wanted to post this link so all three can be available in the same form.

I think people often confuse IQ with skills. For example, people will automatically label Duncan as smart, but it seems to me that he's just very skilled. I mean, if you were to take away Duncan's jumpshot and post moves, would he be as smart as people think? Some might think his ability to keep the ball inbound on his blocks shows his IQ, but it could also just be the fact that he has a very long wingspan and very good lateral quickness, so he doesn't have to jump very high, which means it's easier for him to not lose control when he tries to block the shot.

IQ does exist, like for example, someone knowing when to leave his man to temporary rotate over to give the big some time to recover, or just simply not taking bad shots, but most of the time, it's just skills.

Note that I said BBIQ not IQ. I'm not making a judgment about McGee's academic intelligence.

While IQ is in theory something that doesn't change, BBIQ absolutely changes. Another way to put this is the often said phrase "The game slows down for veterans". Us normal people experience this too. When you first learn to drive it takes 110% of your attention just not to kill people but it gets easier. If you're ever managed a complicated project at first the role seems absolutely overwhelming, but in time you learn to get all your ducks in a row.

Veteran basketball players can keep the court in their head better, they can see the plays coming and they can see where the ball is going, they can see how adjust the defensive approach of themselves and their teammates to stop all the bad things from happen...

they also typically don't run back on defense when their team got the offensive board and is in the middle of trying to attack again.

It would be fair to point out that the Russellian anecdotes I'm talking about involve a veteran whereas McGee is still quite young and hence might improve a good deal, but for two things:

1) You seem to be denying Russell the veteran's edge.

2) Russell's BBIQ was insane from the start and McGee's BBIQ is still worse than some rookies.
