Enlighten us with your knowledge Hermes

Also, didn't you say you were going to teach some undergrad classes?

i was offered, but it wasn't going to work out with my schedule

I would have taken a semester to do a student exchange program to take your class even if it wasn't relevant to my major.

I'm not doing to read this. While I think psychologists help people, I think the educational field is a load of crap.

I'm strongly biased towards hard sciences

I skimmed his paper. It's more philosophy than anything. Also the paper only partially looks at one spectrum of the allegory.

I enjoy all subjects, but I am definitely biased towards the sciences.

i'm reading it now, and just got done with the part discussing the cave and i find it weird that you don't think the allegory is about escaping reality since that is basically what you put in the essay.

Their understanding of the real world and reality stems only from the illusions projected by the shadows onto the walls. Now Plato hypothesises that a prisoner escapes from the cave into the real world.

reality for the prisoners is the shadows (like you said) and the prisoner who breaks free 'escapes' from that reality (like you also said)

so how isn't it about escaping reality. :dontknow: its just not the reality that you experience

*note you spelled hypotheses wrong, just a heads up since its on the internet and everything

Keeping the topic at hand, The Republic is a good read.

you are taking it way too literally hermes and missing the point.

their reality is a false reality, as we know it. plato's cave is premised on the idea that we cannot determine what is real and what is illusion- hence the escape from his own reality leads him to confront a different reality- and that is the point of plato's cave.

its not about escaping reality but rather the subjectivity of reality

Just remembered the Charioteer allegory is a good example of addiction.

just a couple of points on the matrix movies:

first is the animatrix any good? what's it all about? does it relate to the trilogy?

second: i don't remember neo ever calling trinity 'trin' - when did that happen?

if you like the matrix then yeah i recommend the animatrix, deals with the backstory etc, also has some of the characters i think neo and trinity make an appearance

also i wouldn't be able to tell you when but i don't think i would have made that up

I really enjoyed the animatrix. The two part prologue to the events of the matrix was especially awesome. I liked it more than the the sequels.

haha, you wrote it again - i think its just about connecting the dots (bolded parts)

you think its a false reality because it is different from the one you experience, but to them it is a real reality because that is what they are experiencing

the one guy 'escaped' and would go on to change his views of what he thought 'true reality' was

and you're right, it is also about how you perceive reality, but the guy would have never changed his view of reality if he hadn't escaped his initial one
