I think that has something to do with it, but tbh, when Jay-Z and the Nets were changing everything about the team and trying to remake the image they went for black and white. So it can't be that uncool.

their jerseys have nothing to do with it imo... the raiders wear black and are known for their 'menacing' look.

they play textbook basketball which the average fan finds dull.

why do you think kobe has so many fans? he shoots fadeaways over double teams, makes them at a bad percentage but the shots he makes excites the average fan.

average fans want the sizzle, not the steak.

I feel they get the boring label due to their stars not being exciting players ala Kobe, Lebron, Wade, Durant, Melo, ect. Any one of those players can go off and do it with flash. Duncan, Parker and Ginobli can go off but the style they do it with is more a blue collar down and dirty style. Not high flying flash or hitting incredible shots over tough defense style. Can they and have they done it that way in the past, yes, but it isn't something you normally see.

The more you learn about the game, the more you appreciate the Spurs. I doubt casual fans or novices can really appreciate what they do.

I also think Stern's push for superstars being the center of attention is partly to blame. I'd love to hear a player on the Spurs mention his "brand" to Gregg Popovich. Pop would probably send the guy to the D-league.

Real Madrid wear plain white, black for some away games, and they're the biggest soccer club in the world.

Yet I find Barcelona and Arsenal to be more fun to watch. Besides, any football team is big when they sign big names to their squad.

Good teams will always get hated on for one reason or another. Personally, I don't think the Spurs are boring. If you missed game 1 of the GS Spurs series because you thought the Spurs were boring, that's your loss LOL.

i'd prefer boring AND winning while PLAYING in the playoffs as opposed to flashy, exciting, AND WATCHING the playoffs.

There are a few exciting teams that are home watching the playoffs

As the Mavs proved, you have to beat the Heat with ball movement and have your 4th and 5th options make big shots. The Spurs are the best team in the league at having their 5th and 5th threats make big shots.

Well Soccer is a different beast.

My point isn't just the jerseys, it's also the arena color scheme as well. Again I honestly believe that subconsciously that dull black and white floor combined with the jerseys is kind of calming. It lulls you mentally. As a team their playing style is just as fun as many other teams, but I think the color definitely has an effect. It may no be the number one thing, but it still is a factor.

What gets me is how the announcers still go nuts when Manu hits some crazy shot. He's been hitting crazy shots for a long time now, anymore I get surprised when he misses those circus layups.

This thread gives me a ticket to make some cynical post about being cooler than the average fan because I understand basketball as a deeper level. But I really think those charisma posts have some weight to it. The Spurs personalities just don't lend themselves to be liked by the general basketball fan.

Not a lot of people were saying they were boring back when there were some traditional basketball personalities on the team. Mario Elie. Avery Johnson. Jerome Kersey. David Robinson wasn't as loud, but the fans were familiar with him. The twin towers were everywhere. Kerr and Perdue were highly familiar as well. The team wasn't pretty, but they were a household name.

Then after some failed high-attention signings (Derek Anderson) and some low draft picks, things decided to change.

Bowen, Parker, Ginobili, and Jackson were brought in. You had people clamoring "play Smitty and Willis, they're good! WHO is this scrub?...wait why is he so good?". No one appreciates being beaten by guys you've never heard of, especially at the height of the league's individual superstardom. At this point Duncan already had the "most boring PLAYER in the league" label, but once he started WINNING with foreign (literally and figuratively) teammates, the team took the label as well.

They've also hid from the media. Can't be interested in what you don't know. And at the rare points you did get to hear them talk on TV in a big stage, unfamiliarity turned into contempt. The Spurs just didn't fit. Duncan, this huge two time MVP, talks like THAT? What a nerd. And not even a cool, good-looking nerd like Nash. Ginobili is a nerd with a weird accent. Parker is French. Barry is a nerd. Bowen, this menacing physical player, talks like a nerd.

Look at the team now and the personalities are still the same---not your typical NBA friendly team. Danny Green sounds like a huge nerd. Kawhi has cornrows, typical schoolyard geek. Matt Bonner is the biggest nerd on the planet. Diaw is a huge artistic hipster nerd. Gary Neal and Cory Joseph? Big time nerds if you listen to them do interviews. The average NBA fan just has no interest in getting to know these guys like they do the Lakers roster or Heat roster. The Clippers and Knicks also have those familiar, open personalities. Fans love wacky outfits, video game covers, commercials, and swagger just as much as they love alley-oops and 50 point games.

So yeah, other than style of play you have 1) lack of charisma 2) unfamiliarity 3) the opposite of what a basketball personality is perceived. Not the Spurs fault, they just do not seem fun to hang out with for the 15-29 demographic.

Sorry, I'd like to think one of the other 32 teams have a chance at a ring.

They have won 4 championships in the last 13 years and none in the last 5.

If I wanted to watch one team win every single year I'd be watching soccer and baseball. It just sucks to watch, they've had their time as a team. And it's the worst part of basketball.

In the last 29 years only 9 NBA teams have won a championship. In the same time 19 MLB teams have won the world series.

I am definitely not a Spurs fan, but I have always argues they are not boring. Saying Parker and Ginobili are boring is asinine. They both play with a tremendous amount of flair and Manu shows plenty of emotion. They were very lucky to get Duncan the season that the Admiral was out, but the fact that they have kept the ship rolling with the same superstar, without being a free agent destination or getting other high picks is amazing.
