PP's Pistons Fun/New Offseason Plan

Post#1 » by Piston Pete » Wed May 15, 2013 9:26 pm

1) We trade #7 and #56 to ATL for #17 and #18

2) We trade Knight and #18 to ORL for SF Tobias Harris. (ORL takes Noel earlier in lottery)

3) We buyout Stuckey and amnesty CV

4) At #17, we draft SF Dario Saric (too talented to pass up at #17)
5) At #38, we draft SG Allen Crabbe (hopefully he falls this far - Hardaway, Rice, Ledo are plan Bs)

5) We sign PG Monta Ellis as a FA (long-term)
6) We re-sign PG Will Bynum as a FA (short-to-mid term -- Allen's best friend)
7) We sign SG Tony Allen as a FA (mid-term -- Bynum's best friend who can mentor Crabbe and Middleton)
8) We sign PF Earl Clark as a FA (long-term)
9) We sign C Chris Kaman as a FA (short-to-mid term -- comres back home finally)

Ellis / Bynum
Allen / Crabbe / Middleton
Harris / Saric
Monroe / Clark / Jerebko
Drummond / Kaman / Kravtsov

Sorry PP, but this plan is terrible

1) I have no interest in trading back
2) Orlando is not going to trade Harris, especially for an underwhelming guy like Knight
3) I like this part!
4) Saric isnt going to stay in the draft if he doesnt go in the lottery
5) Crabbe is a mid to late first, no chance he's available at 38
5) Monta Ellis is a worst case scenario, he's fools gold. He is a inefficient ball stopping chucker and not a PG
6) Not keen on re-signing Will Bynum
7) I cant see Allen leaving Memphis, but Id like to get him if he did
8) Im fine with Clark for cheap
9)) I cant see Allen leaving Memphis, but Id like to get him if he did

All and all, I see a team that is a longterm 6-8 seed.

1) I really like the idea of trading back IF Oladipo and Shabazz are off the board by #7
2) If ORL ends up taking Noel, they will still have a need for a young PG. They have a surplus of SFs (Harkless and Harris) and Knight/18 might just peak their interest.
3) Duh!
4) I think Saric's main objective is to remain in the 1st round per his DX interview - being a lottery pick is not a must.
5) I had plan Bs guys listed
6) I think a lot of people sleep on Monta as a PG. He's good defensively and can distribute.
7) I don't like Bynum much either, but re-signing him could be huge in recruiting Allen here
8) Re Allen coming here, see my Bynum comment above
9) I think Clark and Kaman are very obtainable this offseason.

The most possible happening with this proposal:

1) Resigning Bynum
2) Signing Kaman

I'm open to (if somewhat ambivalent) to a variety of offseason plans including guys like Iggy and Smoove.

I cannot, under any circumstances, support any offseason plan that has Monta Ellis as its centerpiece, though. I just don't like the guy.

1) is a great deal for ATL, 2) would be nice I guess but neither team would do it at this point.

A big NO to Ellis.

Ellis is fully capable of being a full-time PG in the league. He's just never been asked to be one. Look at his averages last season post All-Star break:

20.6 points, 7.0 assists, 4.0 rebounds, 2.4 steals, 44% FG, 35% 3-ball, 3.3 TOs

And quite frankly, if we're not going to work with Knight as our PG of the future, we'd be better off trading him.

He also plays 38 minutes per game and uses a ton of possessions to get those numbers. Basic advanced stats don't lie: PER of 16, ts of 49%, efg of 45%, ortg of 100. Those numbers scream mediocre high usage guy...not $12m per year.

Also, with all due respect Pete, do you know anything about Ellis? He was a full time point for a couple of years in GS-- the experiment didn't work well--and he's a notoriously bad defender. These are about the first things that spring to my mind about Ellis. Thought they were common knowledge for NBA fans.

We might be bad enough to land Wiggins with that lineup.

I dont know Pete...Dumars played well as a small SG and he was the same size as Knight...If Knight gained 10lbs of muscles I think he would fit well against these new generation 2-guard's...

Dumars played in a time frame where he was one of the bigger SGs in the league.

Knight plays in a time frame where he will be just about the smallest

If we deal Knight now, we won't get much of a return. I'm not opposed to it but NBA playoff contenders would view him as a sixth man. IE a Jason Terry type. No one is trading for him to be their PG no or of the future. I like the idea of adding Ellis as a PG though. Would cost 60 mill for 5 years though.
