Cap hit of a suspended player

Post#1 » by PhilDMonkey » Thu May 16, 2013 2:29 am

I found this from search:

For certain purposes, 50% of salary not paid to players who were suspended by the league is excluded. For example, if a player with a $10 million salary is suspended by the league for exactly half the season, then he loses $5 million, and 50% of this amount, or $2.5 million, is excluded from certain calculations including escrow and luxury tax. The team does not receive extra cap room which it can use to sign another player.

What if the player if suspended by the TEAM, or BOTH the team and the league, is that make any difference?

A player can be suspended by the league or by his team for breaking league or team rules, respectively. Team rules must be in writing, reasonable, and not in violation of the CBA or the standard player contract. The player’s salary is reduced by 1/110 of his base compensation for each game missed.

When the player is suspended by his team, there is no impact to the team’s salary cap or tax position.

When the player is suspended by the league, his salary is reduced by 50% of the suspension-related compensation amount for purposes of calculating the team’s tax obligation. There is no impact to the team’s salary cap position.
