I'm no fan of Reggie Miller (though he's not horrid, just the regular sort of bad) but the greatness that is Kevin Harlan trumps all.

The younger generation does not appreciate Hubie Brown because he doesn't suck up to the stars like the rest do.

It's because he does the best job selling the NBA and their agenda. He pumps of the superstars and in his eyes the NBA referees can do no wrong.

JVG is definitely tops. I don't get all the hate for Breen, he's not amazing but he does fine by me.

yea, the reason is hes under contract with ESPN and Marv is under contract with TNT. Thats the reason.
When they were both commentating NBC games, Marv was usually calling the A games.

Webber and JVG are the only 2 colour guys that are elite. Kerr is in the next tier by himself.

I can tune out the PBP dude and listen to Webber or JVG just fine.

I like pretty much most of these guys except for Breen and Hubie. Hubie at times degenerates into "teach the preschoolers at home about basketball" lectures, and he points out things that are either obvious or completely off about a player, especially if he talks about a player who plays for your team and tells you something like "This kid's a competitor, a real banger" and you'd go "O RLY? NEWS TO ME".

Breen is just annoying. "Puts it in" and "Bang" are horrible, horrible, catch phrases.

I have never heard Mark Jones and Jon Barry. I can't imagine Jon Barry being anything close to good.

I love Hubie and Tirico is good too but gotta give it to Marv Albert and Steve Kerr. Marv, Steve and I go back since the NBA Live days. The chemistry they have is unbeatable, and Marv Albert has a terrific sense of humour. But I looooooooove Hubie Brown.

And I enjoy Breen and JVG but they just don't create as much of an intense atmosphere with their commentating if that makes any sense.

Don't care. I have eyes, I can watch the game myself, and look at the boxscore on my own. I just wanna hear his voice <3

I enjoy it, because it's an unbiased way of showing his side as a fan. Rather than just talking about the game like a robot, he shows that he's invested in the game, and it's not an annoying bias because it's just a simple word of encouragement, unlike if Tommy Heinson was commentating he'd be having a heart attack over calls against the Celtics.

I spend a ton of time talking with friends about this so I'm gonna give an extended post. I'll discus them all in order of who I like best.

Tier 1
JVG - What a fantastic and interesting mind. Funny as hell...as real as it gets...unique, smart and thoroughly entertaining. My favorite color guy ever in any sport.

Marv Albert - The driest sense of humor on earth with a polished style that is predictable but still slick, unique and extremely professional. There will never be another Marv.

Mike Tirico - So exciting - Very good at his job - Very smart and he has a style and a voice that makes him seem like he was born for this job. He is a little safe and corporate like though.

Tier 2
Kevin Harlan - I think it would be hard to really dislike him. I mean that on a personal level. Extremely non-confrontational. Great voice but not the best basketball mind and not so bright. Works well with others.

Chris Webber - I met C-Webb in Vegas once and he was the most likable celebrity I've ever met. Classy and engaging! Listening to him is like listening to my brother on the other side of the couch. Also not brilliant though (I hate the way he says exspecially)

Jon Barry - reminds me a little of Van Gundy. Wicked smart (like the rest of his family) perceptive and not afraid to speak his mind. I don't like the way he pairs with Mark Jones though. Edgy.

Mike Breen - I know I would not like him personally but he is tremendously good at play by play and has a likable broadcast voice. He is smart too but in a very conservative corporate douchey way. I am sure he must be a republican. It's amazing how well he works with a total opposite personality type in JVG.

Steve Kerr - He's gotten better. I didn't used to like him but he's become more humble since he got fired as a GM. Also smart and a little Breenish.

Matt Devlin - A likable guy that I don't like as much when he does national games. Better a the Raptors guy. Pretty smart and probably a fun guy to hang with. Good voice.

Tier 3
Reggie Miller - I don't really like him and I bet he's a dick in person but he is pretty smart and knowledgeable. His voice is hard to tolerate and he seems arrogant.

Mike Fratello - Marv's whipping boy. Not terribly good at what he does. Lacks confidence but likable in a certain way that is hard for me to figure out. Fairly knowledgeable and too conservative.

Mark Jones - I used to hate him so much as a host at TSN in the early 90's. I was stunned when he got the US job because he was terrible by Canadian standards (which used to be low then). He was just as bad as a sideline guy but to my huge surprise he does a pretty good job at play by play. No personality though. Not as dumb as I thought he was but not too brilliant either.

Hubie Brown - I have turned off games because I couldn't tolerate him any longer. Now your gonna say why's that...I usually like NYC guys but he has this way of being condescending in his responses to his partners even when he doesn't disagree with them. I really aggravates me. It's almost like it's his style to be dismissive. There is also a lack of awareness about things that bugs me. It drove me crazy the way he used to add an extra syllable to the word athletic but miracle of miracles he stopped doing it half way through this year. I was shocked. He is tooo old school and not innovative at all in his thought but he has obviously been obsessed with hoops his whole life and sometimes has good incite. For a while he used to use the term "solid" 10 to 20 times a game but again he stopped cold one day. At least he can adjust...someone must have said something.

Dick Stockton - I have been a Dick Stockton hater for 3 decades+ now. Yes he has a voice that is made for broadcast but that is it!!! He is not a smart man...he is not an interesting man but the thing that makes me want to strangle him is how many obvious mistakes he makes. More than all the others here combined. Not just in basketball but in everything he broadcasts. I groan during his broadcast endlessly. I find myself shaking my head at yet another **** up time and time again. Please retire!
