Re: Official 2013 Draft Thread - Part IV
Oladipo is basically the same size as Beal.
Porter looks like he basically has the size of the average PF. I think a top 3 pick would be the only way to get him. Muhammed looks about average SF size which probably helps his draft stock a little.

Says what some of us have said. T Prince is who he says he is like.

Impressive young man. But he needs to go where he can start. That isn't DC.
They should be top 3 picks.

Ya. To put some perspective on this, Mcgee measured in at 6'11/240 without shoes with a 9'6.5 standing reach. Gobert is: 7'.5/235 without shoes and a 9'7 standing reach. Also recorded a 32inch vert (same as mcgee).

Fischella wrote:Bosh poor defense is a myth.
He's one of the best in the business on what he does on the defensive end, obviously he isnt a shot blocker, but that's not all on defense.
Also, Bosh talent on offense is tremendous, he'll probably can be making 25ppg being the 1st option elsewhere, Olynyk is nowhere near that, and he never would.
Yeah, I think there's a bit of confusion in this thread as to what a good defensive center is - and it's probably safe to say that Olynyk will never come remotely close to being the player Bosh is.

Re: Official 2013 Draft Thread - Part IV
I see an oddity - Dennis Schroeder, the little PG - has longer hands than most of the centers. From what little I've seen of him, he's got some special qualities. If he can convince GM's he can shoot, watch him shoot up to the lottery.
One of my favorites, Ryan Kelly. had to be helped - measuring nearly 7' with lifts in his shoes, but I don't think you can fake a 7'2 standing reach. His body fat % was way high. If he can get with a really good strength and conditioning plan, I think he's a legit sleeper and a great 2nd round pick.
Has Noel been eating? Rehabbing a knee doesn't mean you can't eat, Nerlens.

Re: Official 2013 Draft Thread - Part IV
I'm beginning to warm up to the idea of Olynyk...IF he can be used as a 4. He's got pretty good standing reach for a 4, I doubt he measures out to be much of an athlete. I tend to believe there is 2 ways to overcome lack of standing reach, Superior shooting touch (if you're skilled from the perimeter you don't have to venture into the land of giants) and explosive standing vertical (Griffin is able to get his shot off in the low post by elevating more than most IMO).
Outside of Shabazz, some of the lotto talents aren't weighing in where they ought to be IMO. Porter is 10 lbs lighter than he ought to be, as is Zeller. Dieng too, he's a bit older he should be more well built at this point I think.
If Gobert could add 30-40 lbs to his frame, he might be the most physically imposing specimen in the NBA

Dieng really never looked 245 pounds in the video I saw - him being 229 would explain that. Conversely, I always thought Adams looked a lot burlier than 235. 254 with 6.7% body fat if I'm reading that correctly. Rather tantalizing when you throw in his mobility.
Porter is 197!?! He's gone early and it doesn't affect his impact long term, but that suggests he'll need at least a year or two to adjust. The Cavs get him either outright at their slot or by using their bevy of picks to trade up a little.
Victor Office Depot has a 6" 9" Wingspan. I was a bit worried when I saw he was 6'4", but we can forget that. Don't think there's much need to discuss him as he's going early. Huge talent with plenty of teams early needing a 2-guard dearly.
Zeller only goes from prominence on my board on up. Nothing wrong with his measurables as a 4 and he can add plenty of weight with time. I'll be pretty stoked if our posse bags us Coyote Zeller. With good feet, decent length, a solid motor and smarts, there's no reason to believe he can't be a two way player.
Gobert is indeed a freak and likely lottery lock. You can't hate on that pick if he can read and react at that size.

How in the world does CJ McCollum weigh the same as Otto Porter, and 7 pounds more than Jamaal Franklin?
Colton Iverson went from 6'10" to 7". He also weighs 263. That might enable him to sneak into the end of round one. He is on a few GMs radar.

Shabbazz and McCollum both seem extremely lucid from the interviews I've seen so far.

Porter and Dieng may need to put on weight, but I think their reach measurements will help a lot more than concerns about low weight will hurt.
I think C.J. McCollum may slip. His reach is average for a PG.
With such a poor reach, I think Larkin will likely be a second rounder. Not sure I would like him with the Wizards second even if he was a good "value" pick. That combined with his lackluster Freshman year seems enough reason to pass for me. I would rather use the later 2nd on someone like Seth Curry.

Re: Official 2013 Draft Thread - Part IV
I can't believe I'm about to say this, but Rudy Gobert seems like a plausible target at #8 right now. Crazy length. Still young. Blocked a ton of shots and made a ton of steals in the Euroleagues. Looks good against NBA-caliber competition in the combines. He's got a ridiculous 2P% and even shoots 70% from the FT line. He fits a long term need. Why not?
He obviously won't play much at first due to his lack of strength, but he can play behind Okafor in his first year. Hopefully, the following year, he'll be big enough to hold his own against most bigs, and Nene can always step in and guard the burlier low post guys.
I still like McCollum a lot. He's got plenty of bulk to him and should hold up well under the NBA grind. His standing reach is somewhat lackluster, but his wingspan is solid. At guard, I think wingspan is more important because guards need to challenge the dribble and reach into the passing lanes more so than they have to block shots.
Steven Adams is a freak. 7-4 wingspan. 257 pounds with no body fat. I'd consider him at #8 except that I worry about his hands. He seems to fumble a lot of balls in games.
I have no interest in Olynyk at all. He's going to be a defensive liability and you can't have that with your starting big man. You just can't.

Gobert probably has to add about 20 pounds, the question is do we have the patience for that? Do we have the patience to wait on yet another big and cross your fingers that he develops. The combine and personal workouts scare the **** out of me if only because it seems to take a higher priority than game tape.

At least now we know it's not hand size though. It may be a coordination issue that's fixable.

Adams' standing reach is in the average range for drafted centers in DX's database. He's at 9-1 and change -- average is about 9-2. Average wingspan for drafted centers in the DX database is 7-3 and change. Gobert's measurement is crazy.
Zeller's reach is standard-issue PF, but on the low side for a C.

I agree that one shouldn't let the combine workouts outweigh actual in-game effectiveness, but with Gobert, it isn't so black and white. We really don't know how effective he would be in games against his American peers who play in the NCAA's. At least the combine offers us an apple-to-apples comparison.
But your caution about combine workouts is definitely warranted. It's why I'm not yet ready to bump Adams up into the top 10 even though the measurements suggest he is physically much better suited for the NBA then guys like Zeller, Olynyk and Dieng.

Setting aside EG's record, the 8th pick in a weak draft isn't a bad spot to take a chance on a project big man.
Strange that Len's height/reach wasn't measured.

Probably because he was in a cast or boot or something.
