Re: The 2013 NBA Free Agency Thread
Looking at career and single season comparisons between Webster, Danny Green, and Brandon Rush, coupled with Webster's injury history and stated desire to return, it's really hard for me imagine Webster getting a markedly higher deal than either Green or Rush did last summer.
Green got 3/$11.3M fully guaranteed.
Rush got 2/$8M, with the second year as a player option.
I expect Webster to fall somewhere in that range or close. If it's 3 years, it;s at $4m per season or less. If he wants a higher starting salalry, he'll only get 2 guaranteed years.
I don't see the market giving him 3 years of full MLE money -- not with his injury history and other options for wing shooters.

Other than Webster, who was the last player we picked up off the street who turned into a highly productive and highly efficient player who is a good locker room presence and seems to want to be here?

I nominate Deshawn Stevenson, least if I can get a "one out of four ain't half bad." The "one" was variable on a game to game basis.

We are going to have a decent amount of cap space next year anyhow. If we refrain from taking the 4th year option on Vesely and Singleton, we will have $18M in cap room even if we assume Webster is resigned to a full MLE salary (which I agree with fishercob is probably a bit higher than what he will actually cost). I'd rather have $18M plus Webster than $23M and more holes to fill in what appears to be a pretty mediocre free agency crop.
And just because we found him off the street this year, doesn't mean we always find someone off the street. Most guys off the street pan out to be roughly as good as Garrett Temple - a decent stopgap but someone you are always looking to replace.

Which "one"? Doing "can't feel my face" doesn't count as highly productive.

What about Roddy B as a "shoot for the homer" combo guard in FA?

I thought about him too. Would prefer to just draft CJM - better shooter.
I wonder if Ernie resigns Barbosa?

If he is available for the BAE or a small enough piece of the MLE to retain Webster(or a suitable replacement), I think it would be a great move. He might be looking for a 1 year showcase deal, but I would insist on a 2 year deal.
The BAE seems ridiculously low, but he did get beat out for playing time by a 37 year old Mike James.

Should we try to go after JJ Redick this summer?

Why? To pay $5M a year to come off the bench behind Beal?
We're not going after anybody but Webster until you can make a case that the free agent can help us more in the near and long term than Webster can.

I doubt there's any interest in Greg Oden, but I'd be inclined to kick the old tires on that guy, albeit, I wouldn't kick too hard for fear he might break!

Re: The 2013 NBA Free Agency Thread
Greg Oden is one of those guys like Phil Jackson . . . you have to be interested if you are a serious basketball team (which I'm not sure the Wiz are). I'd certainly rather put the money we are using on Vesely and Singleton into a higher risk/higher reward option like Oden and cut those one of both of those two loose. Then he is only competing with Seraphin and whoever we get as a 5th big with a second round DC or an Earl Barron type and there should be minutes behind our veteran bigs with a possibility of starting next year with Okafor's contract runs out if he shows a lot. With the defense we showed last year, the young guns at guard, and the big situation, it should be sellable to Oden's camp if our medical staff thinks he is ready.

It would make a lot of sense from Oden's perspective if Okafor wasn't on the roster and instead we had a starting-caliber PF (other than Nene). That way Oden could get starter's minutes but we'd still have the luxury of giving him periodic breaks because Nene and Seraphin could handle all the center minutes if necessary.
Overall, I'm not particularly interested. It's possible that he could come back. It's possible, but less likely that when he comes back, he'll actually be better than Okafor. But if so, I think the likelihood is that he won't last an entire season, and if he does, he probably will be too banged up to be much good in the playoffs.

(That link has comments on what Deshaun Thomas said about Greg Oden looking great in workouts.)
I think he's probably not able to pass a physical or we'd know his knees are sound. Once there is some official statement on his physical health, or news of him outplaying other NBA big men in workouts; that's when GMs will swarm like locusts to sign Oden to a guaranteed, multi-year contract.
I think he will play again but until I hear otherwise Greg Oden is like Yao Ming, Brandon Roy, and big Gheorghe Muresan of about 15 years ago. He can't play due to injury despite being at his prime age.
Tre Johnson is the future of the Wizards.

Re: The 2013 NBA Free Agency Thread
Rip Hamilton thinks he can play until he is forty. His skills have declined but he looked very decent against Miami in playoff minutes.
I wonder if his ego would allow him to settle into a very limited role behind Beal? Would Rip sign a 1-year deal?

Too injury prone at this point. I'd consider going back to LAC about Butler...Butler shot the ball well at the end of the season and would give us a bench player who knows how to put the ball in the basket. Ariza is a better player but I don't thnk he's in our long-term plans....that being said, they'd have to give us the first rd pick to make the deal happen. I'd the. The second first gives us another asset to potentially use in a trade up in the draft or a trade for a player......
