THE CELTICS SHOULD BE MAKING EVERY EFFORT FOR GRED ODEN!!

Post#1 » by MLander23 » Sat May 18, 2013 1:50 pm

i am a huge celtics fan and like to think i know basketball and watching the celtics this year as you all know we were lacking a center and why not take a low risk high reward on Greg Oden i feel like they should be making every effort to try and get him in green this team needs a center so KG can finally go back to power foward for good i realize Oden hasnt done anything in the nba yet and hasnt proven himself besides being injury prone but i still think we definitely need to take this risk and sign him he could be a huge signing for us for low money if he has finally gotten his body together

IMO Greg Oden is not low risk/high reward. He'll always be High Risk/High Reward.

For one, he's always going to be a high risk because of his injury problems.

Secondly, I don't think he'll be low money. There is going to be some stupid GM out there that rolls the dice on Oden for 3-5 million. That won't be the Celtics.

If Oden would sign for Vet Minimum then sure go ahead. I just believe some team is going to over pay for the potential "High Reward".

for 3-5 million that is a low risk think about all the people we have given that type of contract 2 and they have all been busts for us so it just makes sense haha i agree 1-2 million would be better but as you said someone will give him 3-5 million more than likely but he is still young and still has a long career as long as he stays healthy so why not he would be the perfect fit for us he rebounds like crazy and is a good defender he is a presence down low that we need with him and KG people would think twice before driving to the lane

He won't be taking the minimum; to use an exception on him would definitely be high risk.

The fear I have is he signs with Miami. If the guy even reaches 60-70% of his potential, then that team probably wins 5-6 championships if everyone remains healthy.

It's not like Boston doesn't wanna sign Oden. Who wouldn't for cheap?

He wants Cle. If not Mia. He made it pretty clear.

I wouldn't throw 5mil at him NO WAY lol. He's gonna be around that. Makes sense for CLE cause they have the cap.

Irving, Waiters, Porter, Thompson, Oden is very scary & young though.

I'm not a doctor and I don't have his recent medical reports so I don't know for sure... Nevertheless, I believe Oden has a *chance* to still be as good as Noah/Hortford so he would be worth the gamble at let's say a two year contract at $5-6 million a year with the second year only guaranteed if a preexisting medical condition doesn't pop back up. Unfortunately, I think some other team will be willing to pay more -- perhaps guarantee a second year -- if Oden looks reasonably recovered from his injuries.

Oden was a monster for a freshman in college and he did very well in Portland for someone that got too big limiting his quickness and was distracted by alcholism.

Granted it was limited minutes but his last season at Portland he had a PER of 23.1 and a TS% of .647. He did foul too much and turn the ball over too much for the amount he scored but overall he was having a very big impact in the limited minutes he played. Throughout his nba career and despite all the injuries and drinking too much, Portland's combined defensive and offensive ratings were 7.3 points better with Oden on the court.

IMHO a healthy and in shape Greg Oden -- which unfortunately will never happen -- >= Durant but it stands to reason that a somewhat washed up one due to injuries could still be a top 30 NBA player for a few years before further injury probably hits.

I suspect tons of NBA teams would want him on a one year contract if he looks healthy but most teams will be reluctant to offer more years then that.

I suspect Oden wants $$$$ since this could be his last contract but with the money being equal, Cleveland and Miami would be his top choices. So Boston is a long shot but realistically he would be a very good fit in Boston next year if KG/PP come back. Cleveland isn't good enough to win... Miami obviously is but do they really want to change their approach to the game that much to feature Oden? OKC doesn't have much money to spend but he would be a great fit there as well.

If KG and PP come back, I would easily throw 5 million at Oden if it truly looked like he could get back to 85% of what he once could have been. Then just play him limited minutes in every other game until the playoffs. Even out of shape early in his nba career, Oden was a major difference maker. Once the playoffs start, if Oden has held up then you gamble on playing him more.

Not only would it be good for the celtics to have him on the roster but he would bring fans to the stands and increase revenue people would come to see him play so i think he is worth the 5 million or so i mean just think about the lineup Rondo Pierce Green KG Oden but i dont think Pierce will be back this year unless he gets bought out and restructers his contract hes not the same player anymore and he is only worth 5 million or so and i believe he should be coming off the bench just my opinion of coarse but i really do feel like his age has caught up to him and its time for him to take a new role on this team so if he did come back id rather have Rondo Bradley Green KG Oden and pierce being the sixth man coming off the bench hell id love to have J r smith if we could manage to pick him up for free agency because we do need a scorer and i do believe JR should start for a team so imagine Rondo Smith Green KG Oden and Pierce coming off the bench with bradley that would be deadly!!

ok let me preface this with I know shyte for all about odens health, but 5 mil is not terrable for anyone who is 7 feet tall. as long as its not for 6 years, we can always find someone else who will want to give hm yet another chance if it doesnt work out, Go big or go home.

Cleveland is the best fit for him -- near home, they can pay him, and there's no IMMEDIATE pressure to perform.

Phoenix would be good just because of the medical staff.

Is Mike Conley Sr. still his agent?

He should go to Phoenix, but let's be clear any1 who gives him more than min is absolutely bananas. Oden might not play, might play a few guys, injure his knee and be done with b-ball and the risk is so very high, he's definitely not worth more than vet min....
Good assessment:

What are the chances that Oden turns into superstar? What are the chances that he turns into an all-star? I have to think both are higher than they would be for a typical late-lottery pick.

It's a high-upside, high-downside gamble, but he's worth MLE money on as long a deal as the CBA allows.

CLE, MIA or the highest bidder - we don't match those criteria, I'm afraid.

BUT I do wish, when naming my son, I'd considered 'Gred'.

I still don't understand how people don't want to play for Phoenix when they're made of glass.

Celtics have no shot of getting him. Oden is going to end up in Miami I believe.

I am not sure I buy the Miami idea, it sounds great but from a financial perspective they are going to come up short they will roughly 2 mil short of the MLE as a tax payer.

But they are going to have to pay 45 mil in taxes if they sign no one next season. To give Oden a 3.1 mil deal will cost them almost an additional 10 mil dollars. So sure if all he wants is the minimum he can go play for the Heat.

The problem with that scenario is that if he flames out that is it no more pay day. He can probably squeeze out a full MLE deal from someone like Roy did last season. Someone will do that but not if they are a lux tax payer.

It's a good point that Miami will be limited to give out even a Ray Allen-type deal this offseason. I wonder if that's what the in-season rumors were, an effort by Oden's camp to motivate Miami by floating the BOS/CLE rumors. I suppose we'll know if he's suddenly interested in Indiana in the offseason.

I would love to see him in Boston next year, as he's a rare shot at high end talent. But I'm not sure which is worse, seeing him land in MIA, or coming here and flaming out.
