Lets evaluate NYK's post season by player
Let's break this down.
The underachievers:
JR Smith (reg season: 42 fg%, 35% 3p% | post season: 33 fg%, 27 3p%, & terrible defense, especially against the Pacers). Got suspended and made the "we would be golfing now" comment. The worst player by far for the Knicks.
Tyson Chandler (reg season: 10.4 ppg, 10.7 rpg | post season: 5.7 ppg, 7.3 rpg (6.0 vs. Pacers), & terrible defense). Got completely exposed by Indiana's front court.
Jason Kidd (reg season: 37% fg%, 35 3p% | post season: 12 fg%, 17% 3p%, & played poor defense). He did help for a game vs. Boston by getting some steals and hitting a couple 3s, but went scoreless in last 10 games.
Carmelo Anthony (reg season: 45% fg%, 33 3p% | post season: 40 fg%, 29% 3p%, & terrible defense). Had some solid shooting games, but he ultimately proved that you don't want to have him as your best player if you want to have post season success.
Mike Woodson: Self-explanatory.
The zero contributors:
Steve Novak (played a total of 50 mins)
Quentin Richardson (played a total of 15 mins)
James White (played a total of 10 mins)
Marcus Camby (played a total of 3 mins)
Earl Barron (didn't play at all)
The semi-helpfuls:
Raymond Felton raised his fg% (by .017), but his 3p% feel (by 0.039). Had a good Boston series (maybe NY's best player), but had a poor Pacers series (except for his 50% 3-point shooting), especially last game in Indiana (went 0-7 & had 2 turnovers). Sub-par defense at PG position.
Kenyon Martin average 4.5 rpg in 21.1 mpg in the post season. Did block some shots, but couldn't help at all on the glass or defensively vs. Hibbert & West. Too small & doesn't have rebounding instincts. Made the "wear funeral colors" comment.
The positive players:
Chris Copeland had a terrible Boston series (0 fg%, 0 3p%), but a great Pacers series. (Vs. Indiana: 48 fg%, 55 3p%; which are both improvements over his impressive reg season shooting #s of 47.9 fg% & 42 3p%)
Pablo Prigioni's field goal percentage dropped but this 3-point percentage rose. (reg season: 45 fg%, 39 3p% | post season: 39 fg%, 43 3p%). He played above average defense at the PG position. Would have had a bigger impact if Woodson played him more.
Iman Shumpert was the only Knicks player to actually raise his game/production for the post season. He is the only player to see all of his shooting percentages increase (reg season: 39.9 fg%, 34.9 3p%, 78.8 ft% | post season: 41 fg%, 42.9 3p%, 85.7 ft%), and his defense also was much better in the playoffs.
-
Iman Shumpert was basically NY's Paul George. He defended the best offensive player on the opposing team and helped his own team out on the offensive end. The only real negative thing I saw was that he wasn't able to exploit the David West match-up until game 6 when he knocked down three straight 3-pointers in a row. His 41% shooting wasn't great, but even that wasn't so bad because he rarely shot over 10 fg/game. His shooting should improve over the next few seasons.
Shumpert is exact type of player the Knicks need to model their team after. JR Smith is the exact opposite type of player the Knicks should model their team after.
Sad note: It's really amazing how many of the Knicks players underachieved in the playoffs.

what type of defense was melo supposed to play against a stronger player while on one shoulder?
game 6 wouldve been a blowout had it not been for melo

Yep. Melo gave us the time that we needed to find someone else to hit a shot.

(whispers) Keep this between me and you
Melo averaged as many rebounds as David West did
What do I care...it's rigged anyway

Anyone he tries to berate Melo this year is playing themselves...With all due respect because you're a fellow Knick fan- stop, seriously...

Re: Lets evaluate NYK's post season by player
And Martin was a +10 playing a bigger Hibert while Tyson was a -17... If Martin started over Tyson in the Indy series we would be talking about game 7 right now... Another player you need to take off that underachieving list...

Melo shouldn't have been playing West in the first place, that is part of the problem of constantly playing small ball.

Would you rather having him playing George? Melo can't guard small forwards.

Kidd-
provided nothing on either end of the court
consistently spotted the opposition points by blowing layups
Woodson playing him 30mpg lost us games, lost us quarters, and was a real factor in us losing this series.

Re: Lets evaluate NYK's post season by player
my problem with playing Kidd so much is very simple
WE HAD OTHER PEOPLE TO PLAY IN FRONT OF HIM.
Guys that had a better chance of producing. Like Cope, like Shump, like Prigs.
You cant blame Woodson for playing a guy like Tyson. WHO THE HELL ELSE DO WE HAVE? Camby was hurt, and last I saw him, he was getting abused by Reggie Evans earlier in the season.

i know we played horrible defense, but look at our point totals given up.
we lost this series because of a lack of second scoring option that at worst could provide replacement level scoring.

If anyone other superstar shot 40/29 for the playoffs, they would be crucified. But Melo fans keep defending Melo.

The overlooked aspect of Kidd's awfulness was his inability to track down loose balls and rebounds, especially evident in game 6. Twice, late, he was closer to a loose ball and Indy's quicker guards got there first and turned it into 2 scores.

Against Indiana Melo averaged 28.5/7.8/1.3 on 43.3/34.8/86.8 shooting. Stop hating. He underachieved but not much.
Meanwhile JR (13.5/5.0/1.3 on 29/23/74 shooting), Shump (9.7/5.2/1.3 on 38/35 shooting), and Tyson (6.2/6.0 in 29.8 mpg) all came up pretty small. Melo was our best playoff performer. Problem was that other than the Boston series he got no help.

i dont remember this, but it just underscores how he was consistently a detriment to the team
a lot of people will say that Tyson had the worst postseason, etc. But you have to live with that matchup. If Hibbert dominates, that's what you have to live with. We have no other options. You can look or blame Tyson's neck, or whatever, but it's a simple fact. We had little to no other option than to continue to play him against Hibbert.
Now, playing Kidd is an entirely different story. Waiting until game 5 to play Copeland is a different story. Only letting Prigs play in the first half of every game besides g6 is another story.
These were coaching decisions that had a direct impact on the outcome of the series.
JR being a mental midget is unavoidable. But playing Kidd 30mpg, not letting Prigioni play in the second half, not letting Cope play 20 minutes, letting JR play 30 instead of 20m... all these are avoidable.
Hibbert dominating Chandler is not.

Melo was fine. Almost everyone else was the problem in this series.
