Wouldn't have the energy to do a roster analysis now, but the nutshell conclusion is easy to make. The collective contributions made by our roster in the playoffs was pretty woeful.

We were neither productive nor deep.

And the coach nullified any potential for our bench to get into the rhythm of being contributors on a regular basis during the playoffs.

So many old and unavailable players really sank this team, though even if we had more available talent I can't even say this coach would have used it or utilized it well. He still may have overplayed JR and Kidd.

Melo as an underachiever?

Calling Carmelo Anthony of all players out? Sad.

The man just averaged 28.5 points off a FG % of .433% against the leagues number one ranked defense. I repeat 28.5 points per game along with a FG% of .433% against the leagues number one rated defense while having no help whatsoever. Pretty damn impressive scoring ability was displayed.

Also, quite funny how you refused to mention/acknowledge how Carmelo Anthony just averaged 7.8 rebounds per game against the leagues number one rated rebounding team. Had games of 5, 6, 7, 9, 9 and 11 strong boards off the glass. But yet, no mention of Anthony's productive rebounding playing with one shoulder? Nice to know.

What a thread. Considering Carmelo Anthony as an "underachiever"? Damn. Welcome to the offseason men.

OP believes Melo is only as good as being the 4th or 5th best player on a championship team--that's all you need to know about this thread.

Jared Zwerling ‏@JaredZwerling 26s
Spoke with Marcus Camby's agent regarding the playoffs and his future. He said, "He has been healthy for a while now."

Idk why Marcus didnt play.

because Woodson is like Mike Dantoni but much more subtle and understated about it.

IF knicks had won game 1, we probably would play game 7 by now. But carmelo didnt give a **** that game. He lacks basketball IQ. The attitude that they brought that game was the worst Ive seen. Chandler has to go for some two way players and smith should get his minutes reduced while shumperts is elevated.

Talk about counting the number of ZEROES on the game stat sheet. The bench really hit the wall.

Smith was never the same after that elbow in Boston (again, this team is so sensitive to SMAC talk). Wouldn't shock me if Smith took a better deal elsewhere.

Fans are forgetting Woodson burned out Kidd during the regular season when Shump was healing and Felton broke his hand. He's older than Grand dad. It showed he was out of gas. Didn't Grunnie sign him for two more years?

K-Mart was great in short stretches but he gives up too much height to handle the front court. Btw loved that it took Grunnie to be held hostage by old an Sheed's injury and Camby before he would sign K-Mart.

Copeland was great and not enough trust from Woodson to play him more. He was a life saver in Game 5. Best 29-year old Rookie?

Then there's Marcus Camby who collected a Jerome James-esque paycheck. Maybe next season he will play a game or two.

Would you rather having him playing George? Melo can't guard small forwards.

George is not an elite offensive player so having Anthony guard him isn't a big issue.

As far as Anthony can't guard small forwards? HUH? Up until D'Antoni and Woodson decided Anthony was somehow a PF, Anthony had been a SF for his entire career. His natural position is SF. If anything the argument is that he shouldn't be guarding opposing PF's cause the pounding he has to take (see shoulder, see back, see knee, etc) is not conducive if the Knicks have to rely on him so heavily.

The Pacers would have doubled down on Anthony with both guys...and even tripled teamed with Hibbert...since (ready for the real problem) the Knicks have no other real 2nd option...not to mention a C that doesn't really need to be guarded in Chandler.

The underachievers:
JR Smith (reg season: 42 fg%, 35% 3p% | post season: 33 fg%, 27 3p%, & terrible defense, especially against the Pacers). Got suspended and made the "we would be golfing now" comment. The worst player by far for the Knicks.
Tyson Chandler (reg season: 10.4 ppg, 10.7 rpg | post season: 5.7 ppg, 7.3 rpg (6.0 vs. Pacers), & terrible defense). Got completely exposed by Indiana's front court.
Jason Kidd (reg season: 37% fg%, 35 3p% | post season: 12 fg%, 17% 3p%, & played poor defense). He did help for a game vs. Boston by getting some steals and hitting a couple 3s, but went scoreless in last 10 games.
Carmelo Anthony (reg season: 45% fg%, 33 3p% | post season: 40 fg%, 29% 3p%, & terrible defense). Had some solid shooting games, but he ultimately proved that you don't want to have him as your best player if you want to have post season success.

Yea, man. I mean, could Melo have spread his talents a little more evenly? MAYBE...but his role since he got here has been to be the guy who shoulders the offensive load. If you want to complain about Melo holding onto the ball too long/lack of defense/etc then Coach Woodson should be called out because he FAILED to make any adjustments and green lit to what Melo was doing (plan A) all along.

I think JR Smith, Kidd, and Tyson Chandler deserve to be called out. Even Felton, to a lesser extent.

I think Novak deserves an INC. How can someone get a grade being played 1 min a game?

STAT and Camby, the DL front court get a pass because there is something more to Camby not playing considering STAT has NO KNEES and still gets play time.

Defensively West is a much better match up for Melo than George. He does a much better job banging with bigger guys than guarding smaller quicker guy on the perimeter. he may take more of a pounding on the defensive end playing bigs, but we're a better team with him doings so.

You must have not paid attention to the games. Anthoony's problem wasn't his post defense. It was everything else. A hurt shoulder shouldn't stop a player from rotating properly and moving his feet. If I wanted to, I could put together a reel of all of Anthony's terrible defense, but I'm sure I don't have to because that guy who makes youtube videos point out how bad the Knicks defense is will probably make it for me. JR Smith was far worse than Anthony if that helps y'all feel better.

I won't even mention how much times he held the ball on offense and chucked up terrible shots. Every game he would make comments about those shots being ones that he normally makes. If every game you have to make those comments, maybe those aren't shots that you normally make. He had a good first three quarters vs. Pacers in game 6, but that doesn't qualify has evaluating his ENTIRE post season play. There are legit reasons why he, Smith, & Felton haven't had much playoff success, and it was evident why.

He most definitely underachieved in this post season, especially since he was shooting over 50% in the month leading into the playoffs. His FG% dropped almost 5%! His 3-point percentage almost 4%! Y'all going to be making excuses for him until he leaves New York w/o even getting to the ECF once. The NYK are not getting to the ECF with Anthony at the #1 player, not unless the EC changes dramatically and become way weaker than it currently is.

The fact that some people are harping on the fact that I put Anthony in the Underachievers category instead of the Semi-helpful category shows how sad this fan base is.

The first two games or so vs. Boston Anthony was efficient. He shot about 45% and the Knicks won. If he is efficient then the Knicks can win with him as the #1 option. The problem is that he almost never is efficient.

They probably wouldn't have won the series even if Anthony shot his normal 45% from the field & 33 from 3, because of the sever underachieving done by Chandler, Smith, and Kidd. Although, let's be honest, Kidd is not a key/pivotal player so his underachieving wasn't has harmful as the other 3 players'.

If the 4 players I listed as underachievers had given NY close to the same production and shooting %s as the regular season, the Knicks most likely would be getting ready to play in the ECF now. That statement is not made in malice (or in hatred of Anthoy), but is merely a statement of fact (or at least likely outcomes, because I cannot be 100% sure if they all produce like they did in the regular season that NY would have definitely beaten them).
