Report: Mavs 'intrigue' Dwight Howard

Post#1 » by Jinra » Mon May 20, 2013 9:54 pm

Writes Ken Berger of CBSSports.com wrote:The Mavericks represent another franchise that intrigues Howard, and Dallas is a minor transaction or two away from having enough room to sign Howard outright as an unrestricted free agent. Howard plans to explore all such options, and a person briefed on his plans told CBSSports.com that there are "several" teams the free-agent center is "going to take a hard look at."

But Howard is only 27, and barring a career-ending injury, he'll clearly get one more max deal after this one. A four-year deal with an opt-out after three years, for example, would in some ways be preferable to Howard because he'd hit the open market again at age 30 and could then secure his five-year max deal. Also, by signing with a team in Texas -- where the Rockets and Mavs obviously reside -- Howard would reap substantial savings by paying no state income tax. According to some early estimates, Howard's tax savings in Texas could approach $10 million over four years.

Paul and Howard are the two biggest names set to hit the NBA's free agent market at a time when the Mavericks have cash and are in desperate need for a superstar. Comparing the two:

And Deron Williams was intrigued because he was from here. I mean I'm glad that Dallas is a possibility but I just cant get too excited about all this just yet.

We know we're a good market, team, area and everybody respect Cuban and Carlisle, even Donnie besides his horrid drafting skills, but that's not enough, they've got to get it done, if we finish at finalists for all the top tier free agents, we're done.

In any normal case I'd say the Mavs have no shot at Howard but Howard is anything but a normal case so who knows what will happen.
It would be interesting if Cuban could talk him and CP3 into signing 4 year deals with the 3rd year as a player option. That would be perfect timing for us and Dirk would have a good opportunity to retire on top.

Dallas may intrigue him now, but that second has now past. Someone else intrigues him. Then someone else.

The net of it is that you have to get his attention, then his immediate signature. That gnat-like attention span is tough to corner and make a wise decision

If he can pass a physical and show he has something left to offer yes that would be nice. At least he has size and can clog the middle for cheap now that he's a big injury risk.

Here is a great read on why Dwight goes to Texas. The article uses Houston as an example. But nobody wants to tussle whith Mark. Thats what is great about an owner like Mark. Players know he will do whatever he can to put a winner on the floor. There are also some articles floating around saying that Chris Paul might be the preferred choice.

I posted this because this is more of the whirlwind of rumors as the mill starts to pick up speed.

I really feel sorry for Dwight in the sense that he is keeping quite this time around and now writers are developing all this sources to speak on Dwight's behalf. And, the sources are adding a new team everyday. So, Golden State had popped on the scene today. My gosh.

If everyone re-signs with them, the Warriors have 74 million committed to the salary cap next season. Unless they can make do a big S&T I don't see them as a player in getting Howard.

I believe Howard re-signs with LA. He leaves too much on the table not to do so. What is it? 5 years low 90 million with the Lakers and only 4 years low 70 million with other teams. The only way he doesn't is if the Lakers don't want to commit that much money to a guy who couldn't take them far in the playoffs. Possible. But unlikely.

What is next? Dwight Howard wants to play in Charlotte for Jordan?
