2013 MLB Draft

Post#1 » by Air Poohdini » Thu Oct 4, 2012 2:57 am

The Cubs will be receiving the 2nd pick in the 2013 MLB draft, which is very good news for the Cubs moving forward.

If we're bad, might as well be really bad to get the better pick.

This is the highest pick we've had in awhile.

Any ideas on which pitching prospects we'll likely be looking at with that pick?

Mark Appel, Ryan Stanek, or Shohei Otani if he decides to be added to the MLB Draft.

Appel would be really nice to land. Is he the unanimous #1 pick though?

I think it's between Austin Meadows and Mark Appel as the first pick in the draft.

I've read a lot about the Cubs choosing Sean Manaea over Mark Appel.

6'5 left who throws mid 90's. I would be happy with either. I doubt the Stros go Appel though as he'll be expensive and what he did last year when he got drafted.

Theo made the comment at the Cub Conv. that normally a position player is safer pick at the top of the draft.

Strasburg and Price worked out qutie well at the top of the draft but I'm guessing he's referring to no pitching prospects in this draft that would come close to those 2. I found it interesting that we passed on Appel at 6 last year. If we passed on him at 6 last year, would we take him at 2 this year?

I think it was well known my most teams (except Pitt.) that Appel was going back to school for his senior year.

I am hoping for Appel to be selected by the Cubs this year.

Those guys are young enough to still ruin their careers with arm injuries (Strasburg more than Price). Thats a big part of why position players are better bets. Its not just skil, but health. EVERY pitcher has a floor that is "out of league" due solely to arm issues. Mark Prior us a great example of this.

(Not to say I wouldn't take a Strasburg if he was in this draft. But if there was a Strasburg and a Harper, I'd take the Harper).

I've been going through numerous websites that have mocked this years MLB Draft, and in the end it all boils down to who the Astros pick first.

Its should be between Mark Appel and Jonathan Gray, I hear the Astros are favoring Gray over Appel.

Appel might be ready for the rotation right away. One of the most "ready" prospects in awhile.

With Appel represented by Boras and likely looking for a very large payday that might turn the Stros off as they look to continue to be cheap.

But that was last year when Appel had more leverage because he had the opportunity to go back for his senior year, but now he has no choice for the team who drafts him this year. He'll still get paid but I don't think it'll be over the slotted amount.

Point is that HOU could come to an agreement with someone else under that slot thus saving them more money. Hypothetical, of course.

Reported via the wiretap that the Cubs have narrowed it down to the two SP's we've been talking about as well as 2 3B.

It's either going to be Appel or Gray, we need pitching in the system anyways.
