Re: Official 2013 Draft Thread - Part V
Porters being pretty underrated.
Draws fouls at a high rate, can hit off the dribble, great length, young, great in transition, good long ball, can pass.
Played in a good conference. Efficient type of basketball. Georgetown played at a slow pace.
No brainer pick.
Also we can afford to keep Porter Ariza and Webster.
People are overvaluing Webster. The reigning sixth man of the year is rumored to get 5 mil a year for a team that would be done without him.
Webster with his injury concerns would get 4 PER max. With some hardball probably 2.5 or 3.
Keep Ariza for 4 PER.
Good depth off the bench, Porter starting SF and can play some PF.

There is no guarantee that Grunfeld or Whitt will even be here next off season. I'm hoping for the most polished player that we can get for this reason. Porter is a no brainer in my opinion because he offers immediate help but also upside and work ethic/ intangibles.
1st round
Porter
Oladipo
Bennett
2nd Round
Muscala
Jackie Carmichael
Livio Jean Charles
hoping for a vet backup pg via FA

I don't think stretch 4 is a need personally. It'd be a nice luxury. But we could use scoring in any format. Not many teams have a good stretch 4. And a lot of the ones that do have good stretch 4s aren't good--Milwaukee, Minnesota, New Orleans, etc. They aren't make or break players.

CLE will still take Nerlens because they will still be able to suck for a year and secure another top 3-5 pick next season for a skilled forward (Randle, Gordon, Parker). Orlando will either take Burke or trade with someone seeking Nerlens (Charlotte is a suitable partner b/c everyone knows we wont take Burke)

Porter's standing reach is the same as Josh Smith. He has an all-around game and plays both ends. I think he has to be number 1 on the Wizards board.
Cleveland isn't going to take Porter first overall. Everyone is saying this is a two player class and McLemore and Noel are those two players. They'll take one of those guys most likely, or they will trade down. If they trade down while targeting Porter, then he'll be there at three for us unless we trade down too. I'm pretty confident Porter is going to be there for us if we want him.

As others have mentioned, we need a star big. That should be the goal of every move we make. If one isn't in the draft, then we need trade assets to get one down the road. Start there, rather than momentary team needs. What our team needs is a star big (or the assets to get one).
Step 1: Get the 13th pick (if possible). Many steals late in the first this time.
Step 2: Attempt trade for star big (Cousins, Hofford, Monroe)
Step 3: Draft the BPA - which is probably Dipo or Noel.
Step 3a: If we draft Dipo (or Porter); sign Rodrigue Beaubois and Marco; use 13 on project big.
Step 3b: If we get a big and resign Webster, use 13th pick on a PG.
We are stil gathering pieces. We are not a finished product. Draft, trade and sign with the future in mind. Next year, we will make the playoffs (if healthy) no matter what we do with the pick. The question is how to get what we need to grab the higher rung. If we don't plan that now, we will be stuck for years.

I still think Zeller is going to go way earlier than 10ish. I would much rather we pick the guy we want at 3 even if it's a reach than trade down to the mid/late lottery and have to settle for what's left and try and shoe horn them into our construction.
Yeah, if they don't trade the pick, I would go with Zeller - assuming Noah isn't there. He had a bad NCAA tournament, so fans are down on him, but his combo of size, skills, athleticism, and work ethic are rare. Quality bigs are very hard to find - especially ones that play both ends of the court. Porter is probably as good a 3 as Zeller is a 4/5, but quality 3's are nowhere near as difficult to find. And the Wiz need to add 2 quality bigs for the long term, imo. If they add zero this offseason, it puts them in a bind for the future.
I would still favor a trade with Utah - getting Kanter and the 14th pick - and taking the BPA regardless of position (other than a guard who can play only 1 position) with that pick.

Wise's article reads like someone who didn't do his homework, and wrote it before the lottery took place. I think Wise, like a lot of us, thought we were going to pick 8th or 9th so he wrote it as that's where we're picking.

Agreed. Noel goes first, as someone else mentioned CLE wants to suck for another year (despite what Gilbert's kid said during the lottery). Then I can see somebody like Charlotte moving up for McLemore. That leaves Porter for us, which is just fine by me.
I also agree with those that are saying we need to try to get back into the mid-first to get a big man prospect. We may have to take on a contract to do it, though. Something Ariza+2nd for somebody with an extra year on their deal and a first.

Either stupid or incredibly short-sighted. He can choose. His goal would be to make the playoffs - get swept in the first round - and then go back to 30 wins a season. I would like to think that's not what the "fan base" wants.

I guess 2, Porter, and 3 Dipo/Bennette.

Otto Porter height w/o shoes 6' 7.5" Weight 198 wingspan 7' 1.5" standing reach 8' 9.5 no step vertical 27..0 lane agility 11.25 dash speed 3.4
Kevin Durant height w/o shoes 6' 9" weight 215 wingspan 7' 4.75" standing reach 9' 2" no step vertical 26.0 lane agility 12.33 dash speed 3.4
Shabazz Muhammad height without shoes 6' 4.75" weight 222 wingspan 6' 11" standing reach 8' 8.5" no step vertical 29.5 lane agility 10.99 dash speed 3.32
a superstar forward was kevin durant and why is durant so dominant. there is only one category that makes kevin durant exceptional for a small forward. his standing reach.
Kevin durant has a 9'2 standing reach which is the same as a center. Durant's standing reach is almost 5 inches higher in the sky than porter and six inches higher than muhammad's before durant even leaves his feet. the ball is already 6 inches higher in the sky than anyone that guards durant on any given night during 82 games of the year when he is shooting on the perimeter and taking his man to the hole.
When you draft a player a franchise player, you should be able to point to physical attribute they have they ranks them in the top percentile.
the thing that stands out to me about muhammads is that he packs on 20lb weight to his back and he still moves faster than porter. both muhammad and porter have a nearly identical standing reach which is way more important than height and even more alarming about porter is that even though he has 20 pounds less weight, his dash speed was slower than both durant and muhammad who both have nearly 20lbs more weight. even more interesting with muhammad is his 9 percent body fat. If he loses that, he is going to be even quicker than what his measurables show, where are porter has the weight of a point guard. Usually, a player is more athletic with less weight because they are lighter. As you get heavier, you get slower but more powerful. Otto Porter will have to add at least 20 lbs to even have a chance to hold his spot on the block. Had otto porter showed elite lane agility like in the 10.50 category, then i would say we are dealing with an athlete who will slow down a little bit as he puts on weight but still be elite with his movement. there is nothing at all about otto porter that is elite outside of his basketball iq.
What the wizard's need is a front court player who is guaranteed to dominate in the stat categories that his suppose to dominate at. When I say dominate, i mean rank within the top five at the stat categories that he is suppose to be dominant at for his position. In top 5, you don't draft role players. You trade back and pick up value if you are targeting a role player.
I look at bennet and see his quick first step and power at the four position. He is undersized though so he comes off the bench.
We have nene who is injury prone and not a top echelon rebounder. We have seraphin who is a horrible rebounder. we have okafor who is an above average rebounder but doesn't change the game. We have no young bigmen prospects that project to be dominant in the categories they are suppose to dominate at to grow with beal and an wall for the next decade. Seraphin is a bench player that projects to be a above average post scorer and projects to be below average in all other categories. If a player isn't a dominant rebounder coming into the league, he won't be a dominant rebounder ever. I don't know of any cases of a dominant rebounder being mediocre at the early stages of his career. This team needs a dominant offensive and defense rebounder in the worst way. A healthy Andrew Bogut with a jumpshot. Bogut dominant rebounder offensively and defensive, shot blocker, has a mean streak to him, and can run complex offensive sets. that's what beal and wall need in a young bigman. Nene and okafor are close to expiration, and when they expired, and we are doomed for playoffs each year, there will be no hope of adding the player -----the young player then need in teh front court. if the plan is to hope booker, vesely, and seraphin will become elite rebounders and rim protectors that rank in the top five in any statistics category than bigmen normally dominate in.
McGee was the closest thing we had except we learned than he didn't have quick feet and he has poor lower body strength, otherwise, he would have been perfect. Porter and Bennet don't solve the our young andrew bogut with a jumpshot problem. Okafor and Nene only make sense if they were on major decline but were allstars in the their prime like duncan. Nene and Okafor never lead their teams to the playoffs and have never dominated in the statistical categories or ranked in the top five. so expect them to get better as they near their expiration dates makes no sense at all. My only hope is Newman knows what needs to be done and the leonsis trust him to max over grunfeld.
Now if otto porter had a standing reach like paul george so to bring thing back full circle. Lebron James weight 260 pounds and his legs are so powerful that he can lift 260 pounds and bring his head over the rim. that elite physical profile that puts in the top percentile.
Paul george 8'11 9'0 standing reach and he plays shooting guard with elite handles. what shooting guards can match 9'0 standing reach.
Porter might be a poor man's paul george if he played shooting guard but at small forward his advantages are negated because he weighs 196 lbs and he has no explosiveness 27 inch vertical.
durant isn't explosive but his extra five inches on his standing reach pushed his no step vertical up to 32 inches.
so again durant has a crappy vertical of 27 inches but since he is normally 5 inches longer than who ever guards him. That five inches is added to durant's crappy 27 inch vertical to make him elite. Porter doesn't have the extra length to make up for his crappy vertical.
finally, you don't use max vertical on a jumpshot, you use standing vertical. that's the more important number. only time you use max vertical is when you are running full speed and jump on fast break. Now if you lightening quick with the ball in your hands, then you can use your full max vertical but a front court player always uses a standing vertical on a jumpshot and standing in the paint jumping for rebounds. always value the standing vertical unless a player can get into the lane with lightening ball handling ability.
Kevin Durant height w/o shoes 6' 9" weight 215 wingspan 7' 4.75" standing reach 9' 2" no step vertical 26.0 lane agility 12.33 dash speed 3.4

I don't want anything to do with Bennett. Boom or bust type of player and with our luck he will bust. A 6 foot 7 PF who thinks he is a guard. Eh..

Porter's max vert is 36" and his standing reach of 8'10.5" is very good for a 3.

I don't see Porter as a stretch 4 possibility. At most, he gets up to 225 - which is far too light, imo. And while he's long for a 3 and a good rebounder for a 3, he would be below average for a 4. Ariza is a slightly better candidate for that - and still not a good one, imo.
Withey is a confusing player to rate. He's nowhere near as hefty as Asik. Measuring in at 222 will raise questions about his strength. At 23 years old, he's matured physically. Watching him play - he appears to hold his ground very well and not have a problem with strength - but giving up 25 lbs to his man... it's got to be a concern. Withey is really a much more skilled and fluid offensive player than given credit for - much moreso than Asik. If he can pass the strength hurdle, he's going to be a starting center in the NBA.
