Poll: Alternate Reality Of This Team

Post#1 » by Purple+Black » Wed May 22, 2013 11:21 pm

Had we not traded our pick this year + not signed Landry Fields or tried to trade for Steve Nash, where would this team have been today? Some people are quite optimistic with our current line-up, but the ones that aren't are justified in their stance because they look at what could have been (and B.C. screwed it all up).

1. No trade for Rudy Gay (Ed Davis still on the team)
2. Jose Calderon expires.
3. We finish with a mediocre record, obtain the 7th pick.
4. We would be in position to successfully tank for arguably the best draft class in a decade.
5. We still have an amnesty clause left to use, creating cap space.

Going into 2013/2014 season, a core of:

Trey Burke?
Terrence Ross
DeMar DeRozan
Ed Davis/Amir Johnson
Jonas Valanciunas

With an added motive, this squad is enough to fuel development and skew the final record enough to guarantee a top 5 pick, and a legitimate chance at 1st/2nd/3rd - which are 'ALL' home runs in this draft. & it keeps the dream alive, and more than possible.

Trey Burke
DeMar DeRozan/Terrence Ross
Andrew Wiggins
Ed Davis
Jonas Valanciunas

+ Free Agency.

I have to say, I like the team we have today. Definite playoff contender for sure.

Trey Burke is already better than Jose Calderon. If the inferior PG would lead us to a mediocre pick, Burke would take us right back to 9th seed limbo.

Go further back, to trading Jarrett Jack. And further, to the Bosh fiasco. And further, to Hedo. And even further, to trading for Marion. And keep going, to Trading for JO/trading away TJ Ford. Before that? There's drafting Bargnani.

There are so many places to splinter into alternate universes. It seems like we're possible in the the darkest timeline (or at least the won where Britta marries the pizza guy).

I think you guys really underestimate how large the difference between a veteran & a rookie is, specially when we're talking about point guards.

Trey Burke will be better than Jose Calderon.

Today, a good team with Calderon at the point will be better than one with a rookie pg/Burke at point.

See Portland (even with Aldridge & some great players.. Batum/Matthews)

Lillard is better than Calderon in his 1st year. POR is where they are because they do not have a C or a bench.

This team is closer to being a playoff contender than it is getting the top pick in the 2014 draft and drafting Wiggins. Deal with it.

What the hell is a playoff contender? Like, not a team which could contend in the playoffs, but one who could contend to make the playoffs? Almost 60% of teams make the playoffs...what the hell is the value of contending for that?

Closer? We're stuck right in the middle closer to the sucking end if you want to be honest.

No we're really not but since you're so pessimistic let's look at it your way. We can blow it up, trade away all our assets for picks, tank and probably end up with the 4th pick in next year's draft. Then we can have a bunch of mediocre rookies for a few years before they become free agents and leave. Then we repeat. Are we championship contenders yet?

Yes I'd take the alternate scenario right now, but that's not possible. The current position we're in I think we roll with what we have & strive for the second round next year.

if you could gaurentee that we'd get trey burke then I'd take the alternate reality

but realistically we'd end up with a lower tier guy like dario saric, alex len, or dennis schroeder

honestly I think the only 'draftee' that could save us will be coming out of next years draft and chances are even if we played the long game, like you mention here, we would still finish in the 9-10 range in the East and not have a shot at a top 3 pick
