Broussard: Flip to look at GM candidates?

Post#1 » by The J Rocka » Fri May 24, 2013 9:42 pm

New Minnesota Timberwolves president Flip Saunders has a lot on his plate, including hiring a new general manager. However, according to ESPN NBA Insider Chris Broussard, Saunders isn't going to make a hasty call on that matter, even though the draft is just a month away.

"Saunders is quietly doing background checks on potential GM candidates, but isn't planning to make a hire until after the draft, according to sources," Broussard wrote

One decision for Saunders apparently has already been made for him, as it sounds like coach Rick Adelman won't be leaving the team, despite his wife's health issues.

Later on, he emphasized that its WHEN and not IF

A 2009 interview with Newton

I’ve seen you involved in the draft in past years. How difficult was the decision to trade the 5th pick in the draft?

Milt Newton: “It wasn’t difficult at all…this is a team with a core that has been in place and last year we had quite a few young guys on our team…the decision to trade the pick and to pick up two established players in Foye and Milller made our team stronger…these are two solid veterans that will help our team and give us the deepest bench we’ve had since we’ve been here”

Milt, what did you see in Randy Foye that made you interested in including him in the trade? What do you feel he can bring to the team?

Milt Newton: “He’s a combo guard, he is a guy that can take you off the dribble and get to the basket. He is a TANK. He’s a physical guard and he’s talented. he can hit the spot up “J” and he could start on a lot of teams and he makes our team very deep. In general he is just a really good player that is going to help us.”

Yeah, hearing that name brought me right back to the 2009 off-season. His reasoning for getting depth to go along with that Gilbert Arenas lead team was the right idea but Foye & Miller...let alone for the 5th pick...

washington traded the 5th pick for our 3rd and 4th best players. that wolves team with foye and miller managed to win 24 games. in that year, miller decided to become a facilitator and had only one year remaining on his contract. foye on the other hand still didn't prove anything let alone show he could play point guard.

now I'm confused; I thought these were going to be Flip's duties - what is it exactly that Flip Saunders does again?

Flip is POBO. The GM will work under Flip, and probably head up the scouting staff

Yeah, I thought Flip was the GM. If Flip is controlling all the basketball stuff, couldn't they have just switched Kahn over to the off court management role since he's supposedly good at managing the finances?

So did Kahn handle both GM and President of basketball operations duties?

I 'think' that Kahn was the VP of Basketball Operations, meaning he was essentially a GM. Now that Flip is a partial owner, he is the President of Basketball Operations. By hiring his GM, he will have his second in command.
Seems odd to me and an unnecessary position. I don't really know what the President of Basketball Operations does if a GM handles scouting, contracts, and other front office duties we all think of. Seems really odd to me especially considering we have Adelman who should have plenty of say on his ideal team. If Flip can't handle managing scouts, negotiating contracts, and letting Adelman have a lot of say on who should be on his team, we picked the wrong "President of Basketball Operations."

This hire will be like what Ronzone was for Kahn.

Exactly. Just that all titles were down a level. Ronzone was an Assistant GM/Player Personal.

Not sure why Flip can't just hire an Assistant GM, Head of Player Personal, Head of Scouting, etc. I guess it is just a job title but having to hire a GM after hiring Flip just reads as goofy. I don't want another "Triangle of Authority" in Minnesota. :D

I don't know why everybody's so surprised. This is how it always was in this dysfunctional organization. McHale wasn't GM either, he was the vice POBO. Jim Stack was GM.
