It's just funny, because there's no clue who he's talking about. It could be any of Porter, Len, Zeller, Oladipo.

I mean I keep thinking he is referring to Porter because he was so big at Verizon Center this year, plus I know Ted is a GTown fan.

Ted isn't just a GTown fan. He's an alumnus and sits on GTown's board.

Not that that would influence our selection or anything.... :)

The only two guys on the roster that we have to consider when making the pick are Wall and Beal. Unless there is a Tier 1 talent available at their positions i don't see any reason to draft a guard at 3.

I concur, there is no way the Wizards draft a SG at number 3 in back to back drafts. The pick will be Porter or Bennett, stop being cute guys.

Beal's handles are adequate for a 2 playing next to Wall, but they won't hold up against the ball pressure he would face if he spent any time at the point. I don't see him ever playing that role with any success.

But I know he's been very high on Len for a while. And he's local I'm sure Ernie has seen tons of him. Plus him showing up at the Caps game.

Then again Oladipo is a local kid too. And I remember a point last year people were speculating Zeller could go #1.

I'd like to get one of those bathroom books of Ernie Grunfeld quotes throughout the years. Each quote with picture of Ernie with a really dumbfounded look on his face. They could actually throw plenty of Ted quotes. Or the Abe quote about Gar Heard blowing him away.

They could make toilet paper with the quotes on it. Now that's a good idea. Actually get something positive out of it.

If you watch the video, Givony prefaced his question by saying many pundits think this is a 2 player draft.... EG was basically saying, well we think its a three player draft... He would have said 4 player draft if the Wiz had gotten the 4th pick or whatever. I don't think he tipped his hand at all.

One thing is for sure if Zeller is the pick: he will score a lot of points. Wall could make Zeller a 16-20 point scorer right away.

I'm rethinking Zeller as well. I mean he tested so well at the combine, it really has relieved some of my concerns about him. He is so skilled, and he has a low post game. I think he could be very good at PF.

I have him moving up my Wizards board, with Bennett dropping. I'll also move Oladipo up a notch with Len a slight drop.

I would consider the 2nd rounder more position dependant on who we take at 3.

#3
Porter
Zeller
McCollum
Oladipo
Len
Bennett

#38
Muscala
Murphy
Green
Iverson
Hardaway Jr
McCallum

That looks like a decent board. Makes as much sense as anything. Though you might wanta add Jackie Carmichael to it since you have Iverson and Muscala

Starting as a reserve behind Okafor, I'm sure he'll be able to post up backup bigs. That being said, I'm not really interested in him in that role. With his shooting and perimeter skills, I'd like to see him in an Amare Type of role where he's used as a pick n pop guy who can also take it to the hole off the dribble.

This is Cavs based but they still work through all the top options.

The last 30 plus pages of this thread have been very interesting...filled with some good, informative stuff as well as some silliness. It's taken me 4 days to catch up.

Sounds like the top choices at #3 for most posters is either Porter, Bennett or Olapido. I started out favoring Bennett or Len when I thought the Zards would be drafting around 8 but now that Otto (or maybe Noel) are possibilities, I've got to go with Porter. Otto will always exceed expectations and if the consensus is that he'll be a good all-around player then it's likely Porter will be a very, very good player...maybe even an all-star. Otto has all the tools to be special on both ends of the court. I especially love his potential as a passer/offensive facilitator.

Bennett is a tempting option. I can't say I know enough about him to have a good feel as to whether he'll be the offensive stud that some project him to be or a tweener who might be a slightly better version of Rodney Rogers. I just can't take Bennett over Porter, but he would probably be my second pick if Noel and Porter are gone...although I'd be tempted to take McLemore as trade bait. A lot of teams will want McLemore who will be a star.

VO will be an impact player but he's a SG and not a SG/SF and, as others have said, it would be a mistake to use the third pick of the draft on a bench player, especially when the guy ahead of him at SG (Beal) is a younger, better player.

If I have a sleeper it's probably Zeller, especially since he plays a position where the Zards desperately need young talent. Zeller's combine numbers were impressive...very athletic for a big and if he can stick the midrange jumper he's a top 5 player in this draft.

Bennett is the ,most skilled offensive player in the draft. I'd be surprised if he didn't continue to develop offensively, including a post up game.

At this point, I still think Bennett is the right pick for us, but would be excited if its Zeller or Porter as well. Not so much Olapido, as I think we should be drafting starters at this point.

From what I understand it's definitely a work in progress and not advanced at all, what Jive discusses is exactly where he's at right now. Basically a weapon that can play inside driving to the hoop, and has a sweet jumper that stretches beyond the arc, back to the basket skills are not there yet.

In comparison that's like drafting a guy to stretch the floor as a hyper efficient shooter in college despite him only having 30 attempts.

And all of this is assuming Oladipos effiency transfers over 1 for 1 to the NBA, which is highly unlikely. If he takes a modest notch off of his effiency, is he even worth the MLE to a team, let alone as a guy you pick with a top 5/6 pick?

That's not true. He's been compared to Tony Allen for his defense - and Allen is arguably the best wing defender in the NBA. Tony Allen with a consistent jump shot would be an outstanding player.

Agreed.

The other piece that concerns me with Oladipo is the huge spike in his shooting efficiency this season. Someone -- I believe Nivek -- had mentioned that shooting efficiency is the most variable metric from year to year. So maybe it isn't sustainable. Or maybe it is.

He's a lot like Bennett in that if someone is deciding to put him at the top of their board, it's based on unavailable evidence, and simply projecting out from hints. That's fine, there's a reason there's a gazillion GM's drooling after him. Elite athleticism, great proven skill and talent as an elite defender. Offensive game is a total unknown. Before this season he was largely irrelevant/mediocre and carried a second round grade. Then he had an outstanding year shooting that may or may not be an outlier for his career (a la Singleton, though as another poster showed, Oladipo's floor was higher than Singleton's offensively from the jump, ditto his ceiling in that area).

Another poster referenced Mitchell. I was watching a replay of the Elway to Marino 30 for 30 today and it reminded me why I love to speculate in players like Tony Mitchell. There are often no greater values on draft day, than highly thought of prospects that stink their final year and plummet down the charts.

Whomever drafts Mitchell is laying a tremendous, and perhaps the most valuable and quality odds bet of any team on any player in the draft this year. There are no better or more valuable and worthwhile targets in the 20's. He's got a 40 or 50% chance in my view of being one of the best five or six players in this draft and he should be available 18 picks are we make our selection. Somehow I doubt we're smart enough to target him, me thinks a team like San Antonio or OKC or Houston would do so instead.

This is a legitimate concern, but I tend to lean toward sustainable because he has a smooth and consistent release with decent elevation. Whether he's spotting up or pulling up, his mechanics stay the same. We know he's a gym rat, as evidenced by his improvement each year, so I think he'll be okay over time.

Allen is a good defender, but he's worse than LeBron or George, and I don't think he's really better than Bradley, Shumpert, Deng, Butler, Marion, Iguodala, Parsons, Kirilenko, Turner, Leonard, Green,...

There are a ton of awesome defenders out there, you don't pick them top5.

You guys (edit - last 2 posters) are seeing the trees and missing the forest. Oladipo is not a 1 dimensional player. He's not just a defender, and he's not just a shooter. He's a great defender, and he's an extremely efficient scorer.

I like Oladipo, but is it an ideal situation to run with three 6'4" guys at PG/SG/SF?

Unless Beal has a spurt and grows 3 inches. That would be fantastic. Drink more milk Brad.

I doubt it. He may be the most intriguing match of skill & physical strength but most skilled? Not by a long shot. He certainly has shown precious little off the ball, especially in terms of awareness. He has no post up game to speak of either. No post moves, no hook shot, he's strictly a face up 4.

Personally, I think Olynyk is the most skilled big in the draft, by a wide margin.
