Wouldn't a team with cap space that misses out on someone in free agency, be interested in acquiring a talent like Rudy Gay? Keep in mind, there's quite a few teams with cap space this summer, and not enough legit talent to spend it on. Take Atlanta for example - if they miss out on Paul, Howard, and don't re-sign Josh Smith, Rudy would seem to be a good fit there, no? Dallas maybe, since all they have is an aging Marion?

I mean, even though he makes a ton annually, his contract expires in a couple of years, at which point you can re-sign him for less, or simply let his contract expire.

I think Rudy will have value this offseason if Ujiri decides to deal him.

I strongly feel that Orlando is an ideal trading partner for us. Something along the lines of Demar and Andrea for Baby Davis and Affalo.

Davis is being shopped around, its clear also we have a need at the PF position, he has size and plays defence (I believe in one season he lead the BNA or was amongst the top tier in taking charges).

Affalo plays defense can shoot the 3pt and is still serviceable.

HELL NO. That is the worst deal I've seen for us in a long time.

We're unloading two big assets in Ross and a 2014 pick just to dump Bargs for a scrub and a mid first in a week draft? Craziness. Might as well just buy Dallas' #13 and call it a day.

I was thinking about that yesterday

I would ask for #26 as well. Not sure how I feel about it though, is it worth it?

I'd prefer to keep Stew and give Monte Morris
I'd really prefer to keep Morris and Stew and give the great Killian Hayes and 2nd round picks

We can grab a better SG prospect than Ross by buying DAL 13th pick so yes.

Wolves would never do Bargs and Ross for Williams and Ridnour. Bargs doesn't fit at all with what they need, then his contract is terrible.

I disagree. They need a SG in the worst way. I could see them insisting on Berea (extra year) being in the deal but it is a deal I could see happening

They do need a shooting guard in the worst way. Might as well draft KCP and call it a day instead of taking on Bargs contract. Then use Williams and Barea to bring in other players that could contribute right now.

P. Gasol's contract allows us to explore upside and rebuild

Post#1355 » by Double Helix » Sun Jun 2, 2013 12:44 am

One of the more persistent rumors last year for Bargnani that didn't involve the Bulls and Boozer involved LA and Pau Gasol.

Andrea Bargnani and Demar Derozan for the final year of Pau Gasol's contract could allow the Raptors to explore this core's contention potential while also giving Masai greater flexibility to blow it all up if the one year all-in attempt didn't result in one of the better Raptors seasons ever.

If it didn't work we would have Pau Gasol's 19 million dollar salary expiring and could start the rebuild sooner than the original 2 year window. In that case, we could do a sign and trade of Kyle and look to trade Rudy as a 1 yr rental. We'd then begin the tank/rebuild sooner.

If it did work and we had a great run we'd be in a better position to decide if we perhaps want to keep moving forward with the core as well. We'd still have Pau Gasol's salary expiring but rather than keep that money and start a rebuild we could make a run at a younger PF/C in Demarcus Cousins who'd be a restricted free agent. We could sell him on stepping right into Pau's old role. We'd have 19 million expiring so we could really force Sacramento's hand there and Masai has show a willingness to spend on troublesome talents (McGee). There are other free agent targets in the summer of 2014 as well (Deron Williams, Paul George, amongst many others).

Pau Gasol is perhaps the best trade target for Masai this offseason because he allows both team tank and team playoffs to decide which course seems better over the next 3-5 years sooner by giving us an impact PF/C for a year and a ton of cap space later on if it doesn't work out to start the rebuild sooner.

Thoughts?

Seems like a very solid option if LA would do it.

Would clear up the books in a big way.

How is it a dead horse? The Gasol rumor was one of the stronger ones going last season and could easily be on the table right now.

The Lakers wanted to see their core together before deciding what to do with him. They weren't good last year and may prefer an influx of youth and Bargnan's perimeter shooting on their team. Earl Clark cooled off quick and Dantoni loves his Italian offence-first players as much as Colangelo.

This thread explores how it might allow us to explore this core's upside while setting it up better with financial flexibility to rebuild sooner if necessary.

Gasol isn't getting moved until the Dwight Howard situation is fully settled.

You're basically giving away DeRozan for nothing. I don't like it at all.
