SEVEN-TIME NBA ALL-STAR GRANT HILL RETIRES

Post#1 » by mkwest » Sun Jun 2, 2013 12:30 am

The Los Angeles Clippers today announced that seven-time NBA All-Star Grant Hill will retire after 19 seasons.

For more than two decades, Hill, 40, has been one of the most recognizable basketball players in the world, highlighted by a standout collegiate career at Duke, an Olympic gold medal with Team USA at the 1996 Olympics and an illustrious NBA career that saw him earn five All-NBA honors and the 1994-95 Co-Rookie of the Year Award.

“The entire Clippers organization wants to congratulate Grant on an incredible career,” Clippers Vice President of Basketball Operations Gary Sacks said. “For 19 years, Grant has always been the embodiment of class, a true professional and not only one of the best players - but one of the finest individuals I have been around. We were fortunate to have Grant with us last season, and we wish him all the best in his next endeavor.”

I wish the Clippers would have given him a better send-off this season. Everybody had big hopes and it would have been great to see him get an opportunity to realize one of his dreams before he hung 'em up. Grant is pure class. He's had a lot of naysayers throughout his career that wanted to question his toughness, but I believe that he proved them all wrong.

I don't know what he has planned for his post-playing career, but he would bring a great addition of character and respectability to any franchise should pursue a front office role of some capacity.

i was about to post this.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nb ... s/2381113/

class act all the way, he is more likely to run for a political office than to work for a clipper FO imo.

well sad to see him go, his melo-shut down was an epic display of his talent this season, but vinny could have given him a better send off gift.

2 million more in cap room now. i believe that drops us below the lux tax?
ehhhhh f it.

damn it i did some research on the new CBA and we are still on the hook for hill's 2 million this upcoming year. grant may not get paid, but his salary remains on our cap.

now i am wishing for his return... grant has got to come back and play for us for his remaining contract.
ehhhhh f it.

61. What are the rules for retired players? What if the player suffers a career-ending injury?

There's nothing binding about a player announcing his retirement. The player can still sign a new contract and continue playing (if he's not under contract), or return to his team (if he is still under contract) and resume his career.

The only exception to this is when a player is still under contract, wants to quit, and his team doesn't want to let him out of his contract. Under these circumstances the player can file for retirement with the league. The player is placed on the league's Voluntarily Retired list (see question number 77), forgoes his remaining salary, and cannot return to the league for one year. The latter requirement prevents players from using retirement as an underhanded way to change teams, and can be overridden with unanimous approval from all 30 teams. For example, guard Jason Williams signed with the LA Clippers in August 2008, then changed his mind the following month, announcing his retirement. He applied for reinstatement in early 2009, but his request was denied by a vote of 24-6. Williams later signed with the Orlando Magic once the one-year anniversary of his retirement announcement had passed.

Any money paid to a player is included in team salary, even if the player is no longer playing or has retired.

Larry Coon, CBA FAQ

In order for Grant's salary to not count against the cap, he must file for voluntary retirement with the league.

not sure if im reading it wrong or you are.

the quote you posted is exactly what i've read earlier before and to me, the second paragraph is referring to the legal binding of a retirement announcement whether the player have a right to resume his career if he chooses to do so. it only means grant cannot come back for a year if he files for voluntary retirement. the last sentence states the money is included in team salary.

hope i am wrong.

If he retires like Jason Williams did then his salary is off the books. Remember when he retired his salary did not count against our cap. although he never did play a game for us.

No exception, but the team would benefit by not having his salary count toward the luxury tax threshold or tax apron (in the event we use the non-taxpaying MLE). The apron is $4M above the tax line. If you use the non-taxpayers MLE ($5.15M instead of $3.183M), the tax apron serves as a hard cap.

Lets hope he does this. That 2 million that he is owed for 2013-2014 could really help us. Love Grant Hill, but he was a non-factor for us and its great to see that spot available for someone whon can contribute

I know i was pretty excited when i heard he was retiring, but then as im reading all these posts we dont even get the benefit of the retirement because we still have him on the books:(

We are not going to have to pay him his salary and it's not going to count against our cap. Otherwise, it wouldn't be considered a "retirement". A player can't just say "I don't want to play any more but I still want you to pay me my guaranteed salary". I'm sure it says that some where in NBA contracts.

He doesn't get paid but if he unretired he's still ours for one season. I'm assuming that's why it s counts

The guy is a class act. I'm sure he will file all the official retirement paper work if he hasn't done so already. By the way, I think DTS should hire Grant Hill ASAP to some kind of front office position.
