I was kind of tip-toeing around what I really wanted to say, but my argument is not that they shouldn't rebuild or that they have a good chance at making the playoffs next year. My argument is that once you get to the point where you're saying you want to keep Segura, Gomez, Braun, and Gallardo but trade everyone else, that's a pretty half-assed rebuild. And you might turn right around and have a few surprising over-achievers next season, making you wish you had tried to stay in contention one more year. The window hasn't slammed shut. I think that's an over-reaction to a miserable half-season, and I don't think it's realistic to think this same roster would be this bad again next year.
To make a long story short, what I really wanted to say was that they should trade Braun, too. But I didn't want to seem contrarian or controversial for the sake of being controversial. I really think they should keep trying to piece it together as long as they want to keep him, or trade him if they're really ready to throw in the towel on this era of being regularly competitive. Now I wish I had said what I was really thinking, because the news of the possible 100-game suspension makes it look like I'm just saying "trade Braun" because of that.
All the talk about keeping Braun and a few others reminds me of when people wanted to keep Bogut and trade everyone else. That's rebuilding without having the guts to do what it really takes to make a successful rebuild far more likely.
