Something I noticed from McDonough's interviews...
One thing I have noticed from McDonough from his interviews is that he keeps saying "we will stack up draft picks and cap space and everything....BUT if a situation happens where we could go get a great player, we will do it" or something along those lines.
He's basically just citing what the Rockets did last year with Harden. They stacked up cap space, signed good role players like Asik, Lin and then drafted well with Parsons and loaded up a bunch of picks which they traded to get James Harden, "a great player".
Andrew Bynum is an All Star player. There has never ever been questions about his talent or skill level. He can do it all as a C. However, there are major character concerns with his game. But McDonough may be willing to take the risk with him and hope that a quieter market like Phoenix and a coach like Hornacek may be able to turn Bynum into the 2010-2012 version of Bynum.
Also, Aaron Nelson and the Suns miracle magic crew may be able to fix up Bynum's injury issues as well.
He's still only 25 years old and he has incredible superstar potential. With McDonough continuing to say that he will take his shot if he can get a big time player here, I wonder if he's talking about Bynum.
Bynum may cost a lot but the Suns do have the cap space. Besides, maybe McDonough can talk some sense into him and convince him that with Aaron Nelson in PHX, the Suns are his best possibility to gain a max contract. Maybe sign a 2 year deal with PHX and then if that goes well, then teams will be lining up to give him the max deal. It will mean that Bynum will basically be betting on himself.
BTW, I'm not endorsing this move. I don't really like Bynum that much but if McDonough were to make the move, I would support it and root for Bynum.

Re: Something I noticed from McDonough's interviews...
That's what I've been thinking too.
McD wants a guy to build around. Someone young enough to endure a year or two of gathering high draft picks, and also be able to compete at a high level once the rebuilding stage is over, and the team is ready to go all in to the Promised Land.
Bynum fit's that catergory IMO. As much as I love Dragic, he is not a Number 1 option. More like a third option on a contending team.
Lets say I would not be surprised to see Andrew Bynum as a Phoenix Sun next season. And, I would endorse it.

Bynum is not a great player. McD is not stupid.

I don't like Bynum, but wouldn't mind taking a shot on him if he accepts a decent contract since our trainers could revive him like they did with Shaq.
If he wants a max contract straight up tho, stay away.

I don't see Bynum being a target. He has all-star talent but he's too expensive, too injury-plagued and not focused on basketball at all. After the relatively cheap risk we took on Beasley and seeing it fail, I really can't see McD taking a more expensive risk on Bynum.

They drafted Parsons the year before they grabbed both Lin and Asik. They drafted Lamb before us before they signed the two guys you mentioned (draft comes before FA signings).
As for Bynum, I don't think our med staff can fix his problems. Plus I don't like him at all. He seems like a big baby, who likes to injure people when things don't go his way.

Re: Something I noticed from McDonough's interviews...
I think the only way they go after Bynum is
A) if our docs give him the clean bill of health, which they probably won't, because this guy's knees are worse than Amare's, and
B) if they can sign him to a 3 year deal only, with the last one being some sort of team option
A healthy Bynum is the 2nd best center in the league, behind a healthy Dwight:

I don't think we'll ever see a healthy Bynum again.
Also, if they go after Bynum, that means they pretty much have to trade Gortat for an upgrade at the wings, right?

I'm not concerned with Bynum's health as much as I'm concerned with his dedication to the game of basketball. Does he even like the sport? He seems more focused on bowling and other non-basketball related activities (see: http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/11/20/former-teammate-says-no-one-likes-basketball-less-than-andrew-bynum/). He was being paid a lot of money last year to play basketball and instead of rehabbing and trying to get back on the court, he did other things that actually set him back and resulted in him not playing one second last season. I'd assume there was a reason L.A. wanted to get rid of him and it was not because they wanted Dwight Howard.

Bynum is selfish, stupid and a thug. And his knee condition has been described as "degenerative". Thats about the worst health problem you can have, especially in a big. I would not be suprised if he never plays more than 40 games in a season again, and I fully expect him to be out of the league within 4 years.
I do not think McDonough has even considered Bynum. It is an extremely risky move that would almost certainly get whoever signs him fired within 3 years. Its the kind of move a moron like Blanks would have made.

Our med staff might improve his physical condition but it's between the ears with AB. Maybe they think Horny can reach him? I dunno, it's too risky given his near-max contract...

I wouldn't give him a max contract or anything close to it.
Any contract given to Bynum should have team options after the first two years.

Re: Something I noticed from McDonough's interviews...
1. heck no to Bynum, as someone already mentioned, 76ers already gambled on him and he didn't play any games for them because pretty much he doesn't have Kobe or Phil to light his butt up to play and train hard.
In his head he already has cashed up and basketball has become just an income to him, doesn't have the motivation or incentive to play.
2. I'd go all out for Cousins instead.
Gortat + Kieff Morris + Marc Morris + Marshall + 2014 top 8 lottery protected pick + 2015 Suns lottery protected pick
For
Cousins + Salmons + another bad contract
Cousins in a "nice" and "professional" cultured environment can be straightened out.

Re: Something I noticed from McDonough's interviews...
Just like what Boston did 5-6 years back. Stack draft picks and assets and trade them for already established guys.
Boston traded Al Jefferson and Theo Ratliff's expiring contract along with Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, Ryan Gomes, a future first-round draft pick and the return of a first-rounder the Wolves surrendered in the Wally Szczerbiak-Ricky Davis trade in January 2006.
Garnett blocked the original trade offer (by saying he would opt out after the 1st year), but later consented to the 2nd trade offer, only after Boston traded their #5 pick to Seattle for Ray Allen.
They then bought a draft pick (from us) and nabbed Rondo.
Doing all that allowed them to fast track rebuilding a contending team built around their drafted franchise star Paul Pierce.
So i could see McD following the Boston plan and doing this:
1. Draft BPA no matter the position. Give him plenty of developmental minutes and make him our main focus, thus improving his overall value.
2. Next year draft our "franchise" player. Trade a lotto protected future 1st for a former all-star (yet still a star) player. Trade our 2013 drafted player, along with a large expiring and other pieces for a allstar to put next to our "franchise" guy.
3. Now with 3 good pieces to start our rebuild with, fill in the gaps with well scouted drafted guys.

Eh, what's happened to Oden?
Similar high risk pick, except well.... he won't cost $10mill a year.

We wont be able to snag him. He's been working out in Cleveland and reportedly looks great. Boston has been monitoring him, as has the Cav's and Spurs. Reportedly, the Cavs have a multi year deal on the table, and Oden has shown great interest in playing for his home-team. Miami has also spoke to his agent and showed interest in him, and word is that the feeling is mutual.

He has many choices and im guessing the Suns are at the bottom of the list.

I hate Bynum because of his injuries and attitude, but I am all for him if he gets healthy. You'd just have to hope he would be a little more mature. It is tough being rich and young......... If you want to be great, you have to take a chance. A scary man will never win.
Dragic
Oladipo
.........
Scola
Bynum
plus our draft picks and trade bait Gortat, would be a good starting point.

If he was smart, the Suns would be at the top of the list simply because of our training staff alone.

But he has never been accused of being smart.
