Amnesty CV31 ~ $35 million in cap room.

Trade 1: DET in- Gallinari, Andre Miller LAKERS in- Koufas, Singler DENVER in- Pau Gasol

Lakers can amnesty Ron Artest and save ~$40-50 M in real dollars while replacing them with Koufas & Singler. Denver gets an all star level player they can add to their core. Pistons add a shooter & a vet pg.

Trade 2: DET in- Aaron Afflalo, Al Harrington ORLANDO in- Kim English, #38

Orlando frees up room to take McLemore & dumps Harrington's deal.

Knight/Miller
Afflalo/Stuckey
Gallinari/Middleton

Harrington is terrible and useless, that means you're paying Arron Afflalo 15 million/year. Afflalo is not a max player so this is laughable for us.

Very rarely do I agree with Vege but I wouldn't take on Harrington. They would have to offer up the second overall to even to be able to get me to listen.

We're going to take back Al, then they need to create a Magic uniform for Villanueva. They are not trading the no.2 overall.
Should be something like Stuckey/Villanueva for Afflalo/Harrington. With draft picks involved. I can't see the Magic going for pure cap space this offseason.

I find it a bit funny that everyone is focusing on the OP's Orlando trade rather than the Denver one (and the only post regarding the Nuggets deal is Jodi saying he wants Chandler instead of Gallinari). We'd get Gallinari (a borderline #1 offensive option at SF and tremendous shooter who would space the floor) and Miller (the perfect veteran backup PG we need) for Singler and cap space ... and no one comments on it? Is there lingering doubt about Gallinari's injury of which I'm not aware? 'Cuz otherwise, I'm thinking that's a lay-down steal of a trade for us that we would do in a heartbeat! Quite frankly, I'm pretty ambivalent about the Orlando part of the OP, but count me in for Denver trade.

Stern is a master controller. He is the best comissioner probably so he is just being the task master/controller he is.

Because there's a 1 in 25,000 chance this deal would ever be on the table. The Lakers can get a much better return on Gasol than Kosta Koufos and Kyle Singler. Even if they want to cut his salary ASAP they can trade him to, say, MN for a couple of firsts and Derrick Williams, to name just one idea. If the Lakers are going to start rebuilding, the first step is getting young and cheap assets out of your proven vets.

Harrington is a bad contract, but would you give up Monroe and #8 just to dump CV? That's what your proposal would sound like to Magic fans. Harris was killer the last two months of the year and the #2 pick in the draft is the #2 pick in the draft.

According to storytellers we have slightly less than $31 million committed for next season, which includes #8

With a cap of $58.5 we're looking at $27.5 mil in cap space without even dumping CV-DNP and Stuckey

#13 + Marion would take up approx $12.7 million which leaves us with $14.8 mil to spend

#22 + Humphries takes us another $13.1 mil... and we're done!

A likely Draft (using DX's latest Mock)

# 8 = Bazz... we get someone with a killer mentality to score from the perimeter

#13 = MCW... we get a big PG that could be a defensive weapon... allows Knight to stay off the ball

#22 = Crabbe... we get a shooter

Roster for 2013-14:

Monroe/CV-DNP/Marion
Singler/Middleton/Jerebko
Bazz/Stuckey/Crabbe/English

IF we gave Monroe $12 mil we'd still have $28.5 million to attract free agents - and if the kids showed something next season we'd be looking for back-up big men and veterans to "show them the way"

Are we better served renting out our cap space for youth/prospects and then having another look at free agency next off-season?

Some of this is worth looking at next year's FA class and the competition for cap space.

The other good thing about Pharoah plan is that we would keep our own pick because thats a 25 win team.

It would also accomplish the Fireing of Joe Dumars and whatever coach we hire this summer.

I agree, all three of those picks could be busts. But what's the alternative? We never committed to a full rebuild, and Gores and Dumars still don't want to go through with one. Some people probably want to sing the BPA in free agency, but doing so caps us at about 42 wins. A lot of us fans have been wanting a rebuild for 4+ years now, and Pharoah's plan--or a similar one--would let us have that. But it feels sort of late; we've already suffered through a ton of boring ball, hard to get excited about a few more seasons of it.

I'm not putting all my eggs into the 2013 Draft basket though... I'm merely acquiring young, cheap assets and adding soon to be expiring contracts

Ideally you stockpile young cheap "potential" talent, future first round picks and have a couple of reasonably large expirings...

A young cheap player with potential + a future first round pick + a large expiring contract is an attractive trade package IMO

Right now we have some youth and no future picks to deal...but we do have raw cap space.

What free agents can we sign this off-season that will really make a difference long term to this ballclub?

Are the free agents we sign better for the franchise than a soon to be expiring contract and a pick in this Draft?

I'll happily take 3, 4, 5 first round picks in this Draft and soon to be expiring contracts... then hope to hit the jackpot with 1 or 2 picks immediately

Then next off-season we have plenty of cap space to add to a core of Drummond, Monroe, Knight and those 2 kids... as opposed to be Drummond, Monroe, Knight and 1 kid

It doesn't seem like much of a difference... but right now we're not really viewed as an "up and coming" kinda team... we're not really anything.

We could change that perception in one season... with a bunch of young guys that always play hard and compete to the death but lose due to "inexperience"...

A 20-30 win season likely puts us in the running for another quality Lotto pick... and we'd still have over $25 mil in cap space!

We've got to play the long game... short term answers will see us capped out in mediocre-ville within 3 years IMO

So I view it as: suffer one more terrible season but do it the "right way"... play the kids and see what happens!

Then hope to spend big money adding to a more "promising" core of players

OR we can play it safe: Use our own picks, sign some reasonabe players and then be stuck in mediocre-ville for a while... hoping Drummond and Monroe can carry the reasonable players around them to the promise land

I'd just amenisty him. If we couldn't find a trade, I'd pray someone will claim him for a mill or 2. I could see a team like Miami or another contender taking a cheap flyer on him. He can be decent in limited minutes plus bigs are very valueable and in high demand. Even garbage ones.
