OT: Realgm Chat Room

Post#1 » by ReturnofMVP3 » Thu Jun 6, 2013 2:24 pm

Spawning off the old realgm thread I noticed some people saying a chat room would be cool to have back here. I realize that the admins here have said in the past that it may take away from the forums to have back but it was brought up by some users to get one for special events. I think this may be a good idea. The forums typically die on draft night or big games due to huge overloads. A chat room would fix that and we could all communicate in the moment. So I was thinking we could ask the admins to set one up for the finals or maybe draft night since the finals start tonight. I realize I could ask this on the forum discussion board and will be but first we need to show interest otherwise the admins won't do it. People read here much more than the forum discussion board so i thought I'd make a poll here.

Thanks in advance for your feedback and votes.

Not only the forums do die during big events, it becomes almost useless to post since as soon as you've sent your message there are 2 new pages on the thread already. It makes it really hard to have an interesting conversation.

I would definitely support a chat room. Could be interesting, but there'd have to be a way to prevent spammers, etc.

Maybe post this in the Suggestion forum to get Howard's thoughts?

Howard and the admins will get something in the suggestion board soon. I just don't want to get turned away due to lack of user support. Typically things are done faster if the users make a rumbling. With the general board being the most active I decided to start here. That way I can give the admins serious reason to consider. So far looks like it is wanted.

Only users with a certain number of posts (500, 1000) could access the chat.

That works to an extent, I guess. But the chat room would be pointless if the only messages being posted were "wow", "hi", "damn", and just one word reactions. Maybe add a character minimum?

They make their money off ads..chatroom means less page views meaning less ad revenue. Its in their best interest to focus discussion on the boards

The fact is, it's a great idea that many would enjoy. But any of yall that have watched a game on a stream site with a chat know what can go down. Ish can get outta control.

Would need 24/7 moderation for chat alone. It would be a great experience to BS real time with RealGMers during a game, but I can also see why the site admins would not want to implement such a feature. It's a double edged sword IMO.

There's already twitter for instant reactions

I like realgm for more thoughtful posts and a chatroom isn't going to provide that. And coding it would be a lot of work that the admins may not be willing to provide

I think that special events can get moderated pretty easy since mods are fans too. Not like they wouldn't watch the draft, playoff or finals. I don't think we should really care about things getting out of hand. It takes that sort of nonsense away from the forums then.

it'd be pretty difficult, wouldn't it? how fast do the threads go? and then think of that in chat.....

whatever espn uses for the daily dime would probably work, but that's all i can think of.

Certain user levels could have access to reduce over flow and if ESPN can make it work I'm sure we could do it here too. It's been said we had one here before so I don't think it's out of the realm

True, but how many people are going to respond to random users during the games/events? Even if you hashtagged say "#RealGM" after your tweet, I doubt many people want to search the tag and then respond. Even the responding back and forth and including more than 2 people in a Twitter back-and-forth convo is difficult. Besides, some people don't even like Twitter that post on RealGM.

Having a chatroom open for a couple hours on special occasions isn't taking away from anything. People can still choose to reply in a thread if they desire.

Sign me on this. Although i haven't chat in years (other than facebook, viber, skype, of course) chats are generally fun, especially during games. Also, we could have chat rooms on interesting topics. My english still needs a little fine-tuning anyway, it would be great practice.
