Diamonds in the Rough

Post#1 » by ComboGuardCity » Thu Jun 6, 2013 3:56 am

Most likely we won't find our supporting cast through free agency. However, I anticipate Joe to be very active trading to save his job. Who are some players that have just have not had the opportunity that you think potentially can be great players for us? These guys most likely are still pretty young and are on a team that won't be able to give them the opportunity to shine the next couple of years.

For Me:

1. Tony Wroten

Huge PG/Off the charts athletcism. Stuck behind Conley & Bayless (If he resigns).

2. Chris Singleton
An excellent defender on a dysfunctional wizards team. Lost minutes last year. The Wizards are looking at drafting Porter so the writing is on the wall for Singleton. If he can focus on being a 3&D guy, he can be an excellent asset moving forward.

SG Alec Burks - Utah Jazz.

If we indeed draft a PG, I want to trade Knight to the Jazz for Burks and a pick (#21?).
If we don't draft either a PG or SG, we could trade Singer/#37 for Burks.

Thomas Robinson. Landing in Sacramento is a career death sentence for anyone. He was benched on a hands down lottery team, opposed to letting him play, develop, and get a feel for the pro game.

He gets traded to Houston, who's 4 spot is always a stretch 4. He's just not a fit with that specific style they're running there. Morey didn't trade for him because he was a fit, but because it was an unbelievable deal thanks to the cheap Maloof morons trying to save a little change on their way out. There's a thread on the topic, so I'm not going to elaborate as to why he fits.

Also on the Sacramento, Tyreke Evans could be a "diamond in the rough". I'm not as high on him as some people. But, he certainly has the physical talent.

T Rob had issues adjusting, but im sure playing on a team with Demarcus will do that. Along w the team being in turmoil and wondering if they're going to seattle or not played a part as a team atleast subconsciously.

He'd have minimal pressure here because Joe made the right draft picks to solidify 2 starting big men, so he can come along slowly and maybe eventually trade Monroe like so many fans want

Yeah Burks will have plenty of opportunities next year, especially if the Jazz go after a PG in the draft.

Dumars should bring back Nazr Mohammed. He's only 35, still plenty of upside left in him.

Joe used to go after players that had bounced around a little but had yet to find a home in the NBA...

Joe gave them a home and watched them "blossom at the right time"

Billups and Big Ben fit that mold :-)

I'll take a look at the free agent list and see what I can come up with... a guy that stands out is Dorell Wright (there is a thread on him somewhere).

Bounced around a little, yet to really find that place to call home but certainly has some tools we could use and might be capable of "breaking out" if he was given a role and consistent minutes each and every night.

I like some of the OP's ideas, we don't have much to offer in a trade. Singler? Jerebko? Those guys aint worth much in the open market. For instance, I like the Wroten idea, but Wroten was an upside pick whom they were expecting would take a couple of years to develop. They've got him locked up for peanuts for three more years, so you think they'd want to hang on to him and see what they got. Burks is a 6'6 21 year old, with two more years on his rook deal. Not going anywhere, not for what we have to offer.

I think Pharaoh's right, we'd have to look to the FA market. Thing about diamonds in the rough is that they're deeply hidden in the rough and everyone's out scouring for them...if you can see them, so can every other team.
After a quick glance at the FA list for this year, here are a couple of names that might be undervalued and worth rolling the dice on:
Roddy Beaubois
DJ Augustin
Nolan Smith
Martell Webster
Reggie Williams
Qunicy Miller
A-F Aminu
Cole Aldrich

There are a lot of players out there in the wrong situation being misused or underused.

Eric Bledsoe could be a big time player in a bigger role.

Jimmy Butler could be a great player in a bigger role as well.

Chase Budinger (oh the irony) could not only be a good player but a fantastic fit next to Drummond and Monroe.

Ed Davis was pretty decent until he got traded to Memphis.

Jeff Green could be great in the right situation.

and Lastly Anthony Randolph could be decent given a role and minutes.

Guys that stuck out within the last few posts:

SG Reggie Williams -- Shooter who can also help run the offense. Stuckey with a shot. Injuries are a concern
SF Chase Budinger -- Athletic shooter who can also play decent D. Injuries are a concern
PF Anthony Randolph -- Athletic PF who would bring a new dimension to the frontcourt. Concern = mentality

Good post, I had Butler/Green/Davis in mind as well. I'd add Alfarouq Aminu to the list as well.

I'd like to pursue Jerryd Bayless. At the very least I think he could be a solid 3rd guard and floor spacer.

I don't think these guys are in the rough by any means

Bledsoe - It seems the Clippers are very high on him and 1) aren't going to think about moving him until CP3 has resigned and 2) if they do move him they expect to use him as a chip to get something bigger than we can offer.

Butler - I would not be surprised to see Deng moved to free up a spot for Butler, even if he's not Chicago is very close to the lux tax line and Butler is a rotation piece locked up to a cheap deal.

Budinger- hasn't been able to stay on the court

Ed Davis- Memphis may see him as the piece that lets them move Z-Bo's contract. Either way he's the main chip they got from Rudy Gay

Jeff Green - Boston loves themselves some Jeff Green

I'd explore acquiring Danny Granger. I'm sure we can get him cheap if we take on most of the salary.

Aminu immediately jumped to my mind as well. For one, he's still only 22 years old, so he fits perfectly with our young core. Secondly, he's an actual UFA who we could simply sign outright (no need to trade assets or worry about being matched on a RFA). Thirdly, he fills a glaring hole at SF. Lastly (and most importantly), as others have mentioned, Dumars has a track record of acquiring former lottery picks who for whatever reason haven't blossomed yet (Corliss, Rip, Chauncey, etc.). Add it all up and I think he's a likely target (and a smart one at that).

By the way, aside from the UFA / RFA difference, a lot of the same reasons I could see Dumars going after Aminu which I just listed also apply to Gerald Henderson. Don't know if he counts as a "diamond in the rough," but he certainly fits the profile of a Joe Dumars signing.

I believe Wright will be a good pick up where ever he goes.
