Nuggets not bringing back Karl
I don't think Karl is the greatest coach in the world but he probably the best coach on the market now.. Who here would like to see Karl on the sidelines in Det?? I would, ESPECIALLY over the likes of Cheeks or McMillan!!

I don't follow the Nugz closely, so what am I missing here? Why would they not bring back Karl?

Karl is by far the best choice on the market for a rebuilding team such as ours.

Re: Nuggets not bringing back Karl
Either he takes a year off and does tv or weighs his options in general but he'd be the perfect fit here and would get the most out of his team.
..Then we let him go in 4 years because he cant take us to the finals.

Speaking as a Blazers fan and a secondary fan of the Pistons, I'd take Karl any
day of the week over Cheeks and Nate.

He's not considered an "elite" coach by the FO. Plus they lost Masai, their former GM who got Karl in the first place. I would love to take him over the current picks.ajaX82 wrote:I don't follow the Nugz closely, so what am I missing here? Why would they not bring back Karl?

I doubt he would have any interest in coaching the Pistons.

What are the chances Toronto now fires Casey and goes after Karl?

Karl is the Marty Schottenheimer of the NBA. he'll get you in the playoffs, but thats about it. I think hes still the only coach in NBA history to have the #1 seed and lose to the #8 seed.

^ Gregg Popovich says hello (vs. Memphis in 2011).
But seriously, Karl turned Seattle into a contender (1996 Finals) and took both the Bucks and the Nuggets to the Conference Finals (2001 and 2009). In short, he's been highly successful everywhere he's gone, he's just never reached the mountain top; more importantly, he's got a great track record of developing young players and teams (and look how much he got out of Denver after the Melo trade, when he didn't have a superstar anymore). How different is his history now from Larry Brown's when we hired him in 2003?
Whether or not he wants to come here is another matter, especially with teams like Memphis and the Clips sniffing around, but Dumars must do his due diligence and pursue him.

Some teams with coaching vacancies will make a run at G. Karl. Per league source, #pistons not one of them because they're "close" on hire.

yeah, thats why I said I think. the ole memory isnt what it used to be I guess.

Im not really saying I dont want him. Karls probably the best available option for a rebuilding team as a 3 year stop-gap, but I dont think hed be a good long term option if we plan to ever contend.
LBs history isnt much different, but he was regarded as a great basketball mind at the time we hired him. Karls regarded as a good bball coach. he has had some playoff success, but no more than any average coach could have had with the talent he had to work with in Seattle and Milwaukee. hes been solid in Denver and probably even overachieved the CF year (Chauncey?) but the fact that theyre letting him go tells me they dont think he can get them to the next level, which his track record backs up. yeah hes had 2 CFs and 1 NBA Finals appearances, but hes also had 14 First round exits.

if we hire cheeks, Joe's dead to me... I understand Cheeks is a nice guy, but these next couple seasons are critical seasons where IMO Drummond could be developed into one of the next wave of great players and I don't trust a average-at-best re-tread like Mo.

Dumars hates the fans, doesn't he? Karl might not be a perfect fit, but he's unquestionably a better candidate than Cheeks or McMillan. I think it's a $$$ issue at this point. No other truly viable reason why they've done nothing but interview the league's bottom barrel candidates.

I think Karl got far with the talent that he's had. He made it to the finals with Payton and Kemp, two top 20 players at the time. He made it to the conference finals with Anthony and Billups. Note, that's as far as Anthony has ever been in the playoffs, despite playing in the east the last three seasons, with a much deeper team.
As for why the Nuggets are letting him go, sometimes teams feel they need a change of the guard, a new voice. Karl just won COTY, and was unfortunate enough to run into an incredibly hot shooting Warriors. It happens.
I don't love Karl, but I think he's done well with the players available to him. The fact that Denver did so well despite rotation players constantly being injured is encouraging.
Also, if Dumars wasn't a moron and got Karl, he could lobby for a Wilson Chandler trade.

A lot of good coach's are becoming available, and the Pistons are acting like Cheeks/McMillan are the top 2 coach's on their big board the way they are showing no interest in any of them.

I'm almost certain the problem lies with Gores not wanting to pay an upper tier coach.
He's playing the broke card.

I tend to agree, except.

This is an observation, not a report. But with Denver paying Karl's salary this year, it makes him that much more attractive of a candidate
If it were just money, I'd think Karl would be Gores' #1 choice because you get the 1st yr free.
I like Karl better than the alternatives, but in reality his playoff record over the last decade isn't any better than McMillan's or Cheeks. Plus he's got health issues. I'm not too upset that they aren't looking at Karl. I'm more upset at the fact they are closing in on a hire and not even looking at Hollins after all this time of "doing their due diligence". They had time to give out a hundred courtesy interviews, but now the best candidate on the market becomes available in Hollins and its too late to interview him? Absolute buffoonery
