It is. When coaches are interviewed do they not have to show there offensive and defensive scheme's and how they can first coach the team on and then implement them? How can Kidd seriously have anything in place to even begin being a coach? What does this say about the NBA as a league if a team can just play off of talent and still be competitive?

You would think after seeing what the spurs have done over the years that teams would invest more in systems and development.

Granted hes a respected player around the league especially in that organization, there will still be a barrier he will have to overcome to make that transition fully.

Why should it matter that he was playing for a rival the previous year? If he does end up coaching the Nets he will be giving it his all for the franchise that he spent the most time with and had the most success with as a player...his one year with the Knicks won't mean anything.
So when is this plane going down? I'll ride it til' it hits the ground!

I'm giving it 20 games before they fire him.

Yes, given that almost no time has passed between Kidd's retirement and the hiring. No years spent and added experience gained as an analyst, broadcaster, or sportswriter studying the game from afar--no nothing. And the jury is still out even on Jackson's own coaching performance.

It's important to note that there is often no relationship whatsoever between the quality of a player when he was playing, and the quality of the coach that player goes on to be. There have been some notable disasters even among Hall of Fame players, who just didn't have what it takes to coach. Magic and Isiah, just for starters. In fact, most of the league's best coaches were relative nobodys when they played professionally themselves, and still others never even played pro ball.

Kidd's ability as a great player directly translating like this would be the exception, and not even close to the rule.

Which is why the Nets insist he bolster his bench with high end assistants.

Frank is rumored to be one of them, Larry Brown's name floated originally and some other high end assistants in the league like Tim Grgurich.

Also, I'm not as worried about his experience (he's played 20 years for some great coaches and was basically a player coach most his career) as I am his maturity. One year removed from a DUI which he hasn't been sentenced for is somewhat scary.

Did Mark Jackson have all that prepared?

As for the coach hiring process in general....that is an interesting question. An elite organization like the Lakers hired Mike D'Antoni over Phil Jackson during a short phone call interview. And they employed Mike Brown a season before that in a similar fashion, and both of those guys are more like running jokes in the league.

I don't like comparing coaching versus the Spurs since it's not fair...Pop is more than just a coach and had more power than even Phil Jackson in his coaching prime

But I do agree teams should invest more in systems and development. Kidd will bring defensive accountability in the Nets system and for development Kidd has experience working on one of his own weaknesses (3 point shooting) which could crossover too

I heard that Lawrence Frank is going to be his top assistant and basically 'co-coach' with him.

I think Kidd's experience in the modern NBA makes up for not studying the game in a booth, and compared to most other players Kidd was much more defensive minded which I think will carry over into his coaching.

Odds are stacked against him though

Not confirmed but Frank was planning on taking the year off to be with his wife who I believe has cancer and wanted to be in NJ. So I can see this working out in some modified manner, especially since Kidd lobbied for Frank after he essentially got Scott fired.

But yes, that is going to a priority, to get high end assistants along side him.

Another name that wouldn't surprise me .. Ettore Messina.

BTW.. the Nets are such media whores.
Look for the announcement to be made tomorrow so it can be talked about during the Finals coverage.

Thanks for the info. I had no idea Frank's wife had cancer. I briefly heard a New Jersey beat writer talk about it on the radio so I didn't get the whole scoop.

I think Kidd has a good mind for the game ... but a coaching gig right after retiring as a player?
Too soon.
I suppose that's what two Finals appearances will do for you.

I love this move. I'll take an unproven J-Kidd as my coach over some chicken **** move like hiring some proven mediocre coach.

Even though I was really pissed yesterday about this whole ordeal (and I'm still a bit peeved), I've always said that if they get Messina, I'd be satisfied with the staff.

Will he come back to play also? I hope he becomes the first player-coach in a long time.
