I've always wondered , for a guy like Kidd who just spend 20 years in the NBA , probably sees the floor and knows the game as well as anyone, is it really that hard to make the jump into coaching?

In his years in the NBA he's probably had 10 different coaches, tons of assistant coaches, he's seen it all.

I'm not saying he's going to be a great coach right off the bat , but I feel like it's more doable than people would think.

I look at it as a compliment to J-Kidd. It's not like they hired Stephon Marbury, if you can't acknowledge that Kidd is one of the smartest players to play the game then I don't know what to say.

Could Kidd still decide in the middle of the season and suit up? Would be awesome to have a player-coach in the NBA.

It is not up to them what coach will sign with them.

Shaw has wanted LAC from the beginning and will sign there most likely

Better roster
Better weather
Family there
Ties to the city

I think they knew Shaw was going to pick LAC and they are doing this as quickly as they can to make it look like Kidd was their guy and they didn't get dumped for the Clippers. Though I am hearing Kidd has had this in mind for some time.

But otherwise Shaw is the only coach I would want over Kidd.
Not Karl as his playoff record is awful
Not Hollins as he a hard a$$ and a control freak and offensively challenged as was Avery and PJC

It's a huge risk hiring a coach with no official coaching experience when you're in win now mode, though.

I think they're trying to replicate the Mark Jackson success. I dont think Jackson had any coaching experience, did he?

The nets need work. They need to work through trades. They cant make trades because they have bad contracts. The nets are stuck. Prokorov wins.

Nor did Bird or Rivers.

Thus they had to take a gamble here. Their coach will be their single biggest free agent signing this summer.

Too soon.
I suppose that's what two Finals appearances will do for you.

So what do you suggest for the guy? Take a year off at the beach and then he'll be ready for coaching? Let's face it he's been coaching for the ladder of his career. Most point guards make great coaches and this won't be any different.

What does being a smart player have to do with any of this. Unless you have talked basketball with Kidd you also have no idea. In sports I believe this might be the first time in history of all sports anyone has become a coach of a professional team without ever having previously coached a game. It's absolutely unprecedented.

Do I have issues? How about all the kids at SJHS and even Cal when he re-appeared very infrequently at scheduled events and talked down to kids and was extremely impatient?

Whats to respect? Its easy to say that from the context of a fan, but what do you really know about the guy? I've had to work with him, and unless in the past 5 years he's done a complete 180, I find him to be an entirely disgusting human being, top to bottom. And that was even before his wife issues.

Good luck to BKN. I hope somehow they can be successful while Kidd isn't.

That's the biggest issue. Sure, Kidd is going to get a different level of respect from players. But, the daily grind of being a head coach is MUCH different than the grind of being a player.

For a team that is expected to win now, a veteran coach is the better option. Kidd would have been a better choice for a team that's building, like the Bobcats or Suns.

I think this is a huge mistake from Nets!

Kidd might have been terrific as a player in his heydays but as coach and at this time (immediately after retirement)..I am not sure!

Anyway, wait and watch!!!

didn't kidd win some sportsmanship award the last two yrs?
Warspite:

Prince + filler for Kobe Bryant
To be honest the way Prince has played and with Kobes injury/age/mileage Im not sure I would do that deal either. Still Prince is more important and he wins the head to head battles with Kobe.

I'm not a fan of his personality/character either, but I almost think that's what has helped him get where he is. He's rather ruthless, me first and conniving, but sometimes the those people are the most successful.

The real worry for me is his character issues. One year removed from a DWI that he hasn't been sentenced for yet, I don't believe, is not good. I'm not going to call him an alcoholic but I hope he does not drink anymore at all.
