Maybe if it wasn't a fictitious Dinosaur.

Guys, I'm not really into the Husky either but it doesn't really matter. We're over thinking things here because our team stinks. Is the name 'Bulls' really that great? How about Nuggets or Wizards or Kings or Nets or Bobcats? If you ask me, which you didn't, those names all kind of suck . On the other hand Heat is a pretty great name as is Celtics. So there goes that point, guys. Right out the Godammned window. You see what I'm saying though...

Yeah, but those logos all lend themselves to better logos than the Raptors. Our team name is for a bloody dinosaur. And a feathered one at that. There is no way to make a dinosaur look good in a logo - the best logos are crisp, clean, bold, and simple. If you oversimplify a dinosaur, it looks cartoonish. If you go too detailed, it doesn't look like a logo, plus will get dated too quickly.

All those other teams' mascots (maybe except the nuggets) lend themselves to infinitely more possibilities. Teams like the wizards and bobcats could be doing so much more with their mascot but usually choose to make them look ugly.

In fact, I think I agree with you, which is why I think something like the Loyalists would be much better - the name doesn't roll off the tongue, but it could make for a more classic, elegant logo than the purple dino.

What about Toronto Arrows, modeled after the Avro Arrow, which was a pinnacle of Canada's 20th century achievements. Its specific time in history means a lot of possibilities re: time period font, motive, etc. Not to mention, fighter jets are always badass. Introducing this as a new team name would fit in well with the team's efforts to reach out more broadly to the rest of Canada.

Or what about references to Ontario's and Canada's defence from the US in the war of 1812? Toronto Militia or Toronto Loyalists. Logos of people from a specific time period are also pretty classic (pirates, senators, patriots, etc.) as long as they don't go cartoony.

But basically:

Raptors < Huskies < Anything else.

You're kidding right.

Raptors are a way better name than ANYTHING you suggest.

The name isn't the problem. its everything else that is associated with the name.

I don't understand the obsession with the name of a friggin sports team needing some sort of meaning to it that's related to the city. Why can't a name just sound good and have a great logo + jerseys?

Nobody has tried a 3rd approach. Instead of sticking with the dinosaur, or changing it to Huskies, you can simply keep the name and change the logo to a bird of prey. Make it a tough looking bird and distinguish it from the Hawks.

The snout looks like a sagging breast to the point where I'm convinced it's intentional. Well done.

This is exactly it. There is no need for association with the city. This is akin to choosing a tattoo because "this circle signifies love, and this swirl signifies eternity". These people are then stuck explaining their choice to everyone that see the tattoo, and realize shortly that their associations are crap.

A tattoo is art. It is supposed to look good. That's it. The meaning stuff is bull. It doesn't need to mean anything if it's a beautiful piece.

Same with a name. There is no need for an association. A cool name is enough. Something that sounds nice phonetically, and can be shortened easily.

Toronto Raptors fits the bill.

The Toronto Arrows? Give me a break.

Give it up with this "Huskies" crap.

And the logo is pretty cheese bro.
On Gerald Henderson vs Derozan:
"Yes. Hendo is quite a bit better than DeMar.
So yes, I do believe he's currently the better player and do project that will continue to be in the future. I would also take Turner over DD."

I'd be interested to find out if this divide between "Huskies" and "Raptors" is age related. In other words, if people on this board grew up with "Raptors", they are defending it, while older people with no particular tie to the name are in favour of "Huskies".

I'm in the latter camp. "Raptors" is a cartoonish name. Always has been. Always will be.

People need to get real. This name existed more half a decade ago and lasted for 60 games.

are you only saying this because of the first jerseys that the team had?

Because the word raptor has nothing to do with a cartoon otherthan those terrible jerseys

Older in what sense?

It seems to me that the younger posters (teens) are in favour of Huskies, while the older posters are in favour of the Raptors remaining - though I only extrapolate from the user's join date. (I suspect that my method of identifying posters may be more valid than yours which was derived from your own experience only.)

Unless older signifies 40 and above, in which case, shouldn't they have more things to worry about than how "****" the Raptors name is?

I don't see how a join date to a forum can identify someone age. Just sayin'.

Toronto Raccoons!
http://www.thegridto.com/city/local-new ... marauders/

There’s no official city count, but scientists with the Ministry of Natural Resources estimate that there could be as many as 100 raccoons per square kilometre living in the city—so many that Toronto has been unofficially dubbed the raccoon capital of the world

Let's continue the trend of horrible team names

I am probably one of the older posters on these forums and here is a previous post that sums up my feelings on the matter:

MLSE should keep the Raptors name and claw, but if MLSE does go for a name change, the Huskies is the last name in the universe they should choose. It is a mark of failure and racism. It is the name of a team from 67 years ago that has no real tradition but rather just one barely played season with a terrible losing record, plus, it was also a "whites only" team from before integration. It would just rebrand the team as suckier looking "junior Timberwolves" failures far worse than anything the Raptors name could portray. As well, since it only has some connotation for local Toronto anachronisms who live in the past, it also slaps in the face and alienates all other Canadian fans. Trying to sell the Huskies as Canada's team would be an abject failure.

It is 2013, not 1946 and time for something new and more appropriate than the Huskies.

I think there could be a correlation there. It might also have to do with how long you've followed the team. I can only speak for myself, but as someone who has followed the team religiously since the inaugural season, I do NOT want to see a name change... ever. "The Raptors" is the team I've followed through thick and thin, and if we do win a championship one day, I would want it to be the Raptors. It'll mean so much more. Winning as any other team name just won't feel the same.

I also don't care for the "we named our team after Jurassic Park" argument. Sure, the movie was big at the time, but the velociraptor existed before the movie and seems to fit the bill for a basketball team: fast, vicious and hunts in a pack.

As for the "it has nothing to do with the city" argument, the same can be said for a lot of the teams. Does Atlanta have a lot of hawks? Are there many wizards in Washington? Do bulls roam around the streets of Chicago (though it was partially named because of it's predominant meatpacking industry - which 10x worse than naming it after the popularity of a movie).

Return to Toronto Raptors
