Who do you want to (ASSISTANT) coach the nets?

Post#1 » by PetroNet » Thu Jun 13, 2013 12:54 pm

Now that Kidd is in, who would you want to be brough on to be his asstant coaches?

For me, it has to be 2 things:

1) someone who doesnt overshadow kidd.

2) someone with a ton of knowledge and experience to help him with the transition to coaching.

for me, it is 2 very obvious names. Frank and Messina.

With Frank, it is someone Kidd knows well, trusts, has HC experience in this league, is super prepared and who can help kidd transitions and maybe even some heavy lifting early without overshadowing him since he never played and isnt a super high profile coach.

With messina, you get a guy who is also a leader of men, can hopefully get this team to play some team oriented offense, and while super experienced, wont overshadow kidd because he hasnt coached in the NBA.

really hoping it isnt someone like larry brown. he woudl overshadow kidd, and it would constantly be "who is really coaching this team"

I think you're on the money there.

Frank - Has a history with the team and Kidd (and Lopez). He has HC experience and won't overshadow him. To me Frank was never meant to be a HC but an amazing assistant coach. I actually thought it was a great move by Boston when they had him working with Doc a few years ago. And Frank is coming back to us now with even more experience and exposure around the league.

Michelle Beadle was talking on the Fan this morning about how much she loved Frank and how much they both loved using the F word, lol.

Messina - To me the biggest thing is he can be our European connection and someone who can help guys like Mirza/Toko/Bogs develop into better players. He will also bring new ideas to the table that I really think Kidd will be open to.

I just want a good big man coach too. Honestly would have been interesting to get Ewing for the job b/c A) he did a great job with Dwight in Orlando B) Lopez and Blatche can be some of the most dangerous big men in the league when clicking, and C) would have been great to stick it to Knicks fans, and I'm sure Ewing would have felt the same since they never hired him.

I think you start with Frank/Messina and add one more quality name. I don't think it has to be someone with a lot of experience either.

Frank/Messina for me. We need an offense that doesn't require athleticism but emphasizes ball movement, the screen and roll, and cutting. On defense, we aren't going to be elite but a good team defensive philosophy can at least stop some of the bleeding we saw this year.

Twist - the interview with Shaw was for a place helping Kidd as an assistant! Would you want that over, say, Messina?

From the time that we started hearing that speculation about Kidd becoming head coach was gaining steam, I've said that if Frank & Messina are assistant coaches, I'll be satisfied with that.

My disapproval for hiring Kidd has waned a lot in the last day or so. I really hope it succeeds because it would absolutely suck if we fire our franchise's best player right after he retires.

If we got Frank and Messina, I think that'd be the best combination you can get given the circumstances.

Let Frank influence the defense and Messina the offense and I think things will be pretty good.

no, absolutely not. for the reason i stated above. i dont want anyone as an assitant who will overshadow kidd or who will cause people to say he should be the head coach or is really calling the shots. plus, shaw will be looking to bolt first chance he gets anyhow.

Saw today Hollins making noises about being willing to be an assistant. What about Hollins as lead assistant while he excels in the defensive side of the game and Messina there as well to help with the offensive side of coaching and a Euro view maybe to give a different takes on things.

This is never happening though lol

I fully expect Frank to be lead assistant with a few more lower profile but experienced coaches in there as well.

I think they should get as many head coaches ex head coaches I should say. Lawrence Frank, Alvin Gentry if he doesnt get hired, Nate if he doesn't get hired. They should also bring over Prokys guy in Russia an an assistant.
I would pick up every guy who was trying to be a head coach and didn't get the jobs because there are only a few spots available.

After reading all of those articles about Hollins, I doubt that he'd be a willing assistant to anyone.

He's got the type of personality where it's his way or no way. The last time he was an assistant was under Scott Skiles. I can see why those two got along.

I want three different "types" of assistants here.

1) Veteran like Frank who has been long-time assistant, 2-time HC, hard worker, good communicator. Good rapport with Kidd.

2) Another long-time assistant, one who is a great assistant but no aspirations to be a HC EVER. He needs to be the drill sargeant, the "dog" that Kidd can seek out to the players whenever he needs a drill done. And this one must be able to "bark", because IMO, Kidd and Frank are both quiet leader types.

3). Young assistant, hot-shot, that is heavy into analytics and new trends in basketball analysis. I want someone that can grow along with Kidd. I want the best basketball mind (Kidd), and another of similar age if not younger who will take this team into the new age of basketball analysis in an area that Kidd is not familiar with.

Just to be clear, ALL of Avery's team is gone, right? No Mario Elie, Popeye Jones, or Doug Overton?

They might be candidates for assistant coach slots, but yes, they are no longer officially with us.

I believe Lawrence Frank will be Kidds main assistant, second in command.

During the interview on YES Frank is the only name mentioned by Billy King and when it is a Lawrence Frank graphic was immediately put up with his Nets coaching history. Frank is the perfect choice IMO.

Considering how much Lawrence Frank was mentioned during the presser, there are definitely some talks going on with him. Looks like there is a good chance he ends up here, as long as its not much of a problem with his wife's illness.

Does anybody actually believe Kidd is making the assistant coaching decisions on his own ?

I don't.

Alan Hahn on ESPN NY Radio is reporting Nets have a $2M a year offer on the table for Lawrence Frank as an assistant coach/associate head coach.

Can't have too many former HCs on the staff. There is such as thing as having too many chefs in the kitchen.
