Will we get another pick in the first round?

Post#1 » by theBigLip » Fri Jun 14, 2013 3:25 pm

Just curious if anyone thinks we can get another pick in the first round.

Dallas has been rather open that they would like to move their pick at #13.

Boston, Chicago, Brooklyn and New York are also all in luxury tax situations and not in need of a rookie. So that would be #16, 20, 22, and 24.

A second pick could get us another scorer. I think Ledo would be a great pickup with one of those latter picks.

I want to.

I'd like to target guys like Tony Mitchell or Giannis

Will we? Doubt Dumars does anything more than he HAS to....so no.

I have a strong feeling that Joe won't look to acquire another 1st. I believe with his job being on the line (playoff or bust) he won't be that interested in bringing in a lot more youth than what we already have and focus more on adding veterans rather than rookies.

With that said, I would love to trade for Marion/13.

Marion might be enough of a vet presence to do get the pick.

I think Joe will trade for another one if the price is low and there's a player in that pick's range that he likes.

But, this team is so young, and he wants to "win now", so it won't be his top priority to acquire more young players that require development. He's going to be looking for vets that can speed up the rebuild, regardless of whether that will work or not.

Good points. I wonder how much leeway Joe has to work a plan vs "win now". I hope Gores has a bit more vision and patience - I'd rather get a couple of solid young wings that can all develop with Monroe and Drummond. Another pick this year could help.

Right, Dumars has not ever bought a pick yet, so I am thinking he won't be doing that this year either.

Couldn't resist. The ping pong balls should now be retired as we'll be a playoff team and I needed something, at least until draft time :-)

I don't think we'll acquire another 1st rounder...It would be nice to pick McCullum with the 13th pick though...

From Vince Ellis:

: The #Pistons haven't had any workouts for the eight pick yet. Starts next week. Only confirmed workout is Plumlee on June 21st.

We can't possibly be considering Plumlee @ 8 but he's most likely a first round pick. Dumars must be considering getting another 1st or trading down imo.

Plumlee seems like a mid to late first rounder, so maybe we are looking for another pick. I can't imagine us getting rid of #8 - there will be useful players for us to get that can start for us and I couldn't imagine us getting much for the pick anyway.

I think getting another first to get a back up big man is a great idea, it will be a lot cheaper than signing one plus, you will probably get a better player considering Kwame Brown gets like $4-5 million.

Great idea in theory, but Dumars has never pulled the trigger before, even with pieces to move. So yeah, I'm skeptical until I see something.

Would definitely be interested in seeing what kind of value Stuckey could bring on draft week

Honestly I'm not even sure what we'll do with the pick we have. Its an unimpressive draft and unless they can be had on the cheap I don't really see the point.

A semi-tangent, but it's curious that so many people believe Joe's job is in jeopardy and he has to win now. How legit is that? A large portion of the fan base seems to feel that way, but there has been VERY little coming from Gores camp. Are we reading too much into Phil, who evidently did very little. Is this our longtime bias due to the franchises decline following our run of success?

I dunno, it certainly could be true...but I'm not gonna be too quick to say Joe can't afford another rookie while trying to make the playoffs. Gores may want to win...but I'm not so sure he isn't also capable of taking a long-term outlook and recognizing the best way to achieve sustained success. And we still have the ability to add vets through FA and/or trade.

That doesn't mean Gores won't come out again and claim we should be a playoff team. But like...what else would you want your owner to say "Sorry fans, we're gonna suck this year." "This is a transition year." "Our product might be terrible this year, but pls come out and support us because in 2 more yrs it will be worth it."

I'm not sure Dumars can do ANYTHING to get fired at this point....

Gores said when he bought the team he was giving Joe 3 years to turn it around. Also last season he was expecting playoffs, and Gores has said he can be impatient man.

Well, I'm not really sure what he saw last year that he interpreted as progress.

Drummond is exciting but we certainly weren't any better last year than the year before that or that.

Its what leads me to believe they've got a LOT invested in this offseason in terms of hope for the franchise. And that's a scary thought.

I think you're reading way too much into one confirmed workout. He'll likely be working against somebody like Zeller.

McCollum was supposedly going to have a workout this week, but hasn't happened yet. Maybe it got pushed back so Cheeks could be there.
