Not exactly a championship team but more of a setup for 2014.

So we role out a high turnover back court no shooters and not much offense? And I'm sure brand goes to a contender maybe the spurs

You and cs hauser both have good points because Ellis probably isn't the best fit and will cut too much into our cap space.
My point is that we could lock up core players in their prime that would give us some flexibility in 2014. Ellis can move to SG and Iggy to SF if a star PG becomes available in 2014.
A possible solution to the problem you mention is drafting MCW because he is a playmaker/defender with size who could defend SGs and make up for Ellis' lack of PG skills.
Bottom line is that Ellis and Iggy will probably be two of the best FAs available after D12 and CP3 are gone if Cuban wants to load up now. cs hauser is right though, we would virtually be trading Marion for Ellis or Iggy if we go that route.

Mayo can't since he opted out. DC or Roddy would have to be sign and trades.

I'd rather use our cap as salary dumps foe teams willing to move assets ie biedrins or ben gordon than sign long term contracts to average player

Then substitute Jennings for Ellis and we are more balanced. I just don't want to become another jumpshooting team...I like the way Ellis can get to the basket/foul line.

But my overall point is to get our 3rd and 4th best players in line for one season to play with Dirk and then go after the big FA in the 2014 offseason who will most likely be a scorer. I think a Dirk/Ellis/Iggy partial core would be attractive to a star FA.

If we completely reload from scratch in 2014 it will probably take at least a year to gel...a year we don't have to waste with an aging Dirk.

Assume CP3 is gone.

Best case scenario for us:
Marion opt out and re-sign with us.
Cunningham traded for a late first.
Crowder traded for a late first.
Buy another late first.
We draft players who won't stay with us this offseason, e.g. C - Rudy Gorbert / PG - Dennis Schroeder / PF - Giannis Adetokoubo / SG - Sergey Karasev.
Mavericks sign Dwight Howard and Monta Ellis.
Brandan Wright re-signs with us.
We sign a cheap 2-way player at 2, e.g. Chuancey Billups.
Draft a speedy PG at 44, e.g. Myck Kabongo.
Filling the roster with veteran minimum specialists.

C - Dwight Howard / Bernard James / Greg Oden
PF - Dirk Nowitzki / Brandan Wright
SF - Shawn Marion / Stephen Jackson
SG - Monta Ellis / Vince Carter / Anthony Morrow
PG - Chuancey Billups / Mike James / Myck Kabongo

Next season, we catch another big fish in Kobe Bryant and sign all first rounders.

C - Dwight Howard / Greg Oden / Rudy Gorbert
PF - Dirk Nowitzki / Brandan Wright / Giannis Adetokoubo
SF - Shawn Marion / Stephen Jackson / LeBryan Nash
SG - Kobe Bryant / Vince Carter / Sergey Karasev
PG - Monta Ellis / Dennis Schroeder / Myck Kabongo

Yeah, no offense Darren, but I lol'd too.

1)
Kobe will retire a Laker.

2)
Why do we want Mr. Chucker Monta Ellis? It'll be like mini-me Jerry Stackhouse.

3)
I'm getting a bit depressed with all this news of Harden and other Rockets players recruiting Dwight over the phone. This is an intriguing situation for Dwight considering he gets to play with a young, fast-paced team that can surround him with shooter like Orlando did. They will likely trend upwards in the coming seasons. If he stays in LA he can make the most money but he has to live up to big expectations while still being in the shadows of an aging Lakers legend. As for us, just being realistic, he has to come to a team where a lot of the core guys are aging and there isn't really a strong, young nucleus like in Houston.
I want the Mavs to get a big free agent in the off season but realistically the argument for the other team just seems more compelling. We can really only hope for the best but I don't think we can say we're surprised if we come up empty-handed again.

4)
Billups isn't really a great impact player anymore. He's pretty much Jason Kidd now. Over the past two seasons he's had 360 FGA ... 215 were three-pointers (60%). At least when Kidd was an old, spot-up 3-point shooter he still managed to rebound decently and get his hands on some loose balls.

Indeed, I am not high on Monta Ellis. But assume CP3 is gone, I like him more than Brandan Jennings and other available PG. As Dirk and D12 mentioned that they want Monta Ellis, he's the logical man to recruit D12. Then, we can build around big 4 (D12, Dirk, Monta, Big Fish, MLE) together with a couple of first round talents (Wright, Euro draftee. That's the compromise between retooling and rebuilding. As the Finals shown us, the league is no longer equal for all. It's built for the super team. Why not being one of those teams? I do not like Kobe in particular. But I remember Mark Cuban and Dirk mentioned about playing with Kobe a year or 2 ago. I can see Kobe not wanting to me in any rebuilding process. He can be a nice fit. (There ain't any big fish next offseason unless Cavs lose their mind to make Kyle Irving unrestricted FA) Billups is not the same but a fit. We need a leader who's very much clutch. And the team with Monta Ellis needs a floormanager next to him. Billups can be the best for our available price tag - veteran minimum.

By the way, I don't think D12's first destination is Houston. For what you have mentioned, Hawks is a perfect fit for him, with or without CP3.

Dwight ain't going to the Hawks.

Atlanta is his hometown and I don't think he has ever expressed any desire to play there.

You realize none of those guys make any sense as longterm starters here right? Jack is a great backup but would be a mediocre starter. KMart is a scorer who doesnt do anything else to help which is why he put up big stats for terrible teams prior to going to OKC which correctly reduced his minutes/role. He'd be a worse version of JET. Landry is a decent player, but he's only a PF and we already have Dirk and Marion and hopefully resign Wright to play there. Daly is a known dog. I dont mind him as a cheap part of a center rotation but asking him to be a 30+ mpg guy....good luck with all that.

^ The above would be a diaster especially since except for Daly you would have to give out multiyear deals and none of those players are difference makers.

Since CP3 seems unlikely and if the price was right, I'd take a chance on Monta Ellis. It be nice to see him paired with a good coach and not sharing the back court with another undersized scoring guard. If nothing else, he'd make the team fun to watch.

Any news on Paul Milsap? I'd love to have him on the team.

I'm ok with monta Ellis but at what price? 4/36-40 sure but I wouldn't go beyond that and I'd still want monta at the two with a big pg that's more a distributor defender that can nail the three however I don't think that guy exist I wouldn't mind jack or devin on a 3/15 type deal

Monta just declined a 3-yr $36M extension from the Bucks. I'm sure he'll get at least a 4yr-$48M contract in the open market. With CP3 off the table, Monta is clearly the best point guard remaining in the market. Alternatives include Jose Calderon, Tyreke Evans, Brandon Jennings, Jarrett Jack... or another year with 38-yr old Mike James. Pick your poison.

Given those options, I would be cool with paying Collison as a backup and starting him and looking for a starter when one becomes available )o draft one).

Tank this year.

I'd like to tank also but there are still some flexible options to be competitive and keep cap room next summer if dwight stsys in la they have a 100 million pay roll with them prefering to go small I could see a marion for gasol type deal put pau at center next to dirk and resignb james maybe add maxiel on a vet min deal that's a solid front court with vince at the three and wed still have some cap room, free agency really some come before the draft

I don't think Pau and Dirk are a good pairing and he's no spring chicken anyway, I'd rather have hang onto Matrix if that is the case. I'd rather wait a year and try to lure Larry Sanders or Boogie (him making it to FA and signing with Dallas is probably a pipe dream).

Cuban also doesn't seem like the type to tank and that's really unfair to Dirk after these past two seasons. We haven't been great at developing talent anyway. If the 'dry powder' strategy doesn't land CP3 or Howard and couldn't land Williams, I wonder what Cubes and Donnie do? It seems like trade-able assets are the better thing to have these days than cap space. At any rate, it should be a fun off-season.

Return to Dallas Mavericks
