That included two teams behind the Cavs: Toronto at 5 and Detroit at 8. So much so, the teams had arranged a trade after they figured the 7-footer would go to the Cavs.
A source said the Pistons were going to trade the eighth pick and guard Ben Gordon to the Raptors for Toronto's No. 5 pick and guard Jose Calderon.
The Pistons were going to draft Tristan Thompson at 5, while Toronto would have taken Brandon Knight at 8.

Yeah, Detroit loved TT that year as did I (most of this board wanted Biyombo). I think he's better than Knight, but truth be told hindsight Klay Thompson and Kawhi Leonard are the guys we really missed out on.

I was surprised Kawhi dropped so much. I think we would've tried getting him if we dealt Prince sooner (Prince for Caron Butler trade).

Leonard and Knight were my guys for that draft. I'm not sure why Leonard fell like he did. I remember he was being touted as everybody's favorite prospect like Oladipo as a top 5 pick, and there were even reports the Pistons may have given Leonard a promise.

Leonard didn't fall. He was really never viewed as a top 10 pick and this board was not high on him at all.

If we got TT, there's a very realistic chance the Drummond doesn't land in Detroit. It worked out in Detroit's favor.

Thats not true at all.
a few Initial mock drafts had him going to Detroit. I didnt know who he was so I didnt like it
Now i know who he is

People have to remember Klay is playing in a system where all SG's look good. He's a good player but the system helps heeps.

A lot of revionist history going on. If you guys were active in the draft threads from 2011- it was obvious we were targeting bigs. Word was we wanted TT for weeks, Charlotte even traded up because they wanted to draft ahead of us to grab Thompson.
Joe D has been very transparent with his draft picks since Rodney Stuckey, Chad Ford always knows who Joe D is targeting and in 2011 it was Thompson and Biyombo was the consolation prize.

He was getting top 5 buzzright after the combine, then top 10 buzz the week before the draft. The Kings were going to take with the 7th pick until the Maloofs called an audible traded back for Jimmer.

Yeah, because in that scenario Toronto probably wouldn't have ended up with Valanciunas and then they likely would have taken Drummond last year.

Kawhi had a 2 week period where he was viewed as a mid lotto pick. However, before and after that he was being seen as a late lottery pick. He didn't fall- he went in his range.

Again the Kings were going to take Leonard with the 7th pick until the Maloof's audibled, and made them trade back for Jimmer.

Yeah it has never been much of a secret who we liked leading up to draft day and TT was definitely the guy we were targeting.
The board was definitely heavily for Bismack, though I advocated hard for Kawhi I do believe. I'll try a post up to show that some were on board with him

So not to toot my own horn but some people were definitely intrigued by a certain Mr. Leonard...

A real athletic wing guy that plays hard every possession and has a great work ethic. I would hardly call us an energetic, athletic team, so he fits well there. He plays really good D and rebounds exceptionally well...again, things we need. He handles the ball well and can get to the rim too. His major flaws (namely, shooting) is very coach-able and fixable, given his form isn't all jacked up. Bonus: he is young. Not even 20 yet.
Thinking about him on our team, he really would be a Pistons type guy; play D, work hard. And if you are thinking about a compliment to Austin Daye at the 3 spot, he is almost perfect.
Consider me intrigued

Re: Details on the Failed 2011 Draft Day Trade
If i recall correctly
Val, Vesley, Leonard, Bismack, TT, Fareid where all tied to us at #8. Knight was projected at #5 to Toronto. He fell in our lap.

I really wanted Leonard at the time because I didn't think Prince would be back. I think he would have been the pick @ 8 if Knight had been gone too.
I don't know where Pop is getting this revisionist **** from. I don't see anyone here denying big men were considered the #1 priority at the time.

Re: Details on the Failed 2011 Draft Day Trade
I fell in love with Valanciunas that draft. I wanted NOTHING to do with Knight. I was so mad when we picked him I couldn't even enjoy the rest of my BWWs meal.
Just kidding, but I definitely was not happy. I was very much like I am about Knight now, I don't think he's good or that he will be good but I hope I'm wrong. Can't wait for Bwws this upcoming draft either!

i think Faired and Leonard where next on the list, followed by BB. That's if knight, and Val were gone. i don't think the FO wanted anything to do with Kemba.

I was on the Kemba bandwagon that year, although I told you Leonard would be good on the next page. I just didn't realize how good, although I did have him as high as #8 even after his measurements came in.
ChipButty wrote:Leonard's numbers were disappointing/suprising to me. Apparently Jimmer Fredette has more hops. I still like Leonard's game and think he deserves to go top 8-12, but I think I'm ready to move Thompson ahead of him.
Pop posted this 4 days before the draft and Leonard was as high as #5 on Ford's big board
princeofpalace wrote:Chad Ford just updated his bigboard-
1. Kryie Irving
2. Derrick Williams
3. Enes Kanter (rise
4. Knight (fall)
5. Leonard (rise)
6. Jonas V (rise)
7. Tristan Thompson (rise)
8. Kemba Walker (fell)
9. Jan Vesely (fell)
10. Chris Singleton (same)
11. Klay Thompson (fell)
12. Bismack Biyombo (fell)
13. Burks (fell)
14. Harris (rise)
15. Hamilton (rise)
And Ajax, you really shouldn't be tooting your own horn too much...

Back to Leonard, Combo mentioned grabbing him at #8

but he also hated Kemba and liked Darius Morris... a lot....
ComboGuardCity wrote:DX has us taking Darius Morris in the 2nd round. I would be extremely happy if he slides that far! I see the kid as a future all star. He's a true PG too.
Sheed thought Leonard was a possibility 2 days before the draft...

Pete took a break from scouting the Euro's to evaluate the local prospects ....
Piston Pete wrote:IMO, Benson > Faried.
Pop Agreed!
princeofpalace wrote:Yeah, I Prefer Benson or Jajuan Johnson to Faried
Although to be fair to both, Pete did like Vucevic as well, and Pop pretty much nailed our pick as early as March 28th, 2011...
princeofpalace wrote:Brandon Knight is an Eric Gordon type, hes not a PG. He has less court vision than Kemba and less than Stuckey. He is a scorer and at the 2 spot thats fine but hes not a guy Detroit needs and I don't think hes a "must have" type of guy either
That being said, it would not surprise me if Joe drafted Brandon Knight or Alec Burks with the intention to convert them to the PG position, that seems to be his MO.
Pop you should have stopped there! You could have saved 3 months of evaluations and about 500 posts...
