The guards will be coming to a decent squad.

Mitchell if he loses a bit of weight can be among the best rebounders in the nation. Layman seems like he's got a chance at an NBA future at SF if he gets stronger and with a tighter handle.

It's unfortunate they had such terrible ball handlers when Alex Len was on campus.

Dion Wiley, four-star shooting guard, commits to the Terps

"When you watch the kid as much as we’ve watched him, there’s no surprises. I think he’s got a lot more to give than what he’s given so far. He should be a McDonald’s All-American. I think he’s a kid that can be All-Freshman Big Ten."

With Wiley and Trimble now in the fold, the Maryland coaching staff's attention will now likely turn toward forwards and centers to fill the remaining two scholarships available in the 2014 class. Daniels said that starting the group with Wiley and Trimble -- from Washington's top AAU programs in Team Takeover and D.C. Assault, respectively -- is undeniably "huge."

"Those two together are going to make up on the best incoming backcourts in the country next year," Daniels said. "For Maryland to get the best player from Team Takeover and the best player from D.C. Assault is a huge step. When Mark Turgeon got the job, he focused on keeping the local players home. He’s getting it done in a major way. These two guys, pairing them together, it’s a big step. If you look at the incoming backcourt next year, those two guys, wow. You’re going to be pretty impressive."

Terps basketball target Jared Nickens commits after official visit

The future grew even brighter for Coach Mark Turgeon and the Maryland basketball team on Sunday afternoon, when New Jersey swingman Jared Nickens offered his oral commitment to the Terrapins following an official visit to College Park.

From Pennsylvania’s Westtown High, the 6-foot-6 Nickens adds another dangerous three-point shooter to Maryland’s class of 2014, which has already received pledges from Dion Wiley (Potomac) and Romelo Trimble (O’Connell), the top-ranked players in Maryland and Virginia, respectively.

And a group already ranked third nationally by ESPN.com grows even stronger.

Nickens is a 6-6 shooter. With Melo Trimble and Dion Wiley, the #Terps may end up with the best recruiting crop of shooters in the country.

Great to see that the Terps are loading up on snipers! Shooting has been the team's weakest link for awhile.

I hope Mitchell and Cleare are getting in great condition. They and Dodd have some guards and shooters now.

Terps focus on recruiting in Prince George's County basketball

It began with Suitland High School guard Roddy Peters.

At first, Peters appeared to be an integral piece in starting a pipeline with D.C. Assault, a world-class Amateur Athletic Union boys basketball team. Less than a month after committing to the University of Maryland, College Park, two other from his AAU team — Upper Marlboro native Melo Trimble (Bishop O'Connell) and Queen Anne's Damonte Dodd — had either orally pledged to play in a Terps' uniform or officially signed a national letter of intent. Maryland coach Mark Turgeon, it appeared, had his golden ticket into one of the most highly-recruited teams in the country.

And then there was Dion Wiley.

Wiley, though good friends with Peters, Trimble and Dodd from having played against them most of his life, was not a D.C. Assault player. A proud member of Team Takeover, an equally powerful and sought after AAU team, Wiley brought a new common denominator to Mark Turgeon's two most recent recruiting classes: Prince George's County guards.

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Rivals.com 5-Star Damian Prince was at Terps prospect camp but not as a camper. Prince was on campus to support his current Bishop McNamara teammates. TT rolled the tape as he lists Maryland, Florida State and Ohio State as his top three.

Terps commit Wiley lights up Nike Peach Jam

Mark Turgeon has recruited Potomac (Md.) native Dion Wiley because the Terrapins need outside shooters from the high school class of 2014.

And that's what Wiley did this weekend at Peach Jam, Nike's crown jewel of the summer AAU circuit in North Augusta, S.C.

Over the course of five games, Wiley finished 18-of-35 from three-point range, good for 51 percent from behind the arc. Those 18 tied him for the most of any player in the tournament and he finished third in three-point percentage.

"I wasn't surprised," Wiley told CSN by phone Sunday night. "When I get my chances, I'll take them."

Wiley is one of three elite shooters committed to Maryland from the 2014 class. He joins Romelo Trimble (D.C. Assault/Bishop O'Connell) and Jared Nickens (Sports U/Westtown) in a rotation that will test opposing defenses with three legitimate threats from the perimeter.

"Now we need a big," Wiley says, looking ahead to what Maryland could do for the remainder of 2014. "We know that we can do our job outside, but we need a guy inside."

For the Terrapins, that means one of three major targets: Trayvon Reed of Georgia, Chinanu Onuaku of Maryland, or Goodluck Okonoboh of Massachusetts.

Along with the skills he will bring to Maryland in 2014, Wiley's commitment is important for two other reasons for coach Mark Turgeon and his staff.

Wiley is a local talent, and a Top 25 national talent at that, something that has been a focus for this Terps program. Wiley plays for powerhouse Team Takeover (D.C.), which is rivaling D.C. Assault as the preeminent power in the region.

2014 Big 10 football recruiting rankings
http://www.elevenwarriors.com/2013/08/2 ... s-819#more

Maryland currently sits in last place, but that might change next week. Four-star defensive end Jesse Aniebonam is expected to commit to Maryland over Alabama, Clemson, Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and others. The Terps are considered the clear favorite for 247Sports' 102nd overall player in the nation.

Five-star corner Jalen Tabor continues to trend towards Maryland. The Terrapins have quickly turned from dark horse to front-runner for Tabor. Mike Locksley – their ace recruiter – is handing the recruitment of Aniebonam, Tabor, Damian Prince, Brock Ruble and Chris Jones.

Ga. 7-Footer Trayvon Reed will visit #Terps Wednesday and he's not looking to drag things out.

Wizardspride, keep the good news coming!

I'm excited for the Terps' football and basketball programs. Recruiting is looking up.

Jalen Tabor is like a Steffon Diggs on defense. Cream of the crop good. He's a 5-star recruit.

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/r ... bor-115301

Never had heard of Aniebonam, but if he's a lineman picking the Terps over Bama and Clemson, come on man... That's GOOD for Maryland. The main thing that separates Maryland from teams in the SEC is the quality of their linemen. There seems to always be good receivers and defensive backs on the Terps. What they need to crack the top-25 and top-10 rankings are linemen. Aniebonam will be a huge signing.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/footballrecruit ... aywgdIPZB4

Since hoops are my passion, did some digging on the 7 footer, Trayvon Reed. Defensive minded prospect and not a stat stuffer yet. He's a friend of Charles Mitchell and seems to want to commit and almost did days back.

http://www.testudotimes.com/2013/8/16/4 ... o-maryland

After a lot of confusion, it appears that the 2014 center has not officially committed to the Terps

http://terpsrecruiting.blogspot.com/201 ... -reed.html

One of the prime targets on Maryland's board is 7-foot-1, 210-pound Atlanta center Trayvon Reed. TerpsRecruiting recently caught up with Reed, who holds offers from several SEC and ACC schools, including Maryland.

This summer, Reed has split his time running with Under Armour-sponsored Atlanta Xpress and Florida-based and Nike-sponsored Each 1 Teach 1.

Since joining Each 1 Teach 1, Reed has averaged 4.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game on 53% shooting. The team is 8-0 on Nike's EYBL circuit and qualified for the Peach Jam next month since Reed joined the team.

Edsall has Mike Locksley recruiting very well.

Turgeon is recruiting the AAU circuit well. I only hope he can coach as well as it turned out Gary Williams did back in the day.

Under Armour is the brand a lot of young guys want to be associated with. That will serve the Terps well.

For all the selling of the Terp football soul to improve recruiting, they are still ranked dead last in the "Big 10" in football recruiting. Since they fired Fridge and hired Edsall, I've lost pretty much all interest in MD football. I gave Edsall a year, and he erased any lingering enjoyment I had left - this after being a fan for over 30 years. Enjoy... when they lose by 50 points a game to Big 10 schools.

Agree with Ruz, Terps football has been DOA since Edsall was hired. Even Under Armour can't save an ongoing train wreck of a program.

I do think Edsall came off as a huge jerk year one. I think Maryland did Fridge wrong, firing him after a 9-4 year and a bowl victory. The AD REALLY SCREWED UP letting James Franklin go to Vanderbilt. Fridge had already named him his successor. All Franklin did was make Vandy good in the SEC, already. Best they've ever been.

Ruz, I'm just a Maryland fan. I don't want them to lose just because of their administration and AD and the way they did Ralph Freidgen. It was disgraceful.

Very similar BS went on here in Hawaii since June Jones left, after losing to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, with ex-Redskin QB Colt Brennan. He was a good coach who basically got run out of town for wanting his assistants to get more $.
