Yes they can as long as the receiving team is under the cap enough. Remember we did that with Zbo and I think Camby too.

That is how teams end up with huge trade exceptions but by doing what he mentioned, I dont think it will be enough cap for DHoward.

Re: Dwight for Blake and Eric Rumor
^My bad adiedanny, i just said no without reading to discourage more Blake trade scenarios lol. But yeah, as you said, trading a player to a team with cap space for cash, draft picks, and/or future considerations is possible. This would yield a TPE depending on the outgoing player's salary (TPE is useless for signing players outright but good for S&Ts)
In their scenario though, the 58.5 million cap room requires us to have room for both CP3 (max 21.4/ year for 5yrs) and D12 (20.5 mil/yr for 4 yrs). With the amount of salaries coming in vs going out we won't be able to sign both of them outright unless they take pay cuts (unlikely).

Re: Dwight for Blake and Eric Rumor
In light of the news that Boston will accept a deal without Bledsoe if the can unload Terry & Lee, I came up with what I think is a good trade for all teams involved.
Bos: Jordan, Butler, Duhon, 1st from Clips
LAC: D12, KG, Terry, Doc Rivers
LAL: Love, Bledsoe, Lee, Derrick Williams, 1st from Minne
Min: Griffin, MWP
Doc for 1st is a separate deal I'm just putting all of the pieces on the teams.
Boston get Jordan & a 1st like they want, & get to swap Terry & Lee for expiring deals.
Clips get to pair CP3 with Dwight, get the coach they want, get KG, AND probably get Pierce when he's bought out.
Minne does is because Blake is an actual star that will sell tickets & make their team fun to watch. Not to mention he's locked in for 4 years & Love will bolt in '15.
We do it because if Dwight doesn't want to be here, we don't want him. But we'd rather have the cap space than players we don't want. Love is 1 of the guys we'd use that cap space on, so getting him now is a no brainer. Most Lakers fans think Bledsoe is all hype but I'm excited to see what he can do for our defense. Dwill2 is a good role player that still has upside. Taking on Lee will make it difficult to sign a max FA anytime soon, but getting the 1st balances that out to me.
I know you guys are resistant to dealing Griffin but I'm pretty sure even the biggest Griffin homers will take this, as it's basically gift wrapping a ring for you next season.

Re: Dwight for Blake and Eric Rumor
Alright, let's say it once again:
WE ARE NOT TRADING BLAKE GRIFFIN
There is no possible way you guys are getting anything close to that value from anyone in the league in a Dwight Howard S&T, and DTS is never, ever gonna trade his cash cow. Not for Howard, not for anyone else with better on court production, even if it could potentially get us closer to a championship. That was an obvious BS report that got you Lakers fans' hopes up, but you aren't getting anything close to that return for Howard. Actually I don't really think Howard is gonna want to leave the Lakers so it's probably a moot conversation.

Re: Dwight for Blake and Eric Rumor
i don't get why we'd make this deal anyway.
lo, this would be dwight agreeing in principle to sign with us.
how the lakers get a windfall from it is beyond me.
S&Ts are so the team can get some compensation for the player they're losing. Not so they can help start their franchise over with 2 young fresh studs

Re: Dwight for Blake and Eric Rumor
As a Lakers fan, if we're not getting Griffin I don't see any reason why we should entertain a sign a trade scenario with the Clippers. It just doesn't make sense for us to pay the tax on players like DeAndre Jordan and to put our 2014 cap space in jeopardy for anything less than a star like Griffin.
It also makes no sense to us to help facilitate a deal that puts Paul, Griffin and Howard together on the Clippers who play in the same building as us. We're better off letting him walk for nothing to someone else.
If you want Howard, in my opinion you'll probably have to deal Griffin either to us or to another team to free up cap space. If that's off the table, I guess you can offer Dwight the MLE.

That's cause there is none. Only reason anyone is even talking about this is because Broussard decided to take some rumor he'd heard about Paul and Howard considering teaming up as a distant option into a tabloid-esque story about them conspirating to play together. Ther is no way Howard is gonna be a clipper next year, the same as there's no way Griffin is gonna be a Laker next year.
And this actually doesn't concern me, and I think it won't come to that cause Howard is staying, but if you think your FO won't cave in a S&T if Howard is decided to leave, you're in for a rude awakening. Your GM will be taking Houston's or Dallas' useless trash before he let's him go for nothing. Fu**s sake, even Dan Gilbert sat down with Riley to negotiate a S&T for Lebron, no one in this league is letting assets go just for pride, no matter how small those assets are.

Re: Dwight for Blake and Eric Rumor
Thing I'm saying though is that taking back players on multi year deals could actually be of negative value for us unless the player is good enough to be worth spending next summers cap space on. Griffin is a player like that, but the other players you can offer us really aren't considering we have to compete against you afterwards. If we weren't in position to make a big splash in free agency next summer, I'd agree that the possibility of a sign and trade would be higher since we would have less flexibility and more incentives to make a deal even if it wasn't a great deal. Having said that, I still think a deal between both LA teams would be very unlikely.
Miami traded a trade exception and a few late picks for LeBron, but they were in a completely different position since Miami could sign him without a trade. The Clippers can't sign Dwight outright without unloading Griffin, and I completely agree with you that because of this, Dwight will most likely not be a Clipper next season. It's just bad business for the Lakers to trade him to the Clippers without getting Griffin.
Now, the Rockets aren't dependent on the Lakers to get Dwight so they are in a better position to get a weak sign and trade done.

I think Griffin is a very good player personally.
I'd rather have Dwight sign an extension though.

Re: Dwight for Blake and Eric Rumor
For all you Lakers fans that are insisting on a trade of Blake, DJ and Bledsoe just to let you know that is over 30 mil in salaries. You really think we would sign Howard for 30 mil? Also please do yourself a favor and realize Blake is not getting traded to The Lakers for Howard. Our FO wouldn't trades Bledsoe or 2 first round picks for the Celtics deal. What makes you think they will fold over in negotiating with The Lakers? Our FO will go in and offer the same they offered to Boston plus Caron to make salaries work. If you dont take it no biggie we will work out another deal. You guys are better off getting something rather than nothing.

Ok.. For all the of "we're not trading Griffin at all" fans, this post isn't for you. For those of you that want to pair up CP3 for Dwight & understand you don't get Dwight without giving up a star player, keep reading because I think I found something that solves all of our needs.
Bos: Griffin, Butler, Blake
LAC: Dwight, Bradley, Bass
LAL: Bledsoe, KG, Jordan, Lee
2nd deal, Boston sends Doc to Clips for two 1st.
You get D12 with CP3, you get a good young guard to replace Bledsoe, you get the coach you want. You get a solid big that Dwight has played with in the past. What do you think?

I would do that trade without thinking twice. Clippers pair Paul with Dwight AND get Bradley? Not to mention the fact that they'd also have cap space to sign another big name.
Don't know why you'd want this as a laker fan though....Bledsoe is gonna be real good but I wouldn't trade Dwight for him and some bad contracts.

Well.. I'm sure we won't entertain a S&T for Dwight unless he comes to us & says that he'll leave for Houston if we don't trade him. It doesn't land us a superstar to replace Dwight, but we get KG who I think would be a great compliment to Pau & help form a defensive identity for the entire team like he did with Boston. Also expires in 2 years giving us cap room both next offseason & in 15 if we want to go that route. Bledsoe is a freak athlete & a great defender, which means while he isn't a star, he's good at all of the things we need to improve on, so I think he works out great for us. I think there are atleast a handful of teams that will be interested in Jordan, so hopefully we're able to unload him for a young cheap starting SF.
Nash/Bledsoe
24/Lee
(SF received in Jordan trade)/FA/MWP
Pau/Clark
KG/Hill
Lot of old guys, but also a good young backup that can step in for them at almost every position. A lot riding on who we get for Jordan & how well Kobe plays when he returns.. I'm expecting him to adjust to it like he has every other major injury in his career, & be a top 10 player again next season. So if we get a good starting SF for Jordan, I think we'll be a better team than we were last season. Or who knows, maybe Pierce decides to chase a ring with KG instead of Doc. KG is a much better fit with Pau, Kobe, & Nash than D12 is. He'll set those hard screens that Nash was complaining about Dwight slipping last year. He'll hit his jumpers to keep the floor spaced. He'll make the right pass & not complain about post touches.
I don't WANT the deal or any like it to happen.. But if we absolutely can't keep Dwight, I think the team above gives us a great chance at winning a ring next season while maintaining flexibility to bring in stars in the future.
