Dictionary.com - Bandwagon

Post#1 » by SacTownKings4Life » Tue Jun 18, 2013 11:43 pm

Bandwagon

Noun

1. A wagon, usually large and ornately decorated, for carrying a musical band while it is playing, as in a circus parade or to a political rally.
2. A party, cause, movement, etc., that by its mass appeal or strength readily attracts many followers.

A bandwagonER is someone who follows a particularly popular party, cause, or movement. The Miami Heat would qualify as a popular "party" so to speak, and many casual fans follow them, in addition to their initial fanbase.

Likewise, HATING the Miami Heat is currently a popular "movement" among the rest of the non-Miami NBA fanbase. A movement which has, by mass appeal, attracted a fairly large amount of followers.

So yes, the term "bandwagoning" is NOT exclusive to simply "liking" one thing or another without loyalty and does not exclude "not liking" one thing or another. Bandwagoning is following along with a particularly popular party, cause or movement, which can include EITHER liking or disliking another party, cause or movement. Meaning that fans can be bandwagoners AND haters can also be bandwagoners. Followers in admiration and followers in hate.

Most Laker and heat fans.

You know what's funny and sad at the same time, all these little kids who love the Miami Heat will be gone when (IF) they split up. On to the next one. Maybe they'll just follow Lebron to his new team.

I don't remember as many Miami fans a couple of years ago when they were garbage. When a team or someone has success you always got rats crawling out of the woodworks.

Would it make you feel better if I was a hated Heat fan posting this?

Apparently reading comprehension is a bigger problem in this country than we realize. The point of this was to expose, once again, how hypocritical it is to call other people out as bandwagon followers when they themselves are guilty of following one themselves.

There are people who have claimed I have "changed" the definition to suit my own agenda. Well he's the dictionary. You can look it up for yourself if you don't believe me.

Flawed. The NBA is popular so everyone is part of some bandwagon. Its the reasoning behind why you follow a team is the real telling factor.

This is true of ALL star studded championship teams. In what way does this situation differ from the others? How many Bulls fans are there now in comparison to 1991-1998? And how many people "followed" Jordan to the Wizards? (and do I need to put a disclaimer that this is NOT a question of player comparison?)

I guess I better go tell the dudes at work that they are not really bandwagoners as they like to call themselves. What should I tell them they are? I know they aren't Warrior fans anymore unless of course Lebron promises to join the Dubs in 2014. Eagerly waiting on your reply.

Thanks!

Inb4 the lock, not thread worthy AT ALL.

The term most people use is 'bandwagon fans' which you are not a 'fan' of something you hate, so therefore you are wrong.

Can't I hate the heat just because I hate the heat?

That's like calling someone a bandwagoner when they say I think Natalie portman is hot or I think Susan Boyle is unattractive. It's just something I believe

The reasoning why you like or dislike any team can be any specific reason. But if you CAN'T come up with any original reason why you dislike a given team other than the EXACT same reason that everybody else dislikes that team, you're just following the wagon. There's exactly two reasons why MOST people dislike Miami. 1) Decision. 2) Superteam. If you can't provide a more detailed reason why you don't like them and wish for their downfall, you apparently have no other legitimate reason. Like, tell me something I haven't already heard, otherwise it is a bandwagon opinion.

For instance, I could break down to you WHY I have Lebron in my avatar even though I'm a Kings fan, or I could break down a number of reasons why I dislike a team like the Lakers and have it be from my own opinion, not just agreeing with popular opinion.

Ok, wait, come on. Just because it's the popular opinion doesn't mean you can't legitimately share the same sentiment.

I'm glad you asked that question. So why can't the next person like who they like just because they like who they like? Why need you refer to THEM as bandwagoners just because they "happen" to like somebody that you don't?

Go ahead... but remember, if I've heard of that reason before, its not a legitimate reason and doesn't count.
