Does Toronto News Papers do investigative reporting?

Post#1 » by dj-Sequence » Wed Jun 19, 2013 11:37 pm

What I have been noticing for some time is sites like
Yahoo.com breaking stories about the Raptors before our own Toronto reporters located a stones throw away from The AdLibors office.

What I started think about all the stories of big trades
Or signings that has transpired from the inception or our team.
I can't recall any story that has been broken by Toronto's own.

I find it quite funny that our reporters are just surfing tweets for stories. Or just spend their time surfing through RGM for thoughts on stories and or trade rumours. (Adlibing our great poster's on this site.)
My question is...
Is scanning twitter investigative reporting? If so which of Toronto's media is the best it?

Second.
If not which sites are the best at breaking basketball stories?
It does not have to be a Toronto media outlet..

Toronto Papers (with the exception of the globe) are having trouble keeping the lights on.

Are you talking a bout the same paper, whose writers come on to RGM actually use posts in their article and call it theirs?
The same paper who breaks a story with no proof and say believe me?
I understand the stats show people are reading The Star.
What about quality?
Is Le Doug that good?

Woj from Yahoo breaks a lot of our stories!

Circulation is the wrong place to look. The Star, like every newspaper, is struggling:

I was talking circulation because the other poster was saying every newspaper in Toronto, but the Globe is failing. I pointed out that the Globe doesn't have the highest circulation. My comment had absolutely nothing to do with the Raptors. Btw the Star also has the largest sports departments out of all of the Toronto papers, they just have no interest in the Raptors anymore since they moved Feschuk to hockey, Doug Smith doesn't even cover them either according to him. They have a bunch of puckheads that write the occasional column about them. Whether or not their writers come on here is neither here nor there and frankly an RGM speculative phenomenon. Woj breaks everyone's stories not just the Raptors. He embarrasses ever cities' beat writers with his scoops.

Ok, so find me numbers that suggest the Star is failing and the Globe has better numbers and maybe I'll ignore the fact that all of these papers give free newspapers. In fact just the other day I was contacted by the Globe for this very reason. The free newspapers should cancel each other out. No source disagrees with what I have stated. It is almost universally accepted that the Toronto Star has the largest readership.

That's fine I wasn't really arguing that medium is not struggling. I understand print media is dying with the advent of the Internet, but was arguing that it is still the largest paper out of all the papers. The poster was implying that the papers were all struggling with the exception of the Globe.

Be careful, do not make fun of the Toronto Star or they will make up stories about you and destroy your life

I think what happens is teams rarely leak. Agents do. When agents leak, they leak to the same people to keep favour, and the writer tends to treat them well. Also the Agents who leak want to get it out, so they go to the
"hottest" writer. Look at Woj's pieces in the lockout and it's not hard to guess where he get his info.

Star replaced Feschuk with Cathal Kelly.

As for the OP, there's just no need for it. It would be great for us of course, but regular readers don't care. And stories break on Twitter anyway.

Funny about the Star though, they spend extra to have people follow around the mayor. They had two guys drive around neighborhoods to figure out which house it was the mayor posed with a couple of young, colored kids.

They can afford that while le Doug writes his morning blog from his phone every morning while on the can.

I'm old enough to remember when the Globe was a great paper. Never liked the Star ... I always found it self-important and vacuous.

When it comes to the Raptors, most of the Toronto media's sources are in the Raptors, which makes them fairly tight-lipped. Big US media tend to have sources all over the place, so when agents or other teams leak, they are better positioned to hear things.

But let's face it, in Toronto, media buys go first to hockey, then to hockey, and then to hockey. As long as advertising revenue is in hockey (or, in summer, baseball), the papers are not going to put a lot of resources into basketball.

In the age of Twitter, scoops matter less than ever. Much more important is insightful analysis. And when it comes to insightful analysis, Toronto's basketball reporters are ... well, just as bad as they are at scoops. No signs of a Torontonian Zach Lowe coming along any time soon.
