2013 NBA Draft Discussion: Picks #23 and #53

Post#1 » by Jake0890 » Sat Jun 22, 2013 1:48 am

We've been scattering our thoughts of who we want and who we think the Pacers will draft in multiple different threads all over this board, so I figured it was time to make a thread to condense all of that stuff since the draft is right around the corner.

Thursday, the 27th, the 2013 NBA Draft starts and the Pacers own the #23 and #53 pick. Here's a rundown of who we have worked out:

Previous Workouts
Trevor Mbakwe, Minnesota
Christian Watford, Indiana
Romero Osby, Oklahoma
Kenny Kadji, Miami
Glen Rice Jr, D-League
Rotnei Clark, Butler
Augusto Lima, International
Durand Scott, Miami
Tim Hardaway Jr., Michigan
Deshaun Thomas, Ohio State
Amath M'Baye, Oklahoma
Troy Daniels, VCU
Tony Mitchell, North Texas
Andrew Smith, Butler
Solomon Hill, Arizona
Axel Toupane, France
Chris Babb, Iowa State
James Southerland, Syracuse
Alex Oriakhi, Mizzou
Will Clyburn, Iowa State

Upcoming Workouts
Zeke Marshall, Akron
Angelo Sharpless, Elizabeth City State
Nick Minnerath, Detroit

Now, onto the projections on mock drafts. Here's a list I compiled of projections from multiple draft sites.
Pick #23
- Rudy Gobert, C, France (Draftexpress)
- Ricky Ledo, SG, Providence (CBSSports - Matt Moore)
- Rudy Gobert, C, France (CBSSports - Gary Parrish)
- Reggie Bullock, SG/SF, North Carolina (Walterfootball)
- Tony Mitchell, PF, North Texas (SportsIllustrated)
- Jamaal Franklin, SG, San Diego State (SBNation)
- Tony Mitchell, PF, North Texas (HoopsWorld)
- Shane Larkin, SG, Miami (HoopsWorld)
- Lorenzo Brown, PG, NC State (HoopsWorld)
- Rudy Gobert, C, France (NBADraft.net)
Most Predicted: Rudy Gobert, C, France

Pick #53
- Peyton Siva, PG, Louisville
- BJ Young, SG, Arkansas (CBSSports - Matt Moore)
- Peyton Siva, PG, Louisville (CBSSports - Gary Parrish)
- Phil Pressey, PG, Mizzou (Walterfootball)
- Ray McCallum, PG, Detroit (NBADraft.net)
Most Predicted: Peyton Siva, PG, Louisville

So given all of the workouts and all of the predictions, who do you want, and who do you think the Pacers will draft? Trade back? Trade up? Let's hear it!

I think there are unreported workouts. I've seen stories where other players say they have worked out for us. I think we'll both try to trade up and to buy into high second as I expect point guards to go well above and below 23.

Out of curiosity, who have you seen having unreported workouts?

Great idea to make a single thread for all pre-draft conversations.

Gobert could be great value at the 23rd pick. Might allow us to move Mahinmi after next season. Wouldn't be surprised to see Kadji. He could come in and fill Tyler's role possibly. I'd love Larkin. Wouldn't mind buying a 2nd and taking a flyer on Goodwin or Kabongo.

What I have seen are interviews with players who when asked list the cities they've visited name us even though their names are not on pacers.com. If you look at the Pacers workout press releases, you'll see they say things like "the fifth workout open to the media" which to me confirms the notion that there have been workouts that weren't open to the media. I think Larkin may have been one but I really don't remember all the names. I'm not going to take the time to look for them, but if I see any I'll come back and edit this message.

Jamaal Franklin, among others, was inside the house today.

Players scheduled to workout for the Pacers on Saturday are Matt Dellavedova (St. Mary's), Angelo Sharpless (Elizabeth City State), Jamaal Franklin (San Diego State), Zeke Marshall (Akron), and Jeff Withey (Kansas). The list of players is subject to change.

I really am liking Franklin but i don't think he'll be there for our pick.

I think I prefer Bullock to Franklin but I still prefer Erick Green to both although he might be a bit of a reach.

There is always the question of how much you play the draft game. if Dwight Freeney is the player you want but all the mock drafts have him going much lower, do you just take him anyway, or do you trade down and hope he'll still be there when you pick next, or take a higher rated player and hope you can trade up to get another pick while your target is still on the board? Colts took were criticized for taking Freeney too high. Colts traded down in first round and still got Reggie Wayne. Last year the Pacers took Plumlee who would have gone off the board soon had they passed and then bought back into the second round to get OJ.

I think Franklin is more like a late lotto guy, and I don't think he'll be there when we pick.

I have Hardaway Jr over Rice Jr but otherwise I'm with Jake on his list for 23. I like Green and Canaan a lot but would try to get a pick at the top of the second with them as my targets and with that in my pocket I'd use my 1st on Mitchell or someone who fell because Mitchell went higher. I don't expect Larkin or Schroeder to fall to us but I'd jump on them if they did. I wouldn't trade up for them because I don't have them rated that much higher than Green and Canaan, but I wouldn't be mad if we did it based upon our coaches evaluations.

when Pritchard was in Portland, he was constantly moving up and down in the draft getting and swapping picks. will this be the year when we take that approach?

Unless Gerald Green is being traded, I don't see us moving anywhere.

Wings :
Jamal Franklin, good chance he becomes a starting caliber two way player. Nice get if in 2014 both Granger and Lance are gone.
Lesser guys in my opinion, Tim Hardaway, Reggie Bullock, Sergay Karasev. A wing with this pick makes so much sense for I'll call these guys 1B

Point guard:
I'd love to see us draft a guy who one day could be better than George Hill.
Nate Wolters, gym rat who was a big time scorer in college while being an excellent assist guy. Question about his ability to defend but Larkin and Cannan raise the same questions for me.
Eric Green, another big time scorer, but not the same assist guy as Wolters
It appears Wolters and maybe Green could be had in the early second round and it's generally not that hard to buy something here.

Big:
Gorgi Dieng, great size and a feel for the game to boot. Rare athlete for his size. Hate to see us spend more capital on a guy who's best position is center but, too much promise to pass on.

My guys would be Erick Green, Reggie Bullock and Glen Rice Jr in that order.

I think with Granger coming back if you put Lance back on the bench and pair him with Erick Green you're going to create points on fast breaks like crazy. Not to mention Green is the kind of guy we need coming off the bench with the ability to create some shots while he is learning how to play NBA defense.

I'm hoping for Erick Green at #23. I didn't see him play much at Virginia Tech, but from what I've read of him and seen others write, he sounds just about ideal for the Pacers. I hope he is still on the board when we pick.

If he's gone, I think I'd like Canaan next, or Lorenzo Brown from North Carolina State, or Dieng from Louisville if he's still available (although I doubt he will be). But I'll be disappointed if Green is already gone.

I don't really care who the Pacers take at #53, the odds of it being anyone who will stick in the NBA are too small.

I mean, we did just draft Lance Stephenson and Orlando Johnson in the 2nd round, so its definitely not useless.

Indycornrows.com reports that Canaan is getting a second workout tomorrow and calls him the odds on favorite to go 23.

The one problem I have with Canaan is simply his size. He's 6'1" and I think won't be able to guard some point guards in the league, especially the top tier guys.
