Ray opt out and take more money? I wouldn't be surprised, we owe him a bit for "The Shot" lol.

They just replaced Micky Arison as CEO of Carnival. He is still chairman of the board.

Makes perfect sense. A first round pick last season would not have played at all and it would have cost us a 4 year commitment in salary plus luxury tax. Riley knew that 2014 was the year to stretch the core. Why if a decent name becomes available in 2014 and we can't make it happen because of the salary of our 12-15 man?
Flexibility.
We are way past the luxury tax line, there is no flexibility with a pick or not.
I disagree. The Big 3 can opt out in 2014. What if you have to rebuild? Having a 1st rounder - who is not even part of the rotation - on your books taking up cap room makes no sense. What player that we could have taken in last year's draft at the spot we had would be in our rotation this season or next?
The truth is we do not know what is going to happen in 2014, keeping that flexibility is key.

thats what i think winds up happening. Ray opts out and resigns with us for more money and more years. Totally deserves it too. Rays skill set doesnt rely mostly on athleticism so i think he can play at this level a few more years.

"I have been discussing this with the board for some time now and feel the timing is right to align our company with corporate governance best practices and turn over the reins after 34 years as CEO," said Arison, in a statement. "Arnold is an exceptional professional with extensive experience in organizational leadership who will bring a fresh perspective to the company."

Relax, he's still chairman of the board which is still the most powerful person there. He's just not going to go through the day to day operations of the company anymore.

Re: Official Off-Season Trade/Rumor Thread
Amnestying Joel is like bunny hunting with a cannon. You use the amnesty option to unload a player whose salary is keeping a franchise from acquiring talent to improve long term, not to save a comparatively small amount of Luxury Tax on a player you can move otherwise in the near future. It's primarily a tool to create cap space.
If I'm Arison and I'm looking at Wade's $60M and gimpy knees, I save that option and look at the tax on Joel as insurance. The Knicks probably regret using it on Billups and they got Tyson Chandler as a result. Now they're pretty much hosed with Amar'e for years.
The smart thing to do would be to wait until after next season when the Big 3 possibly opt out and you only have UD, Joel and Miller as the only contracts eligible for amnesty. Assuming none of them are moved somehow next season.
Wade, James and Bosh would be essentially expiring contracts if they opt out. If Wade or Bosh suffer a devastating injury and, quite rationally, decide to not opt out to collect the remaining $40M on their contracts while they rehab at least the option is there to pay them off without giving 3 times their salary to the NBA,

Won't lie if we get rid of Joel... (Which we should) I will surely miss the old king aka the warden.

Re: Official Off-Season Trade/Rumor Thread
Well the get rid of Joel bandwagon is in full steam on here at the moment.
I think you'll find that he's well Worth the money he's on. Perhaps check out the salaries of some other Centers before you mock his small salary.
He does the job required of him without complaining. I guess that's why he has the rings.

I thought Miami should rather sign the Birdman than Lopez. WE already see the result with the Birdman. If there's a move the Heat should make this off-season, is to clear salaries.
Birdman only can play 15-20 mins a game tops. We have feces at center after Birdman. We ideally should sign Dalembert, make a trade for Lopez, and resign Birdman. Center is the most important position by far.

Re: Official Off-Season Trade/Rumor Thread
I am happy with getting Birdman at full energy for 15-20mpg. IMO, if we can find another Center or PF who can rebound, defend and is not allergic to the ball on offense to play another 15-20mpg, we are golden. If only we could find a 6'10 + Udonis Haslem-type....

Suprised people still want Dalembert. He was hot garbage in Milwaukee, and he only cares about the money. He would be like Dampier all over again IMO. We need to find a guy in the D-league that can bang and can backup Birdman.

Re: Official Off-Season Trade/Rumor Thread
For what it's worth, my dad's good friend is a season ticket holder. He knows some people who are close to the Heat, and he has told me today that Riley was seen dining at Prime 112 with Greg Oden pretty much all of last week. He thinks and hopes that we are going to sign him.
Take it as you will.

I think a full offseason with us should get him in better shape to play more minutes. If we can bring Oden on early and put him through a whole summer of workouts and he turns out to be a solid 10-15 minute backup, we'll be good to go on that end. He's that one dimension we lack, a traditional 7-footer. Other than that, I don't see any pressing needs for this team.
