I am actually starting to wonder about a line up of
Rondo
Wallace
Green
Smth
and the young bigs.

Not a great shooting team but they could be a nightmare to match up with.

What would you imagine we would have to give up in order to get Smith?

I don't understand why people keep saying those picks are worthless. The first pick (2014) is obviously worthless. But the 2016 and 2018 picks are worth A LOT.

KG, Pierce, and Terry will be retired by then. Joe Johnson would be a 35-yr old on a $25M contract. Deron Williams will be 32 years old. Trust me, the 2016 and 2018 picks are going to be very high lottery picks. And best of all, they are UNPROTECTED.

Not to mention the Nets can't trade any future picks until the 2020 one and have pretty much no assets and are over the apron for the next two years, so for the next two years, they probably won't even be able to perform any major trades or sign anyone outside the low mid level exception. Even without Wallace, they're basically in cap hell for years because they will have $60M tied up just in Deron, Williams, and Lopez all the way through to 2016. That offseason, Deron Williams will be 32, Joe Johnson will be 34, and Brook Lopez becomes an unrestricted free agent, so any number of terrible things could happen to make the Nets awful by 2018, and they can't replenish with a good draft pick in 2016 or 2017 or 2018 because we will have access to those picks. This is basically it for them: they have a couple years of being on top of the world with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, and they have no good way of replacing those two when they retire.

Bottom line is, it's possible that those picks will all be in the late 20's, but there's really no reason to believe that they will be. After this trade, the Nets are basically built as the ultimate win now team.

Sure, it would just have to be in 1 player for 1 player deal. If it's in a package deal, I think we have to wait 60 days or something like that.

I hate to break the news to the folks who never want to win a game next year, but Rondo/AB/Green/Sully are going to wins some games. Having those players on the roster means we will not be one of the worst teams in the league.

ACL/shoulder issues/hopefully ok now/back issues. Done. 20-62, not the worst in the league, but let the balls fall where they may.

There are just a bunch of teams that have nothing, not sure people have looked around the league at some of these rosters

I hear you on that, and have read the threads on it. Maybe I was too glib because it's true we'd need some injury 'help' to truly tank. But - you have to admit we've got a leg up in that department with the conditions I listed for the four players you mention (I left out the heart condition on purpose because knock on wood that's all in the past). Honestly I wouldn't count on AB and especially Sully to stay healthy yet. And Rondo can come back whenever we want - January? February? Injured tanking is the best tanking..

Humphries (expiring contract) and a first rounder seem like the obvious choice. Or possibly Bradley, seeing as sully doesn't have him in his starting lineup.

EDIT: Looks as if we can't package a player with Humphries, but Humphries by himself with a pick should be OK, I think.

Things will probably fall apart for the nets. By the time 2018 rolls around that might be the best pick in the draft. So you can't really argue with the value of this trade. But it sure looks like a full tank job to me.

Reports have been flying for years now on Smith. That both Ainge likes him and Rondo wants him.

Humphries and a draft pick. There is not a long line of teams that are going to want to pay Josh Smith 15 mil a year if we are that team and ATL wants to get something for him there you go.

Though I wonder if going after Bynum makes more sense.

If I'm proven wrong I'll certainly own up to it. But I'd wager we're targeting the 2014 lottery more than Smith or Millsap or anyone else at this point.

I suspect the Celtics are targeting a top 1-4 pick but realize it may be 1-5 if another team is willing to tank as hard.

They don't need to decide right now between Wiggins/Parker and anyone else. That can wait until after the season is over. They just have to know a top 5 pick in what is expected to be a strong draft will have great value even if the Celtics don't get lucky.

Philly is a team that could potentially tank next year so we will see how that goes.

That sucks. Wallace and our pick could possibly land us a great player if we wanted to trade

Bird would have won 4 rings with that team, in this weak ass era of basketball.

Maybe when he tried to trade PP for him at the deadline?

Keep an eye on Charlotte as a possible landing spot for Kris Humphries. Rival execs skeptical he stays in Boston.
My name's Henry Connor.
Conner Henry was a Celtic.

Why wouldn't Atl just let Smith walk and go after Bynum themselves? For a late first round pick? I'm not sure. I could see it when it was a TPE and Picks... but Hump? Not so sure...

I like it. What Danny has done has built us for a potentially great future. More than ever before. Pick up a top player in the next draft, bank on Brooklyn sucking in 2018, and we will potentially get another top player on a hopefully good team by then (Len Bias style). Lots of ifs but I like the thought process. Honestly based on some history I've read, it actually 'feels' like a Red move.
