A few Random Thoughts on Draft Night

Post#1 » by theatlfan » Fri Jun 28, 2013 6:05 am

Haven't been around recently - been slammed at work and at home. But nothing brings one back like D-Day...

Looks like the rumor of BOS making a serious run at Smith in FA is about to come to fruition. By trading Pierce and Garnett for picks and pieces, BOS clears out the old to usher in a new era around Rondo. The rumor mill has Rondo wanting to play with Smith who are good friends. To do this, you'd think one obvious component going forward would be to get a perimeter oriented big so that the paint is cleared out. On cue, BOS trades up to ensure they land that player in Olynyk. Now armed with 3 extra 1sts and a couple of large unwanted contracts in Wallace and Humphries that should at least be in the ballpark of Smith's expected starting salary, BOS can put several interesting scenarios on the table here. If they're offering 2 '14 1sts, would we bite on eating Wallace's contract? I think I'd demand a 3rd 1st - probably BRK's in '16.

For our FA plans, it does appear that Ferry is serious about the CP3/Howard run. We had several international prospects lined up to draft in the 1st so that we could ensure that we could clear up enough room so that dumping L Williams would be enough to offer both their max. When the guy we promised in the 1st was selected before us and we (may have) panicked and looked to trade up, we still didn't alter this course even though we ate Cunningham's contract. I do wonder if our pick would have been different if we didn't take on Cunningham though...

Last, it was GD good to see a GM in his 1st "real" draft with us hit those positions with 1sts immediately. The biggest thing that peeved me about BK was his stubborn insistence that the PG and C positions would be found last. Sure, these guys may be nothing more than the "they had to get something" guy in a deal down the road and no, it's not the only way to build, but d@mn if it doesn't feel good to know that our GM doesn't see these positions as 2nd class citizens on the court or as pieces that we'll land if it's convenient. We at least have to feel some optimism for the off-season in knowing that we have attempted to patch holes in the 2 most important positions on the court. I've felt this about Ferry before, but every time it gets confirmed I have to praise it: we've got a GM who seems to understand what he's attempting to do and has the experience to know it'll work with some good decisions and a little luck. BK had a plan, but I was never sure if he truly understood it and I know that he couldn't have had the experience to know it'd work (because, quite simply, the plan was terrible).

The trade indicates the complete opposite of what you just said. Boston is now looking to trade Rondo and going full tank.

Agree... i called this a year ago. Its cool to finally have a GM that makes the same moves i would make if i was in that position.

It had been reported that if Boston could find somewhere to trade Pierce then they had an offer ready for Smith. By trading Pierce and KG it doesn't mean they are going to tank. Now if they ship Rondo out, then tank away.

As for trading Smith, remember if we are making a serious push for both Dwight and CP3, then Josh will be renounced. I am guessing a Smith trade is likely backup plan B.

Yeah, i think plan A will be convincing both Paul and Howard

plan B will be if Paul goes back to the Clippers and Ferry uses Josh, offers a big contract to Josh on the stipulation that Dwight is coming too

plan C will be just to sign some second tier free agents

and plan D will be to tank

Dan Patrick this am stated D12 isn't coming to ATL...its Houston.

Like DF, I wouldn't give up on CP3 until he tells me no thanks. What could DF do to convince these 2 to play together? Well, DF earns his money for selling this concept.

BOS did their job getting flexible. Now it's on to working on who they want to come in.

I don't think DF ups his ante for Josh at all no matter the circumstance, so Josh is going to get a better deal out there as will JT.

The Danny Ferry All Draft Team thus far:

C-Lucas Nogueira
PF-Mike Muscala
SF-Mike Scott
SG-John Jenkins
PG-Denny Schroeder

Time will tell how all this works out.

So bummed we missed out on Jamaal Franklin in the 2nd round....

You are probably right about D12, but you never know what the visits will do to change his mind. And we know how Dwight likes to change his mind!

CP3 is technically still in play, but a chance to play for Doc is probably just too good to pass up.

So, Josh to BOS looks very likely the best option. We can keep our flexibility, pick up a pick or two, and player(s) to get us up to cap requirement. I'd really like to try and nab Courtney Lee from them.

Like trading Horford and re-signing Josh Smith?
