Zeller wasn't my top choice, but whatever. I think he'll be a good not great player. Definitely twice as good as his bro. I just have this feeling that BM is going to be a great player. I think what turned a lot of people off about him is his performance against Syracuse, not that anyone on IU played great but those bigs really gave Cody some issues down low. Granted they play zone so they really clog the paint and the game in the NBA is far more open.

Cody brings skills to the table that we are in need of and what team doesn't want a big that has some athleticism and hustles down the floor, so I am not expecting him to make us leaps and bounds better, but I do think he can help us be a better team.

With that shooting form combined with his short arms I wonder if Zeller is going to be able to make contested jump shots.

His standing height will help. I'm assuming most players guarding him will be 6'8" - 6'10"

Hopefully this means, Biyombo will be benched, and the Bobcats can sign someone like JJ Hickson to play PF.

I think it is more likely this.

Kemba/Sessions/FA
Henderson/Gordon/FA
MKG/FA/Taylor
McRoberts/Zeller
Biyombo/Haywood

Could be changed if we chose to go after a FA.

Kevin Pelton ranks the picks usinig WARP.While Cody Zeller had the 5th highest WARP of top prospects, Pelton ranks CHA's choice 12th:

12. Charlotte Bobcats, +0.3 (Expected: 2.3, actual 2.5)
As surprising as Cody Zeller may have been at No. 4 -- especially with Noel still on the board -- by this measure he scores as a positive pick thanks to the fifth-best WARP* projection in the draft.

[*start by translating a player's college statistics to his NBA equivalents. That produces a per-minute rating, player win% (equivalent to PER), that projects how we can expect rookies to perform in the NBA next season. By adding age, come up with a projection of how many Wins Above Replacement Player (WARP) prospects will produce over their first five years -- the amount of time teams control a first-round pick between the four-year rookie contract and one year as a restricted free agent.]

BTW I was also surprised to learn that Zeller, whose face makes him looks like a grandfather, is still only 20. (younger than Mitch McGary!)

The reach (no pun intended) of Cody Zeller was made to compliment Bismack Biyombo in the starting lineup. Even if Charlotte does sign J.J. Hickson, there is no way that him & Zeller could start together. That would make for a lesser interior defensive unit than last year's duo of Biyombo & Byron Mullens

Colin Hoggard ‏@ColinWFNZ 1h

Coach Clifford says Cody's mentality of playing for his teammates is very similar to KG.

I think when it comes down to it you have to play the best guys at the spots at least starting. Zeller can't handle C since he is short reach wise and not physical enough. Zeller has a long way to go before he can handle the physical nature of the NBA and his move to PF due to his size.

Being in Orlando, I do know that Zeller stayed an extra day during his workouts which means the Magic were serious about him enough that they worked him out over two days. That was more than any other player stayed. People here thought the Magic were considering him at #2. I think he may surprise people.

Zeller is currently light years behind McRoberts as a PF. He has a long way to go to become a stretch 4 like we drafted him to be. He needs to improve his handle, court vision, and perimeter defense.

Hard to see a top 5 pick not starting on a bad team, ESP in favor of a career journeyman like Mcroberts.

This is clearly a youth movement. Start him and give him as many minutes as possible.

I guess that will make us worse and help with the tank everyone is cheering for.

So how many more wins will we net by replacing zeller with Mcroberts in the starting lineup?

But somehow someone 6'9" is a better fit at C? I don't see it. Zeller is also better than McRoberts, it's absurd to say he isn't.

Don't know if it will make any difference. We could be bad enough that subbing in a better PF won't help at all or it could be 5 or 6 wins depending on the rest of the squad.

Was Cody Zeller a reach? Maybe, but let's not forget, Zeller was a projected top-three pick last season, before he waded his way through a so-so sophomore season. Stan Van Gundy has told me that new 'Cats coach Steve Clifford is great at developing athletic bigs, citing Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkogulu as examples. He's got the most athletic big in the draft in Zeller.

that article also forgot to mention ryan anderson. he also worked with earl clark last year in LA. clifford obviously is good with stretch 4s.
